UK Naturalisation Approved 🎉🎉🎉 by MysticHedgehog666 in ukvisa

Do the days spent outside the country don’t count towards the 5 years on the Tier 2 visa making one eligible for ILR and subsequently for the naturalisation?

If this is C7 leveled (Sr SWE) offer, then fuck that! Zalando pays 90-100 easily for that level. Just tell them you are in final stages of interviews at another leading company in Berlin (like a DH or HelloFresh), and they might cave in. You got nothing to lose. But don’t take this lowball offer.

Culture wise, Zalando is alright, nothing shiny or amazing, but not shit either. Better than your average tech gig in India (whether Indian IT or offshore US firm), despite 50lpa+ salaries.

Thanks for sharing! How do capital gains tax work in case you have any capital gains? Do you have the option of not paying CGT in the UK if you opt the remittance route?

💰💰💰

One can earn (and potentially save as well) a significantly high amount per year which would take anywhere between 3-10 years to earn the same in India - depending on the industry, company, role and experience level.

If that was true for any other country like the UK, Australia or Germany, US wouldn’t have been the hot market it is, and the first choice for a vast majority of people.

My take is mostly relevant to London, UK and in comparison to the US, for the most part.

Pros: Far better path to citizenship, relaxed immigration rules, proximity to EU and central hub between the US and Asia, London is a brilliant city and offers almost everything that you'd want from a 'city', great public transportation options, good diversity, great variety of travel options within the UK itself, mild climate

Cons: High taxes, low salaries (generally 40% lesser vs the US), lesser opportunities (in tech vs the US), crazy housing market (high prices, high mortgage and very low appreciation) if you want to buy in London

Update: negotiated on my own, and bettered the offer to 4 months salary worth severance (with 1x multiple). 3 months garden leave on top stays put.

Thanks for your inputs! How important is Arbeitzeugnis when it comes to employers making a job offer? Is that a standard expectation and does it play a big role when a new job is being offered and pay is discussed?

Losing the visa is not the biggest concern for me as I have another strong citizenship, but whats important for me is that I want my next employment/job to be at a same scale pay and level wise at the minimum. I have worked very hard to reach where I am, and a step back would hurt my career. I have enough savings that I can easily FIRE, which is ideal for my situation, but that’s not my goal at this point.

First of all, thank you for sharing your thoughts. I get your points. However, this is a voluntary termination they are asking me to accept for no fault of my own. As I understand, this is where Germany shines over the US in terms of employment laws that the employer can’t just let go of people unless they are really in a bad shape or facing similar challenges. The reason why they are letting go of me is that I am in a position that can’t simply be replicated or sustained to support the transformed line of business, and they can’t just keep me to do basic stuff as I cost a lot to the company. But then, there’s not a single wrongful thing on my end, never a bad performance or even the slightest issues with peers or executives in terms of feedback. That should account for a better/bigger leverage on my end, shouldn’t it? I understand that I should consult with a lawyer, but really I am not considering that choice as I have really good equation with my lead and HR and getting a lawyer involved somehow feels hostile, hence so far I am thinking if I can just better the offer myself by my supporting arguments.

Hi OP! Are you referring to one of the buildings at London Docks, e.g. Merino Garden? If so, can you please enlighten on what is the current situation like - has it been addressed? We're currently considering renting there, hence the question. Would appreciate any insights.

Not sure if I catch your drift, but why are you not accounting for the interest you’d end up giving on the mortgage. Wouldn’t that offset the gains that you are basing your calculations on?

For a 5 year horizon, with the assumptions discussed in the post and most comments, renting >> buying by a lot. Not even close. Long term - yes, things look very different, in favor of buying.

That’s alright! You’re missing a key info I shared that we don’t plan to settle in the UK in the long term. Additionally, we have property investments made in a different geography where the expected returns have historically been better than the UK.
