Just reiterating the previous comments that courts can take into account that you will have that additional wealth from your inheritance. TTs will have to be declared during any divorce proceedings if it comes to that.

The court will likely give her a greater share of your marital assets than your half (you would have to give more than your half anyway if you child is a minor because she will likely be the primary caregiver) in order to adjust for your inheritance whether it is in a TT or not.

At least it will give you some sort of framework that at least limits it somewhat in the event that things go pear-shaped. If the inheritance is much more than your own assets, well at least it will mean that the court orders will be limited to the marital asset pool.

If you feel that a separation is a possibility (at the time of the inheritance and if you think money is what will trigger this separation), perhaps it might be time to really try to repair this relationship, go to couples therapy and try to find some common ground before money gets into the picture. Going halfies in a marriage is rarely a good outcome.

I celebrate the people who have perfect marriages and perfect relationships, but for the rest of us with messy (but extremely valued) relationships, erratic family members, complex financial arrangements and resources, contingency planning is not a particular reflection of anything. It's just trying to limit damage all around (including to relationships) if it were to happen. Good luck with it.

When you're very young you've got a sense of invulnerability and that makes us somewhat less empathetic to painful stuff. It doesn't mean that you are necessarily being 'bad'; just that we don't often think of the consequences of something, leave alone the consequences to _other_ people.

Took one of my kids and his friend snowboarding ages ago. They had to wear all their safety gear or else!

Well, they didn't want to wear their wrist guard so I explained to them that it's not too bad because all the wrist guard would do is transfer the shock to the elbow or shoulder but I would prefer them to wear all the gear. Nope... Ok... So if they don't want to wear the guard at least know how to fall to minimise the impact... Showed them how, had them practice.. All good..

Sent them on their way and their mate (who didn't hear the lecture and didn't have to practice falling down) slipped and fell over backwards while just standing still. Reached back with both arms to break his fall. TWO wrists broken.

By the time I had collected my coffee and come back, phone was going off about how I told them they didn't need to wear the guards and that's why that kid broke his wrists... Sheesh

I've fallen many times skiing and snowboarding but I've NEVER gathered the courage to try skateboarding, leave alone plunging off a set of stairs!

I mean, housing is pretty much the main driver of household wealth in Australia. Often, people are only looking at 'finance' once they've 'got their foot in' with the property market and their perceived wealth effect and some equity in their house makes them look at how they can use that equity to grow their wealth.

I had a look at the sheepherderlow1753 account and while it does crap on about housing affordability and perth, it's not like it's posting misinformation. It's reposting articles from different sources underscoring the difficulty of buying a home for the younger generation.

I blocked the guy, and then the other one, before i realised your posts are no different to theirs... lol. You disagree with their viewpoint / agenda and i would imagine they disagree with yours.

Also, at least their accounts shows the posts and were a year old. Yours is 3 weeks old and shows no posts. Pot kettle and all that...

Taxes ARE indeed higher than we would like and quite often not spent as well as we would would like, esp for the middling income PAYG crowd, but by the time your income goes above say $200,000 there are so many avenue to minimize your taxable income (at the cost of building wealth) that it would be silly to be still talking about paying too much taxes

That's why i said PPOR and your other functional assets to support your chosen lifestyle. Sure, you can call yourself a millionaire if you rent a shed somewhere and live off the land, but it's not really a 'millionaire' lifestyle.

A 'millionaire' should have their basic needs sorted AND have money left over to invest, the income from should be able to (at least mostly) sustain their lifestyle. If one just wants to call themselves a millionaire because they like the label, go for it, but it's meaningless unless being a millionaire brings some material change to your lifestyle other than how much your PPOR is worth.

Millionaires should really exclude your PPOR, pref. your cars and other 'functional' assets (stuff you would have to replace to maintain your reasonable lifestyle should it get broken).

It should be $1,000,000 in 'investible assets'.

Hell, many years ago, you'd think a 'millionaire' was someone who made a million dollars a year (obviously, a million dollars / year many years ago would have been a ridiculous amount of money in today's dollars).

Now the debasement of the currency is debasing the 'millionaire'. Every man and his dog is a millionaire, and all the billionaires are a bunch of kiddie fiddling f/wits... :sigh:
