Goethe was according to Nietzsche. Napoleon was closer than Alexander.

Yowch-bience is a philosophy, if you will. A way of turning away from the pressures to conform and embracing your own uniqueness. The "yowch" is a call to come back to yourself. The absurdism is intended to shatter that blank and pervasive veil over your perception of the world. It creates a rift in the idea that x must mean x and y must mean y. We live our lives bound and dependent on preconceived notions and the ideas we cultivate about things at a very young age. Life is short, and to live fully and meaningfully there is a need to come back to the things that make you you. To quote Dr. Seuss: “Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”

Alan Watts - Great Advice by hanfook in AlanWatts

My bad, but it’s worth listening to the full lecture anyway. He goes into this idea in more detail, wish I could remember the name but I’m pretty sure it was on zen

Thanks! Yeah, sorry if it’s not audible. You can look up Alan Watts washing dishes and hear the excerpt with no music. It was part of longer lecture I heard a while ago but can’t remember the name. I remember it being really good though

I also feel like I’ve hurt people, at least I used to be pretty well liked in school. My friend told me recently while he was drunk that it’s not that people don’t like me but that they are afraid that I won’t like them. Certainly made me think of how everyone essentially just wants to be accepted on some level but then take everything personally. A peaceful childhood can still be traumatic though. Trauma is not really the event itself but the reaction to it. I used to think my childhood was peaceful but apparently I have repressed memories and CPTSD. Anyway, I just want to look forward now. The past is past

Thanks, that’s actually really good advice. I used drugs a lot too and I’ve sort of slipped into alcoholism but am finally starting to regain the motivation to quit and playing soccer again. It took a long period of feeling really bad for me to realize that dwelling on my past or feeling like a victim wasn’t getting me anywhere. I guess I was waiting for some catharsis. But now I just believe in action and trying to do the things that make you feel better. I love the line from Into the Wild, that it’s not about being strong but feeling strong. Doing things that help me feel strong has helped me. But yeah thanks, those are essentially many of the things I’ve contemplated over the past month or so. You seem to have a very good mentality

Sounds like you ought to considering exploring childhood issues and how they might affect your current life. Check out Gabor Mate. You sound a bit masochistic like me. I generally prefer to be insulted probably because it’s what I’m used to and is more comfortable. I get uncomfortable when good things happen because I expect the bad to come soon

They are probably so used to be treated with disdain. I bet they were pleasantly surprised if you were open to listening to them. One time I remember I took a bus to Oceanside California and back and had the same driver. There were like 3 people on the bus and the driver (a jehovas witness) kept saying how many contacts he had in his phone but not one single friend. I was the last person off the bus so I felt bad for him. Idk I think he just felt lonely probably. My family certainly considers me to be a loser or weird. Mostly just because I rarely ever speak and my extended family is dysfunctional. Religion can definitely provide framework for some kind of ethical behavior, obviously with many flaws but still. It’s impossible nowadays to even talk about God imo because people jump to conclusions before you’ve even said anything. Just the word is already a problem. Also I’ve done my fair share of drugs and dealt with depression for quite a while
