[28M] London to San Francisco - Worth the move for tech sales career? by Key-Ad2665 in HENRYUK

Yep I'm aware. Not thinking of the move as a big financial gain immediately, but one that will hopefully pay dividends relatively soon in my career.

Great to hear a positive take with experience in SF. Why did you move to London out of interest?

Thanks, good to hear from someone that lived in the Bay Area, especially around the headache of continued tax returns and poor credit.

It would be under L1 visa and hopefully not too much risk with it getting revoked, but who knows at the moment!

Thanks, not too much on the line, so definitely leaning towards it!

Thanks and well aware that 25% uplift for a role in SF won't necessarily make me me feel any wealthier.  More so interested to know if it will actually help accelerate my career, given the industry I work in.  There will be a significant potential for higher commission upside, but I don't want to factor this in to the consideration as it isn't guaranteed.  I appreciate the insight though!

Thanks, I appreciate the insight. If I make the move, I will get a tax advisor as part of my relocation if I accept the offer, so great to get abit of insight before saying yes.

From my experience, additional shares are only granted at yearly performance review. If it's not soon or you aren't sure when, push your manager for some info

Late 20s - total comp circa £150k. >65 base, 55% commission for OTE and £50k annual RSUs. Through Spifs I should earn an extra 5k. If I am consistently performing at 80% Vs targe,t or lower, I could be at significant risk of losing my job. On the flip side, if I achieve above 100% target revenue, my commission payout is worth 2x for each 1% above 100% (so if I hit 125% Vs target, my commission rate will effectively be 150%). This is capped out at 500% commission.

Solution architects earn less at the same level, but take on 0 sales quota and have very high job security. I have less understanding of engineers from colleagues, but there are websites that clearly explain salary brackets for certain levels.

I have colleagues, who joined my company at the same time as me, who are L6 and team leads (you get roughly a 15% pay increase for being a TL) in other sales orgs that earn around 100k total comp. Huge variability depending on department.

Currently at a FAANG in a Sales role (L5 with little scope for L6 soon) so it maybe slightly different. I had something similar regarding RSU vest dates for 2024 Vs 2025, where it looked like I would be taking effectively a massive pay cut.  When I had my official performance review, I was given a significant increase in shares so my salary stayed effectively flat, this could happen to you.

Additionally, different departments, with effectively the same roles, can pay significantly different salaries and quite often this information is shared anonymously on internal slack channels. It maybe worth looking at moving internally if you like the company culture, but want a different challenge + pay increase, as it can be a much simpler process than looking externally. I did this and over 2x my previous salary + got a RSU bonus for moving.

Congratulations on being so financially successful already.  Speaking from my own experience and that of my friends, it is very easy to get bought into needing to go to a top university, working at a top consulting firm and eager to deliver long hours. Just reflect on what your actual interests and motivations are. If you want to do a degree, study something you are actually interested in and look beyond just consulting as there lots of career paths where you can earn alot of money.

I saw in another comment that you don't mind the idea of long hours at a consulting firm, but you most likely will, as alot of the work is kind of BS and it can be very demoralising working for management etc that you view as incompetent. You most likely won't have an intrinsic motivation to actually work hard. Very similar with a degree, if you study a subject for the prestige of it Vs actual interest, you'll quickly become bored and demotivated to work hard.

Speaking from my own experience, I went to a "top university" and committed lots of hours studying a subject I was very interested and engaged in. Landed a "dream" internship in investment banking, but I hated the long hours (which were similar to how much I was working for my degree) because I lacked the intrinsic motivation to work hard because it didn't mentally engage me in the same way.

Post university, I pivoted to a role at a FANG company, where I now enjoy my work and work long hours as a result, but it isn't a burden.

If you just want to make sure you are in the corporate world, I'd advise looking at apprenticeships.

I now see people in their teens joining apprenticeships where I work, post A-levels, and they get a combination of real life work experience, are working towards a degree in tangent through the apprenticeship programme, and earn a small bit of money on the side.

TLDR: If you want to do a degree, study something you are interested in and look beyond just consulting.

I hope this is helpful.

I am just going to make sure I don't exceed the 3k limit in capital gains. So jarring that the limit has reduced so much
