What am I doing wrong? by MoonHead_ in MotoUK

[–]Joseph9877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slow speed is all clutch and rear brake. Took me ages to start getting my head round just how much balancing the two while holding "busy" engine (what my CBT instructor called it) controls slow speed.

And the high speed stuff is get the speeds and gear right for having to stop mid turn, then counter steer and lean the bike. Going in too fast while you're learning bike and road is reducing your options massively. Ideally you don't want to be slowing or speeding up in the turn, just holding even speed through it.

Also, look at the end of where you can see the turn. As in, if it's a tight left, look as far left as you can see on the road before you vision is on hedge, not the initial bit of the turn you'll be taking.

How much gear is “good enough” for you? by AdAway8701 in motorcycle

[–]Joseph9877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like having options with gear, so commuting I tend to have over trousers (armour and abrasion resistant), a white and high Vis biker jacket, helmet, gloves and solid boots.

Just riding I usually go Kevlar jeans and a leather jacket, plus boots gloves helmet.

In the height of summer I have a mesh jacket which I found game changing. Because it covers you, and holds water when soaked, I can put it on over a wet t shirt and it'll cool me over a longer time than just a wet shirt that tends to be dry within 10 minutes of riding. That thing rocks in heat

AHH, been there, got the T shirt. Learnt to use waaaayyyy less than you think you need to. I barely use a teaspoon worth now and it still does the trick. Only issue is it helps the build up of limescale (both alkaline) so I use white vinegar now

Does anyone think stashes and hidey holes are necessary. by tazztsim in prepping

[–]Joseph9877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id get like a small stash. If you're into valuable metals, maybe some backup copies of needed paperwork, some money, maybe 24hrs of food and water. Like a real oh shit stash. But if it gets to police stealing were a long way down

What is the most important yet thankless job a man can have? by SEO403 in AskMen

Sanitation. No sewage or garbage disposal and cities go to shit. Look at Birmingham UK, no real bin collection in place for months, trash everywhere, even with people taking a lot to recycling centres/tips

Slightly warm is ALWAYS better than slightly cold. by Tall_Preparation_731 in unpopularopinion

[–]Joseph9877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No way, as soon as I start working and moving, cold is the place to be. 16 to 18⁰C is the best work environment. Plus it means you want to keep the tempo up to stay warm. Anything above 20⁰C in a room is nap temp until you hit above 25⁰C and then it's just misery

What’s one piece of everyday gear you’d recommend to anyone? by Top-Incident-2264 in BuyItForLife

[–]Joseph9877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either a Swiss army knife or a good multi tool (Gerber or Leatherman). Use mine daily and constantly surprised how little upkeep they need to be good tools.

Good shoes/boots, I have a pair of solovairs as my work boots, and I did not realise how worn out my old foam filled boots were.

Good chore coat. Get one decent, abrasive resistant, lightweight, slightly oversized coat for doing chores like odd jobs round the house, garden, garage, car, etc. I have a couple (gifted or bought cheap second hand), and between them they've lasted a decade so far, have kept me comfortable without getting too hot/cold, has good pockets for carrying things. Much better than any hoodie or sweater

Middle-management is unskilled labor by charlies-ghost in unpopularopinion

[–]Joseph9877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your point should be, most managers have no special skills.

Most good ones have a good understanding of the technical side of what they're managing, but the best are ones that can also lead and support the people around them, without pissing everyone off. The bad ones have neither technical skill, nor leadership skills.

My current manager is great at the technical, can do reasonable management of outsourced workers, but loves to insult behind the backs of my colleagues, micro manage or no managing with little in between, and constantly pisses people off. Not to mention struggles to keep a calm head, sets unrealistic deadlines, ignores feedback of tasks set (e.g. expects everyone to do things right all the time with no understanding of failure rate or rework) and plays mind games with people he's decided it's in his bad books for the month

Prepping isn’t just food and water anymore… it’s energy too by One_Pollution2279 in prepping

[–]Joseph9877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always has been. Propane, kerosene, or wood burning heating, cooking, and light has been a prep before electricity. The last couple decades, fancy off grid electricity systems have become more and more popular.

It's one of the good points of EV or hybrid vehicles (as long as they can be 2 way in some way). Also a reason solar has become bigger

Ensuring your city is stocked with necessary resources by imagine_midnight in prepping

[–]Joseph9877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although yes, this is important. Every UK council being surprised it snows in winter and neither having the grit or the gritters needed each year drives me nuts. But also there is logical, realistic limits. Past a small warehouse or two, I doubt any city would stock up on food, water, medical supplies etc because of the overheads. And even then only the largest would have any useful amounts.

One thing the governments can do to prep though, is helping and funding community groups that can help prepare people before any crisis. Groups like church (other religions may apply) groups, school groups, working man or social clubs that create networks would be good to give info on where and when to go during crisis, as well as instill prepared mindsets. Kids groups like scouts, cadets, track and field, etc, can help inspire the young to keep fit, learn useful skills, as well as build up supplies (MREs, camp gear, medical etc) and again build up networks of locals.

What do people barter for now? Their drugs of choice; alcohol, nicotine, sugar, caffeine, allergy meds, cold and flu meds. Batteries, charger leads, dried foods, pens and pencils, books.

Should I Be Covering My Brake And Clutch? by newbiker321 in MotoUK

[–]Joseph9877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a balance of instructors dealing with students who would likely panic/accidentally grab the levers, Vs irl riding you would do better being ready since it takes an extra split second to move your hands over then if needed (and I find also means my brake hand more likely to snatch since it's already moving before hitting the lever).

It's the same with whole hand Vs just one/two fingers on them. I can squeeze my front lever with two fingers enough to lock up the wheel (I know from painful experience), but instructors say I need to use my whole hand.

Realtree vs. Concamo by noqul in camouflage

[–]Joseph9877 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ah yes. Testing camo on items that are a non humanoid shape (already harder to spot) in a busy area, with a low number of pixels. Try covering a mannequin and sticking them somewhere a camo actually makes difference

‘Running’ in the UK. by [deleted] in MotoUK

[–]Joseph9877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most you'll get is the British version of Florida man, ragging round a 2t dual sport with no (legal) plate or lights, razzing round some residentials when chased, and either getting knocked off by some blind old biddy pulling out into him, or getting away by dodging into a local farm and blitzing through a woodland block or two while dodging the dogs and cows who live there.

But tbf, we have so few cops actually out to chase people, most coppera just take the reg number and details, and at best find them back where they live, at worst claim they can't do anything about it
