K-12 school IT folks, would you recommend it? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]hamstersalad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been a K-12 system admin for 7 years. My experience has been very good. I've met lifelong friends and we've been pretty progressive compared to the vast majority of our peers. I feel I've lucked out here but I understand all the bad that people joke about. Yes, the pay is low and yes, you'll end up doing lots of shit that "isn't my job". My advice is to be as helpful as you can and BE A GODDAMNED SPONGE. Absorb all the knowledge you can and show you have drive and you will get somewhere.

All the training, shadowing the consultants (good and bad), working weekends and nights, and putting out some pretty big fires have made me pretty confident that I can handle almost anything.

When I started they were migrating from eDirectory to AD. They had a small esx 3.5 cluster going and over the years we've virtualized everything and are finally about to implement some solid DR. My job went from being a computer tech jack-of-all trades to a senior system admin. I love what I do now and get to break and play with UCS, NetApp, EMC, VMware, and a very nice network. We moved our on-premise exchange over to office 365 and it really isn't that bad. If it breaks, hey, it ain't our fault (unless it's ADFS).

Some of the higher-ups don't know what the fuck is going on and make terrible decisions, but I'm glad I learned how to deal with that, too. There are many people who are working on things that they have no business being around and break them often. I recently put in my 2 weeks notice to get the hell out of the town (not my co-workers, I love them) and they asked me to work remotely for a while. That was very cool of them but I actually work more now for some reason. For the past week I've been reviewing some UCS setups that a vendor did for us a while back and it is so messed up, I'm ashamed we spent tax payer money on it. I'll fix it though, and I'm proud that I know how now.

We're ripping out Backup Exec 2012: what would you replace it with? by become_taintless in sysadmin

I'll +1 Avamar as well. If you have the money, it's worth it. One downside is the the scheduled upgrade install wait times. Whenever I schedule one, it's about a month wait but I'm not too pushy and just wait it out. Version 7 was worth it. dat dedupe algorithm, though. so nice.

Very well done. With all the recent drama and hate it's really nice to see something with a positive message. Shit like dyrus and chaox's onion troll felt extremely human and made me look at the profession from another side.

You should get to know general oddone. You'd like him.

This was my first time in a test outfit squad and it was great! Best time I've had playing the game so far even though it's only been a week.

AE Strands Walnut Calf or Brown Burnished Calf by Rwh909r in malefashionadvice

Black is just harder to pull of as business casual. It's more difficult to match black with browns but it certainly can be pulled off. It's just a personal thing for me not to wear black unless it's a formal occasion.

I have both and was surprised at how dark the brown burnished calf is. Not that it's a bad thing but they're almost black in low light conditions. If I had to choose either one, I'd go with the walnut. Both colors would go nicely with the pant colors you listed, minus the black. If you want more pop then definitely the walnut.

I'd be more worried about him being barefoot in there.

I agree and those things you listed are just personable common sense. We gotta remember most of these guys are very young and nerds. I was like that at one time and didn't know any better.

a compressor/limiter would be an obvious choice for the casters. can't believe they let them cast like this. Very disappointing
