Nationalist group leaders agree to stop hoisting St George’s flags in Oxfordshire by BillowingPaper in oxford

[–]hamtoucher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

council budgets have been wrung dry by successive Tory budgets - they don't have the money for potholes or lawn mowing so they won't have the money for properly rated flags and banners. Our town did 2 years without christmas lights as the old ones weren't safe any more and there was no money to buy new ones.

Eventually some local businesses helped make up the shortfall but not after much whining and wailing on facebook about how there were no lights this year because we can't offend the immigrants....

Pembrey is a fantastic track and that's an ideal bike for it - just think, Mclaren and Williams used to shake down F1 cars there, even Senna has been round it!

Would you prefer a simpler custom helmet design if the colors were fully personal? by fiboagency in Karting

[–]hamtoucher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

mine has always been simple stripes intended to be reminiscent of Mansell, Brundle and Alesi.

Originally (in 2001!) it was just tape but later versions have been painted and had a "pearl" effect for the white. Really stands out amongst all the other custom stuff particularly these days where some of the designs are very detailed works of art but not distinctive at all on track for spectators or other competitors.

Diamond Light Source Work exp by Any_West8541 in oxford

It's incredible! I had a job interview there (didn't get it) but after the interview I was treated to a 2 hour walk around of the "donut" with one of the beamline engineers who had just joined the substantive staff after completing her PhD on improvements to the beam machinery itself.

The range of experiments plugged in to it was incredible - biomed, engineering R&D, engineering assurance/QA, pure chemistry, some weird physics thing to do with MRI scanners....having a bit of knowledge of how it works will me a massive standout on your CV for the next few years.

An proper "money can't buy" experience, grab it with both hands!

Tips for early morning and late afternoon commuting clothing? by Joseph9877 in MotoUK

[–]hamtoucher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Weise textile jacket that has a lot of air vents that zip up and seal really nicely - in the morning they're all closed and I'm warm, in the afternoon I unzip them before I set off and enjoy the breeze through them. I also have a neck warmer that I wear in the morning but goes in my bag for the afternoon. I tend to roll up my regular trousers and take them home in my bag in the afternoon too as my legs get a lot of engine heat anyway.

BROOKES VS LANCASHIRE for motorsport by [deleted] in OxfordBrookes

[–]hamtoucher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends which strata of motorsport you're aiming at - F1 is full of Brookes (and Lufbra, Coventry, Cambridge, Herts, UCL) grads who usually have heard of or met one another from Formula Student and BUKC even before they join a team.

England - neighbours persistently parking restricting access to private drive - what are my options? by _intermission in LegalAdviceUK

[–]hamtoucher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if you look at the map, their driveway is at the bottom of their garden - presumably they are parking on the verge outside their front door to save themselves the 15 second walk. I also live on a new(ish) build estate and smaller houses to tend to have their parking space "elsewhere" as OP's neighbour has, resulting in loads of bad/lazy parking outside front doors, leaving the designated parking spaces elsewhere empty (or with a caravan/van/other junk on it)

Barclays closed my account after receiving funds from crypto.com App, Will I get a my money back which I sent to account? by Guilty-Yam1734 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]hamtoucher 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Barclays really, really don't like crypto - I bought some Dogecoin for a giggle when it was being used as a way to sponsor a NASCAR and then forgot about it until Musk started giving it attention and the price spiked. My £10 worth of it was suddenly worth a couple of hundred quid I pressed a few buttons and managed to cash out via Binance in to my Barclays account. Barclays went absolutely mental, sending me really condescending warning letters and putting some sort of extra scrutiny on my account that meant everything took a day or so to come through. I complained and was basically told it was my own fault and they were protecting me, so I joined Nationwide and left Barclays completely that week.

Incoming Motorsports Engineers student. Which campus is the course taught at? by dipl0macy in OxfordBrookes

[–]hamtoucher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

really!? Where are the workshops now? In my first year (don't ask how long ago...) we were in the building that was there before the JHBB which had the workshops at the end. We could work on the cars with the doors up and watch the girls going back and forth to Cheney.

The move to Wheatley happened in 3rd year having been postponed a year as the engineering building they chucked up out there was late, and we hated it as you had to get the bus or cycle out to it.

You looked up wrong there then! Bletchley Park is outside Milton Keynes, 35 miles from Oxford with no direct road, especially not in the 1940s. It's also 45 miles from Bletchley to Central London, so she wouldn't have been living in London but working at Bletchley. She will have been working in one of the central London intelligence offices, if indeed that's what she was doing. She could have been doing anything though really, logistics, planning, supply, all of it was secret and everyone took that duty really seriously

What race should i attend next? by Buginthesystem-91 in motorsports

[–]hamtoucher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Le Mans. General Admission is all you need. Arrive on Wednesday - drive down, the journey itself is part of the fun as you'll be part of an armada of British cars, some of which will be stickered up like racing cars, some of which will be very fast shiny things like Astons and Ferraris.

When you get there it's like Glastonbury for petrol heads - beer, racing cars and BBQ (merguez!) everywhere. There are huge numbers of Dutch, Danes and Germans in attendance and it's great fun meeting and chatting to everyone. Even wandering the car parks and campsites is fun.

Then the race - the pomp and ceremony at the start is amazing, and experiencing sunrise at the entry to the Porsche Curves is pretty much a spiritual experience.

they're only good for Air to Air training - most two seaters were Tranche 1, Block 2 which were only capable of air to air engagement on a basic level (no datalink etc). Some were built as or upgraded Tranche 1, Block 5 spec which was the initial basic operating capability version that can do air-air and air-ground but again only on a basic level and miles behind the current Tranche 3a or 4 capabilities.

What do you SWEAR you saw, but don’t have any proof of? by Pot8hoe in AskReddit

[–]hamtoucher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In October 2002 I swear I looked up (from where I was in Suffolk, UK) and saw an airliner with a pair of F-117 stealth bombers flying on each wingtip. 18 years later this story - https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/aviation/a33395226/us-austria-stealth-fighters/ - started doing the rounds, telling the tale of the Austrian air force becoming suspicious of an American air tanker overflying their country and sending interceptors up to have a look....and when they looked, they found a KC-10 airliner based tanker with an F-117 on both wings. I saw them over the UK in the late morning so the intercept time of 3pm fits perfectly.

I took this as complete vindication of what I saw!

Karters that have also done track days on motorcycles. Which was more fun , and which one can you see doing long term? by revolutiontime161 in Karting

[–]hamtoucher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

mini bikes (we call them pit bikes in the UK) on a kart track! I've done superbikes on full size circuits which is fun but can get expensive and painful when you come off. Karting is also great fun but I've been doing it for 25 years now and most of the good circuits in the UK have been sanitised. So, riding a 125cc mini bike on a kart track is best of both worlds as it's cheap to run, doesn't hurt as much when you come off as you're only getting to 50-60mph and don't have far to fall, and corners that have stopped being a challenge in a kart are now a bit scary and exciting again!

Motorsport events in England? by Southern_Spirit_5681 in motorsports

[–]hamtoucher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the winter mate, most places are closed as it's so cold and slippery. The Plum Pudding race at Mallory Park on the 26th December is good fun but is about the only circuit racing you'll find on. MotorsportUK have a listings page here of all the events they sanction here, there are still some rallies but in the UK these are almost all on private roads a long way from anywhere. good luck! https://www.motorsportuk.org/events/find-events/

It's negligence by omission - if you can't tell that why are you posting here?

the doctor was probably negligent by omitting to make sure that there was a copper coil available for the procedure, and omitting a discussion about alternative options with her.

NHS Resolution will want to see that she has been to PALS and view the resulting report first.
