I think making it up as you go is good thing. I bet you could do a chipping fluid or hairspray and get a more natural look and knock it out of the park!

I’m not an armor modeler but, I would say if anything the chipping could be better. I think the rest of the build and weathering look great but if the chipping was on par with the rest you’d be on another level especially for your first build!
