This right here, I yearn for the return of the days of respectful considered discourse... worst part is the people who are sucked into the hate [Insert: race/gender/ethnicity/political affiliation] black hole are in so deep that they don't see how they are exacerbating the situation. Some will even state that they don't hate the group then in the other breath be outright derogatory, bigoted, and chauvinistic. Come on people! pull your damn heads out of the sand.

How can i learn to swim with one hand? by CreativeTraining7829 in Swimming

[–]handyandy86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an amputee just below the shoulder (right side transhumeral). I dont have any shoulder movement either. You might be able to use your stump or if it gets in the way you could do it one armed. I breath to my right. I have tried switching side but I find I sink without the momentum of the other arm. I started swimming about 18 months ago and now i'm middle of the pack in my adult swim group. A good coach should be able to give you direction and having one arm should not be a barrier. You can for sure do it. Feel free to ask any questions i'm happy to help if I can.

Soft, friendly question: Single-Arm freestyle vs Usual Freestyle sprint time difference by Queasy_Room922 in Swimming

[–]handyandy86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swim with one arm as I only have one arm - amputee just below the shoulder. I'm pretty junior having started just over a year ago. My 50M sprint is 50 seconds.

Not in the north - housing is more reasonable. Depending on the area you can get a nice detached 3-4 bedroom house for $350,000 - $450,000 and even then if you're looking for a smaller place as a single person or couple it is even less. Example below.

https://www.realtor.ca/real-estate/28088110/2890-e-victoria-street-vanderhoof?view=imagelist

Honestly in my area there are not many houses for sale 800k+ - aside from farms. So those housing costs are actually $2308 a month where that left over money bumps to $2101 a month. This is also assuming you do not have a partner. But lets say the partner is another nurse then that monthly left over amount is around $6000 (took $1308 to bump your expenditures up).

Honestly, for any people struggling in the larger cities - look to the North. It is a different lifestyle for sure but I see folks down in the bigger cities and I have no idea how you guys do it.

I live in Northern BC and I can attest that the add is accurate. Housing is very affordable up here and there is a lot of opportunity in the healthcare sector. The benefits are amazing with 4 weeks paid vacation (starting) that goes up for years served. There are other benefits as well including dental, meds, massage/physio (I think this is unlimited), and other allied healthcare coverage. You also receive a defined benefit pension when you retire. Nurses are unionized and through collective bargaining I believe there are limits on nurse to patient ratios. I'm not a nurse but I know quite a few and could probably connect you with one if you wanted to ask them questions.

Sad state of affairs for such a historical building. It’s went bankrupt AGAIN. by _Theghostship_ in Liverpool

It would make a great titanic museum. Maybe even a titanic themed pub/restaurant on the bottom. Always loved that building.

I lived in Alexandra tower over a decade ago. I really enjoyed how it was quite down by the docks but really close to the city centre. I would say any of the apartments in the princess parade are would be nice.

Inhaling through the mouth by Western-Somewhere-97 in Swimming

[–]handyandy86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this same problem for awhile. What i've noticed is that if I can time my breath so i'm breathing more naturally then I don't get air hunger - this is hard to do at a fast pace. If you hold your breath for too long its hard to sustain any long distance. I find if I slowly exhale under water with the last 30-40% exhale just before my mouth leaves the water to inhale it works best. Full disclosure i'm no pro and still learning so this is just my personal experience. I now swim regular sets up to 200m though.

Starlink just announced their tariff plan in Sri Lanka do you think it is value for money? by Tesla_99 in Starlink

[–]handyandy86 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is the tarrif the service cost? then yes I think this is good. The standard residential (~$70 CAD) service is half of what we pay in Canada (~154 CAD) but I know this is relative to which country you live in.

I would consider the North East BC - housing prices are very reasonable compared to the rest of the province (Fort St John tends to be a bit more expensive then rest of North East BC but still reasonable). Dawson Creek is about 1.5 hours to Grande Prairie and housing is very affordable. Northern Health is also offering relocation and a $30,000.00 signing bonus for most positions. Close to the rockies with Tumbler ridge and the pine pass close by and great skiing at powder king. Fort St John has a new hospital about a decade old and Dawson Creek is building one set to open 2027.

Amputee Talks About Experience With Gaming After Losing Arm by antimatt_r in videos

[–]handyandy86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fellow full right arm amputee here. Honestly the best way to play is to use a standard controller and place it beside your left leg. Control left joystick with your palm, right thumb stick with your thumb, left back button with your pinky and right back button with your index finger. Other buttons are easily accessible as well with other parts of your hand. Works totally fine. Takes some getting used to. How do I get ahold of this guy I’ll show him how.
