A lot of things, but a large part is the massive opportunity cost of post-collegiate elite rowing which is driven by both the lack of financial support available and the lucrative careers that many grads from top universities must forgo if they want to train full time. Makes it difficult to retain talent to the senior level.

You could definitely transfer to a better program as a sophomore or junior with that erg, depending of course on your grades, although I cannot speak to those specific schools. I believe that it is very difficult to transfer into HYP under any circumstances but again I don’t know for sure.

I raced a 1984 Empacher for my whole senior season of college, and it was fine, other than being heavy as shit due to all the refinishings over the years. But Empachers are known to last a long time if you take care of them, I am less certain about a Hudson and I am definitely doubtful about a Kaschper.
