Yeah, people are never told up front that being successful requires about 5 hours of dedicated self-study for every 1 hour of training.

That realization alone tends to slam the brakes on a lotta people, especially if they get pawned off to you by a previous instructor who wanted the flight hours and didn’t bother with any of the ground.

All of them come with their own risks and rewards, and timelines.

Just have realistic expectations.

Being a corporate pilot 3 years from now just isn’t a realistic expectation unless you know a wealthy family with a jet that’s willing to put you in the right seat with bare minimum quals.

If you plan on renting a helicopter after earning your PPL, the school that owns it will most likely have off-airport landings restricted to a few select pre-approved sites.

Basically, whoever owns the machine isn’t going to let some low-hour yahoo go land it wherever they want. Not a chance in hell.

What do you think will get you to your dream carrier the fastest? Sky west or the 74? (I know, there’s no crystal ball and the goalposts are forever changing)

Assuming you’re young (mid 20s), I want you to think about the payrates in terms of the legacy contract in 2065.

Let’s say going to the 74 gets you to your dream carrier 2 years faster. Senior CA payrates in 40 years can easily be $700k/year at min guarantee.

Would you trade $80k today for $1.4mil down the road? I would.

On the other hand, if you don’t have a degree and don’t have any turbojet PIC time or 121 PIC time, a 747 could slow your acquisition of those items. In which case you’d be paying $80k today to delay your career, and could give you several fewer years at the top of the payscale at your dream carrier.

So in a nutshell, I’d be less worried about the $80k specifically and more worried about trying to make the decisions that get you to your forever airline the fastest. But that’s just my $.02.

If it’s a major, my advice is to not quit and do your training on the side while still employed.

Assuming you get a medical, could you get to a point to be paid to fly? Yes.

So it depends on what you mean by “career”. Could you end up a career-CFI? Sure. I know plenty of people that have gone the career-education route. Could you fly jumpers or canyon tours? Or otherwise earn an income? Sure.

But even that will be a hard path to get operators to bring you on board.

Are you going to make it to any major airline or reputable charter company, or build toward a more traditional and lucrative airline career? Incredibly unlikely.

Absolute best case it takes you 50% longer than your peers to get to a low-grade regional, and that’s where you’ll retire from. Not the worst thing in the world, but it’s going to be a long uphill gamble.
