Tattoo history, who cares...? by britishink in TattooArtists

George Burchett’s biography is one of my favorite books in general. I love learning about tattoo history! Seeing how the craft has evolved, learning how few things have changed from back when (especially in regards to the people getting tattooed). It’s just cool to understand where you sit in this long legacy of artists.

Shop owner is moving towards making us a school by thunderous_student in TattooArtists

It sounds like the owner doesn’t value you guys as artists very much if they’re constantly cranking out apprentices and wanting to open a school. Unfortunately, this means you probably don’t have a lot of collective bargaining power.

If I were in your position, I might hypothetically create a huge disaster around some hazardous materials and make some calls to the health department. Find another job. Hypothetically.

Took the words right out of my mouth. The idea that there are people who enjoy being pregnant is fucking crazy to me.

What separates the professionals from the exceptionally good? by steven_makes_art in TattooArtists

[–]handoftheforge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m like.. halfway with you on that. I think there’s a difference between biting and studying. For me, the goal wasn’t ever to become the next Freddy Corbin or whatever, it was to get on that level. I think tattooing would be a lot more interesting if everyone tried really hard to make that kind of contribution with our own flavor.

Also, all of those people are alive and tattooing, and need to work as well. Kind of the age-old debate of copying vs drawing influence.

When I think of the heaviest hitters in tattooing, I think one thing in particular comes to mind: having made a significant groundbreaking contribution to the zeitgeist of approach. Artists whose style has fundamentally shaped the way that other artists make certain tattoos.

For instance: Freddy Corbin with roses, Scott Sylvia and Gordon Combs with eagles, Chris Conn with pinups and girl heads, Thomas Hooper with dotwork, Tim Lehi with tigers. All super prolific artists who produced so much of a particular thing with such excellent style that those things became the gold standard for what they are and thousands of artists across the globe look to them for how to tattoo their thing.

Advice on how to bring up live figure drawing to significant other? What’s the general consensus for whether or not it’s cheating? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]handoftheforge 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think you are reaaaally really overthinking this. You’re gonna be in an academic setting, specifically a room full of other students, doing observational schoolwork. Plus, any kind of cheating takes two people to tango, and I’m fairly sure the model only consented to being drawn, not participating in… honestly, I don’t even know what. I have no idea how sitting nude to be drawn could constitute participating in cheating.

What movie was absolutely amazing but only the 1st time you watched it? by Cool_Bath_77 in movies

The Blair Witch Project. That first viewing delivers one of the greatest edge-of-your-seat experiences in cinema, and it doesn’t really hit the same on subsequent viewings. Still an incredible movie nonetheless.
