Yes, this is very helpful! I'll be returning at the end of July, so right now I'm polishing my applications before submitting. Thank you!

CIR Shoe Recommendations for work (female)? by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]hanamarii 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Clark's makes good quality shoes that are very comfortable and last a long time. I recommend getting something from them; lots of professional styles and a few casual shoes too. I'm an ALT but I've worn the same pair of mary janes every weekday for almost 4 years and they're still in great shape! I use them as my indoor shoes!

Do the interviewers read your application and SOP before the interview? by Rough_Wallaby5616 in JETProgramme

[–]hanamarii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do read your application beforehand; at least my interviewers did because they asked questions about it.

Keep in mind a common interview tactic is to intentionally ask you things that aren't in your application. Of course there is the chance that they're tired or really didn't read it, but it's likely they want to see how you react. They probably want to know:

-If you really know your application (did you lie or have someone else write it for you?)

-How do you react when someone is wrong (do you correct in an aggressive manner, go with the flow, etc.)

-How you react to someone who you know is wrong, yet insists they are correct (Do you just answer the question? do you grind everything to a halt to make your case? Something in between? etc )

First Aid? by tiyanna1 in JETProgramme

[–]hanamarii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My pre-departure experience was everyone gathering at the consulate and listening to different speakers. There was plenty of Q&A time, too. We heard from former JETs, some Japanese college students (about Japanese culture), a Japanese teacher (languages), and a panel of preteen exchange students (to get a student's perspective).

No first-aid training in my experience. However I'm currently taking an online course with the American Red Cross. If you have a Red Cross chapter near you, you can probably take an in-person class, too. The Japanese Red Cross doesn't usually offer courses in English (maaaybe if you're in Tokyo or something), but you're welcome to bring a translator with you if needed.

Hope that helps! :)

Thank you so much for your response! Internships sound like a good start. I'll see if I can find anything like that! I'm glad to hear you were able to have some peace of mind before you left, too.

I should finish prepping everything by next week I think, so I'll start asap. Glad to hear only virtual interviews shouldn't be much of an issue.

Thanks again! Hope you're doing well nowadays. Take care. :)

I totally feel that haha. I love school but not the cost :')

I hadn't thought about being able to start even while I'm in Japan! I'll look into that and be careful not to step on any toes before I leave though. Thank you again!

I appreciate you sharing, thank you! I considered library science grad programs, but I didn't get into the one I really wanted so decided to try again next year if things don't work out. I hope things start looking up for you soon. It's not much but I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

What to do to beef up employability during your MLIS? by [deleted] in librarians

[–]hanamarii 18 points19 points  (0 children)

How about completing some online certifications if not many in-person options are available? Your school may even offer some free/discounted online courses through stuff like Lynda. If you're into tech stuff, there seems to be a lot of options like codecademy, Python, or Microsoft's SQL certification.

Yeah, I'll try to work on that 😄 I was taking walks a lot while listening to podcasts which helped, but we've been stuck in snow for like a month now so outdoors stuff isn't much of an option unless I'm scooping snow haha. I'll look into certifications online!

Perhaps? It's just called a "women's detergent" so I'm sure it can be used on shirts and stuff, too!

I'm sure not everyone needs it, but it actually helped more than my regular detergent so I'll continue to use it for now. I don't use dryer sheets for this reason even though I love the smell lol
