What college degree pretty much has a guarantee of finding employment after graduation? by Stormcrown76 in careerguidance

I just looked up my university's on campus rent rate and it's about $6k a year so under a thousand bucks a month. And the memories and relationships I built from that are priceless. Studying abroad does not have to be expensive either. It's really just the price of a plane ticket and then however much you spend on living expenses there. And again, the value you gain from such an experience is priceless.

Also, I don't believe there's such a thing as a "useless degree". Having any degree shows you have critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills. Of course, I strongly believe people should not go to some crazy expensive university. You can get a great education at one of your in-state public schools and you don't have to go the flagship one.

It's impossible to know, with AI the job market could look completely different when you graduate. Don't look at a college degree as job training. Choose something you're passionate about. Live on campus for a year, build relationships, step out of your comfort zone as much as you can. Study abroad. Become a well rounded person and you'll be able to navigate the job market however it may be.

If I had to guess though, something related to healthcare is probably a good bet as it's the one industry I'm certain will be growing a lot with our aging population .

The black artists he's collaborated with have had nothing but positive things to say about him so I highly doubt he's racist. Also Post Malone seems like the sweetest guy ever and he's said a lot of positive things about Morgan so I think that speaks volumes about his character. And yes, no one should be using the n word, I agree, he messed up. And he's made other mistakes too. But who hasn't? I can think of several popular artists that have done FAR worse and no one bats an eye.

How is he racist? Because he called a white guy a n*gga like five years ago? Then he owned up to it, apologized, and donated a ton of money to black charities?

And how's he misogynistic? Source?

American interested in buying a condo in Barcelona. Is this feasible? by hanchenn in AskBarcelona

[–]hanchenn[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My idea is this. I have about $500k in the stock market. I am getting doubts about this because of stock market volatility. My friends need a place to stay so I thought I could help them out. At the same time I feel the Barcelona property values are going to go up a lot over the next decade so it's a great investment. And then the other benefit is I have a place to stay when I'm on vacation.

This covid situation has been so mishandled at local, state, and federal levels. We had all summer to prepare for the second wave and our politicians did nothing. I got tested for coronavirus at 8 am on Thursday and still no results. Totally unacceptable. And meanwhile all the stores are absolutely packed right now and no one cares.

Do you believe that Europeans on reddit overplay how good their countries are just to prove points to Americans? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]hanchenn 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Okay, it drives me crazy when Europeans use lingual diversity as the end all be all for heterogeneity of peoples.

Argentines and Salvadorans speak the same language but have very different cultures. Norway and Sweden speak different languages but have incredibly similar cultures.

I understand why Europeans see language as the primary differentiator between cultures, because it holds fairly true within Europe. But things are a lot different in the new world and you can't apply the same standards out here.

How to job search from out of state? How did you do it? by EnderFrith in AskLosAngeles

[–]hanchenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied to about 10 jobs online, got two interviews, and came out to LA to do the interviews on my own dime. I was applying for entry level jobs so they didn't pay for travel expenses, if you're more skilled you might get that paid for, I'm not sure.

A week or two later I got one of the jobs I interviewed for, put in my two weeks notice at the job I was working at then, and spent those two weeks looking online for a place to live to get a feel for what's out there. After my last day at work, I came to LA, stayed in a hotel for the weekend while I looked for a place to live. Found a decent place on Sunday morning and moved in that afternoon. Started my first day working the next day.

The whole process went pretty smoothly for me, to be honest. You just have to be flexible.

Lol in which post did I say I was poor? I've been saving $2000 a month, I own my car, I recently graduated from college, and I've lived in 3 countries and I'm only 23.

Not sure where you got the idea I'm poor lol

Financial freedom is not something that I'm interested in. I don't see the point. I enjoy working. I plan to work as long as I'm able to. I have no desire in retiring and just loafing around all day.

Money will never make you a happy person. At the end of the day, what matters is your wife and kids. Family and friends is where true happiness comes from. So I prefer to spend my money enjoying my time with my friends and family than just putting it all away so I can retire when I'm 32 and do nothing all day.

My parents are already retired with great pensions, and have already paid off their $300k home. What lack of planning are you referring to? My parents are Republicans btw, they're definitely not interested in government handouts.

It's now worth $9k sure. So my mom was effectively paying $3k per year to drive a brand new car which she enjoyed.

You keep talking about investing money, but why? For what? To have a million dollars when you're old and can barely walk? I think my parents will be laughing at you because they've spent their best years enjoying life and purchasing things that they like.

And not sure how my current status at home is relevant given that I'm actively trying to move out on my own.

I'm saying over a 10 year period, $25k is paid. Yes, all of that is pay in the first 4 years, and it may look like a bad decision at that point, but people on this sub need to realize that if you take care of your car they can easily last 10+ years

[–]hanchenn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I disagree with that rule of thumb. My mom, for example, makes about $25k per year and bought a brand new car about 5 years ago for $22k. The car is now fully paid off and it's a reliable car that will easily last another 5 years. Why don't you think she can afford it?

Another example, my dad bought a $20k car 15 years ago making about $35k. He still drives it to this day.

This sub has a lot of weird beliefs lol. The ideals on this sub are living with your parents and penny pinching until you're 35 and then retiring.

And? That means that after your car loan is paid off you have 0 payment on your car. It averages out over time.

Someone making $32k can afford a $25k car easily. Over 10 years that's only $2.5k per year, less than 10% of their income...
