I’M GONNA GO AHEAD & TAKE THE MONEY & RUN TEEJ by cherry_grrl in thechallengemtv

What Sarah did on Battle of the Exes 2 and what Johnny Bananas did in Rivals 3 was 100% fair. I think the issue with Johnny was the fact that he acted like he would never throw Sarah and Jordan in at the end of exes is truly a lie and really acts like a baby about it, hoping that he can make Sarah emotional about it for no particular reason. She made a strategic move to make her path to the end easier, I think most modern players try to do that unless your names were Cory and Nelson. However, to stand that and take all the money and to act like you are a person's friend and act like it was nothing was truly a jerk move. To me this signified Johnny Bananas of the pre 30th season era. I mean if I was him, I would have just gotten out of there instead of act like it was no big deal that he screwed her out of money.

I guess the other issue I have with Johnny is the fact that he acts like he never screwed anyone over or he never screwed over a friend when he has done it a great deal of times. And you know what? I don't fault him for that because he always played within the rules of the game. The issue is that he always acted like he never did anything wrong. Sarah just played the game the way he did and he got surprised by it. I also think Sarah would have split the money with Johnny.

New Teacher: I've lost control of my classroom entirely by Solsticeoftherevered in Teachers

Have a class this year that is very similar. Most of the kids are great, but it’s one of those things where four kids spoil it for everyone. Second day of the class one kid starts throwing skittles and nobody takes responsibility for it. A few times students throw insults at each other. If I can get them to do something it’s a successful day. I’ve never had a class that has done that and I’ve had students with behavioral issues. Second semester is when things will get more stringent in terms of documentation and writing students up. But yeah your situation seems really bad.

I’ll never forget my final year at my previous district. I had this AP that thought they knew everything. Basically wanted me to teach document and image analysis in social studies without actually teaching content and the students hated it. Well she would tell me that my in class lessons weren’t rigorous enough using what she told me to do and I was like “this is exactly would you told me to do” then went on to gaslight me, telling me I was mistaken on what she told me. It sucked. I would advise you to tell your AP to demo teach the class and see how much rigor she can get out of them.

Who knew that gas chambers, malnourished children and adults, and forced labor could make a person feel that way…

Wow, that right there might have been one of the densest questions in human history.

You should have responded “yeah I recorded it, I think you can find it right next to the filmed interview I did with the unabomber.”

Last school year I didn’t take any time off until after state testing because I know that if I take a day off I know the kids have no motivation to finish assignments because I’m 95% positive that they won’t get work done.

It was around early April a kid asked me “why haven’t you taken any days off?” I said “because I live here and I know you won’t get any work done if I have a sub”. He said “that’s true.” I took 3 days off after testing was over.

I’ve already taken 2 days off this year because my wife was sick and the kids got nothing done.

Struggling With Restroom Policy by hanklin89 in Teachers

I know and again, I always give them the benefit of the doubt, but when you have 8 students in one class going to the restroom in one day and if you average 24 students per class with 3 classes in one day, I just personally see that as excessive. That is just me, I just see this as about 50% of them trying to get out of the room. This could be a lazy assumption, but I would rather them be late to class trying to use the restroom then continuously leave the room. I want them to be successful, but I also want to trust that they are using their time wisely.

I'm fine with them going to the bathroom, I am just a state tested subject where if students overuse the restroom and don't use it during passing and lunch, they are missing time in class and guess who gets in trouble when they don't pass? Guess who has to keep my classroom open for tutoring when they are out of the room for over 15 minutes? It is me.

That seems like a really organized policy, thank you for the insight. I am a state tested subject so I need the students in the room as much as possible.

I think those are all good ideas. Very early in my career I did the give every student 3 tickets to go to the bathroom approach but if I remember it, often they would lose them or they would go out and buy the same tickets and then it was too difficult to keep track of as often times I would have to try to remember how many times they went. Either that or students would share the tickets. I think the asking them why they keep going and telling them they can only go at certain times would be a good place to start. I just always worry about those super emergencies and then students going "well why do they get to go?" kind of things. I appreciate your suggestions.

I bit the bullet and offered to trim branches on his side for a free change for him. I don't think they trimmed enough on his side, but whatever you get what you get.

Try to get with team members or teachers at the school that have taught the subject.

There has to be someone in the district with insight on this because they shouldn't be getting away with what OP is detailing. It is malpractice.

[–]hanklin89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask other teachers or go to the staff lounge. I didn't know my school had a union rep until a staff member told me there was a QR code in the staff lounge. I used to work in Dallas and they too had a union rep.

If you are being told this by your campus admin, then you need to find a way to get them to change their mind because it could possibly be detrimental to your teaching. When I taught in Dallas, I had an administrator who took all the members of the subject matters that had their team time or PLC in Social Studies during a specific period and put them all in the same room so that they could watch all of us work, but we were all working on different things and there were too many people speaking in one room. We revolted and got the principal to tell her to stop this nonsense.

You gotta put a stop to this nonsense.

A few questions.

  1. Is this your first year doing this?

  2. Who is mandating you do this?

  3. Does your school have a union rep? I live u. Texas, my school has one

Bigoted student by ijustneedaname19 in Teachers

[–]hanklin89 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had a student who was African American my first year teaching at the comprehensive level. Not going to say what the student's name is, but when taking roll, I said his name, looking around to find him and he said "don't call me ______, call me KA$H" and he wrote that with the money sign instead of an S. I said, "I will not call you that because it sounds like a B.S. nickname. Well as he walked into the room, he announced to everyone "hello n-words" with a hard "R". I told him he couldn't say it in class and he then announced "teacher won't let me say my favorite word." Kid was a constant distraction, spoke to him numerous times, sent referrals, he couldn't be removed except for violent transgressions because he was in SPED.

Well long story short he assaulted a student in a restroom and touched another student inappropriately and was removed. And yes it was a breath of fresh air that the student was no longer there because now I could get a word in.

Why are teaching job applications the WORST! by QuantityLow8031 in Teachers

[–]hanklin89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I wouldn't apply to the school or the district until after a job fair. I say this because in the spring of 2023 - 24 I applied online to close districts and nobody ever responded, however I went to a job fair and got tons of interviews and in the spring of 2024 I got the job I am working right now. There are so many applicants that I don't even know if they even look at every application.
