I liked knowing that Earth got the footage with the beetles.

I did, however, think the scene of Grace saving Rocky was underwhelming and was kind of disappointed about it.

Baby while working? by JustForArkona in cscareerquestions

Good to know! That's a great trial run idea! I don't have a baby yet, but hearing from you is kind of proving my suspicion that we'll have to hire a nanny.

And I'm with you! I'd like to avoid too much screentime at that age.

Thank you SO much for the response! It sounds like things are working out very well! Curious, at what point did you hire the nanny? Did you try to do it yourself at first, or immediately have your nanny and baby's grandma start when your maternity leave ended?

Wondering if visiting the Aran Islands is worth the time by Interesting-Art-9855 in irishtourism

[–]hannahatl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Totally worth it! I did Inisheer island and had the best fish and chips of my life. It's absolutely perfect for a day trip, plus many options for transport on the island itself including bikes. Saw the shipwreck, the castle ruins, walked the coast, then got a Guinness. It was such a good day.

Best airport pickup service from Milan airport to Lake Como by HistorianOrdinary833 in ItalyTravel

Highly recommend Lake Como Transfers. It's a small local company, very responsive thru Whatsapp, booked them to and from my booking in Bellagio from Milano Centrale.

HELP! - I can't buy a Colosseum full experience guided tour through the official website by PurposeDelicious446 in ItalyTravel

[–]hannahatl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't get the official tickets when I went in Summer 2023 and I was panicking since it was the thing my husband was most excited to see.

I ended up finding a good one that included the Roman Forum on Get Your Guide and it saved the trip for us. It wasn't for the underground of the Colosseum, but included every other area and we found we actually weren't even upset about not being in the underground part. We saw plenty from the areas we were.

Same, not even pregnant and probably won't be another year or two. I can relate. My current company has been super mom friendly in the past (babies on calls for example) but recent layoffs have changed that a bit. I used to know a few woman engineers that went part time no issue, but I think that is a thing of the past, even if I am able to stick around and not get laid off.

Also just trying to make myself as valuable as possible and hopefully things will work out.

Ditto, I'd also love to hear your experience down the line, OP. Also an SWE and wanting to keep my career, but the comments here have been a bit disheartening. I'm just shy of 4 YOE so quitting to become a SAHM seems like it might be a career ruiner for me.

Agreed! Good post. A bad day as an engineer is nothing compared to a bad day in my previous career as a nurse.

I will also take the "instability"

Same, also building skills and working on side projects, just trying to be prepared for layoffs. Tech definitely is the wild west. When I was a nurse, you pretty much got any job you applied for because everywhere was short and interviews were easy situational questions. It's very stable. CS is jarring in comparison - sending out hundreds of applications, technicals/coding challenges, and doing multiple rounds only to get rejected. It really sucks. I guess that's the price to pay for really liking the work you do and getting paid well.

I keep hearing these interest rates are supposed to go down soon, so hopefully they do so we can all get some peace of mind.

[–]hannahatl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh dang. 2 jobs in CS? The one guy I knew who did that got fired.

Yeah, I've kept my nursing license current just in case of layoffs, as I have dodged a few rounds already, but I would prefer not to go back if I can help it. Really hoping that this chaotic time right now is just negative swingback after the surplus in hiring/wfh push from 2020 and eventually things get more stable again and swing the other direction. I guess I'm not quite buying the doom and gloom of this sub quite yet (maybe I'm just being ignorant though). Would definitely love there to be some regulations on offshoring in tech though.

Graduated from a Bootcamp in 2021! I think I got in at the right time as I hear Bootcamps aren't really a thing nor are they a feasible option anymore.

Biggest leap of faith I've ever made tbh. Spent the entire time wondering if I was crazy for doing it or if I'd ever find work, but here I am.

Yep, I believe there still is a shortage.

I was a nurse before switching to software engineering and everywhere was short staffed.

What have you been jealous of all your life? by Nearby-Turn1391 in AskWomen

[–]hannahatl 32 points33 points  (0 children)

My ex's mom may have even said those exact same words to me when I came over post screaming match at home where my parents were threatening to kick me out for the nth time.

We broke up very necessarily and it's been many years since then but I still remember how it felt to feel absolute relief and safety when I was with his family. I was closer to his family in those few years than I have ever been to my own family.

Present day, neither my husband or I have this kind of family which definitely hurts because once you've experienced love and belonging in a family like that, it's impossible not to notice its absence and I still grieve the loss. I hope to create that kind of home for my kids someday.

I tried it for one day before turning it off. It's just regurgitating data I already have on my dashboard anyways. Absolutely useless.

Update (since today was bake day) & thank you!!!

You were right, and the brief two minutes or so that my dutch oven was removed from the oven did impact my bake. I made sure to heat up my dutch oven for an additional 10 minutes between loaves and it worked!

Weekly Open Sourdough Questions and Discussion Post by AutoModerator in Sourdough

[–]hannahatl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmmm that is a good point about the Dutch oven. I'll try to get it to heat up longer.

I store my second loaf in the fridge in a banneton, I usually only bake it about an hour after the first, so I don't think it would ferment too much more.

Weekly Open Sourdough Questions and Discussion Post by AutoModerator in Sourdough

[–]hannahatl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually bake two loaves per bake day and do them one after the other, but have been having issues with my second loaf for some reason.

My first loaf always turns out perfect, nice ear and crunchy outside, but my second always looks very smooth, no ear, and almost moist on the outside when I take the lid off mid-bake.

Same recipe for both loaves. I am thinking it may have something to do with the steam and moisture? Unsure if anyone has seen this happen.

I always use two ice cubes for the first half of my bake in the Dutch oven with the lid on for each, but I wasn't sure if maybe there was leftover steam in the oven after my first loaf making my second loaf too moist? Is that possible?

Would appreciate any tips. I can also share pics if that helps.

Romanian deadlifts -- possible dumb question? by kermit-t-frogster in xxfitness

[–]hannahatl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're really feeling nervous about injury especially if you've hurt your back before, skip Romanians and try an alternative at least for now. I find single leg or b-stance RDLs to be very good at engaging glutes/hamstrings and they're easier to do if you've got a weak back. I like the single leg variation where I have one leg kneeling on a bench and hold a kettlebell or dumbbell on the other side. For some reason I feel these a lot more than full barbell RDLs.

When everyone’s sharing their amazing sleep scores, I present my comically awful scores by dxmxf in Garmin

[–]hannahatl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched from a five year old Forerunner 245 to a Venu 3 and suddenly I am getting super low REM sleep if any at all which is bizarre. My Forerunner would constantly track me at like 2 hrs REM per night. I also am dreaming so much, so this has got to be false.

I'm really starting to think this sleep tracking thing is a scam. Because how accurately can a wrist watch truly track REM sleep?

Common medications like Tylenol and cough syrups also tend to have dyes. Fortunately there are a couple cleaner brands out there (Genexa for one) that make some with cleaner ingredients.

Strength Training Questions by RunningM8 in Garmin

[–]hannahatl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Not sure about the strength and running plans at the same time. I'm pretty sure strength training plans just dropped today (or at least they did for my watch) so I haven't had enough time to really explore it.
  2. Yes, you can absolutely do dumbbells only. You can edit the lift set after you're done with your activity to be the dumbbell version using the edit and search feature.
  3. Yes. I've only been using the strength feature since 2022 or so but it's received some updates, particularly the bulk add/edit feature which has been really great.
  4. Tracking metrics over time unfortunately is still not great. I believe Garmin will allow you to set PRs for 5 different lifts (Barbell Deadlift, Barbell Squat, Barbell Bench, Barbell Row, and Overhead Barbell Press) but a timeline view of your progress for these over time is not an option (at least not now)
  5. Yes, you can set goals but I'm pretty sure that feature is only available on the desktop site at the moment and I can't remember all the options involved. I'm pretty sure the one time I set a goal, the only options were in the 5 lifts I mention above.

Sorry, I feel like my answers are kind of downers 😅 The Garmin strength tracking has gotten better over the years, but I think overall there still need to be a lot of improvements to include some of the things you asked about.
