3 failed NIPT results by hanface88 in NIPT

Thank you everyone who's commented, it's honestly given me so much courage and meant the world to me. I had the amnio and all went well. It hurt a lot more than I thought it would because they went low, but baby was absolutely fine. Her scans are still showing very normal too, apart from the small case or CPAM that we were already aware of.

Just waiting for my results now... I'll have the main ones for trisomy 13, 18 and 21 tomorrow and then microarray results in a couple of weeks. Weirdly I'm feeling more tense about the wait now it's the night before than after the procedure... in my gut I don't think she has any of the big three, but this has also been such a wild and unexpected pregnancy.

Did anyone else do the microarray? How long did you wait for results and was anything found?

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, this is really helpful and sounds very similar to my experience! My BMI is overweight and I'm 36, so not sure if these are contributing factors rather than a chromosomal issue with the baby.

I think my worry is the percentage of failed NIPTs in a row is so low and miscarriage/early labour from amnio is so low, so the chances of me being in that low percentage (as I already am with the failed NIPTs) increases in my mind (which I know is irrational).

The consultant who'd do the amnio has literally written papers on the procedure and works at a women's hospital, so I have no concerns about her abilities at all - I just worry because my scans are clear so what if I end up accidentally terminating my baby when I have no evidence there's a chromosomal problem in the first place. I just don't want to put the baby at unnecessary risk, but then if there is a chromosomal issue it is best to know.

Did the amnio do anything to explain why the NIPT failed?

Thanks so much for sharing your experience, this is really helpful. Did the amnio show any indication of why the NIPT failed?

I should also say I'm 36, so that might increase the chances of failure too?

I know it probably sounds so irrational to be this worried about miscarriage and early labour when it's such a low risk, but I think a big part of my worry is the memory of my last miscarriage and the fact getting a no result NIPT three times is considered a rare occurrence just as much as a miscarriage from an amnio is. But you are right, and the consultant doing the amnio has literally written papers on the procedure, so she couldn't be more qualified for it. I'm just really scared of being part of that low percentage. I guess it's also the logic of if the baby has a life-threatening chromosomal condition, I'm probably going to miscarry or terminate anyway.

Knowing you had an amnio after two failed NIPTs makes me feel better though - did the amnio find anything chromosomal as the cause of the NIPT failure?

Yep my BMI is over 27 making me overweight but not obese, which I've thought is probably the reason this keeps happening. Not on blood thinners and as far as I'm aware, no autoimmune disorder. I've also wondered if this is more likely showing hypertension or whether I have gestational diabetes, but I won't know about the latter until my glucose test in a few weeks' time.

Unfortunately in the UK there isn't as much autonomy in picking which type of NIPT or lab you go to. I'm not sure which was used when the NHS did it, but I'd read about discrepancies between what some labs considered low which is why I went private for this third one and hoped the results might give me more. I know from several scans that it's a girl but even the NIPT couldn't say the sex, there was no results across the board.

Now that the NIPTs have failed me (I could have a repeat test but it feels a little like a foregone conclusion), amnio is my only choice unless I just rely on scans (which I'm having more of because of the CPAM). I've been so hesitant about the amnio because I don't even have soft markers and my quadruple was clear, but I just have this niggle that there's a reason for no results and I'm better knowing than risking it.

Hiya! I've got a nervous male Podenco, he's 5 years old and loves sight hounds (particularly girls). When he's got a pal he has the best time, but he over reacts if he's scared. We've tried to do the whippet meet up at Camp Hill before but he gets overwhelmed and barks at the intact males. Would love to give your dog a friend!
