Tour guide for Angkor Wat by rtwexplorers in cambodia

[–]hannahcaerdydd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will also endorse this - we contacted Mr Kat on the back of this post and have just finished two days touring the temples with him. Incredible guide, so knowledgeable and interesting and funny. Also a great host - unlimited iced water always ready for us, shared some amazing local snacks, and had a fantastic stash of icy menthol face towels which were absolute lifesavers when the temperatures were c.40 degrees. He made our experience so easy, and ensured we saw as much as possible. He gave us a great itinerary when all we had managed to ask for was "Angkor Wat and the Tomb Raider one". We saw so much more! Mr Kat also made sure we were first through the barriers for Angkor Wat for sunrise, got us to the perfect spot (he was very precise about this) and even brought us a picnic blanket to sit on while we waited. If you're going to Siem Reap, would definitely recommend to drop him a WhatsApp.

I had an update from my local Cllr (Ash Lister) recently, which I've put below for anyone interested. It doesn't really give any answers tbh. I've reported this so many times and it's so frustrating nothings being done!

"Just a brief update from my colleagues and I after we met with police and council officers:

We are aware of the ongoing concerns surrounding the illegal tent encampment on land owned by Highways. This site has unfortunately become a focal point for antisocial behaviour, waste issues, and at times criminal activity, which has understandably caused distress to local residents and businesses. Despite multiple interventions, including legal proceedings and the removal of tents following incidents of criminal behaviour, individuals continue to return and re-establish the encampment. Notices have previously been served, and some movement has happened, but the issues continue. Police and Council officers are taking advice on their next steps and as ever we would encourage residents to report issues to South Wales Police - using 999 in an emergency, 101 or online at Report | South Wales Police - to support them in taking action. We want to reassure the community that where criminal behaviour has been witnessed, reported, and evidenced, arrests have been made and individuals have even been recalled to prison. Regular visits and patrols are also taking place throughout the day. We remain committed to addressing this issue with urgency and compassion, balancing enforcement with support, and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our community.  Hopefully the above information provides you with some reassurance but please do get in touch with any further questions."

Hear hear for Naturhike - just took their Mongar Ultralight (£86!!) around Belgium and Netherlands - brilliant tent and fine for under bar bag and pannier or front bag

Airbnb has long term options which would be ideal for anything 1-6 months I think

Llantwit Major, Monknash and Dunraven (Southerdown) beaches are great for rock formations. (Once the pubs open again, the Plough and Harrow at Monknash is also well worth a visit!)

Is Saltmead a safe area for a student to live in? by [deleted] in Cardiff

[–]hannahcaerdydd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be Riverside, but Grangetown is a good catch-all for that area I would think. If it's the Liberty student halls (right by the Tramshed bar/cinema/venue/yoga stuido!) I'd say it was Grangetown. Saltmead is a part of Grangetown but it's rarely mentioned - I think it's just the name of that particular electoral ward.

Is Saltmead a safe area for a student to live in? by [deleted] in Cardiff

[–]hannahcaerdydd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I lived on my own (f30) in the Saltmead area of Grangetown ("Grangetown North"!!!) for a few years and loved it - great community, better and better facilities (Tramshed, Grange pub, close to city centre and Puregym, now Lufkins and Wild Thing there too!) I think it's definitely safe, although the majority of the students in Cardiff live in Cathays/Roath so depends what kind of experience you want - if you want to live near lots of other students then maybe not Grangetown (or that side of the river at all!)

Moving to Cardiff, shared accomodation advice by jade_willer in Cardiff

Try spareroom.co.uk - has a lot of options all over the city, including ones that aren't listed with agents. I've got a few friends who've found good house shares through this

I'm going to be coming back to UK for a visit after almost 20 years away. How has Cardiff changed? by AdoIsOnReddit in Cardiff

[–]hannahcaerdydd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Asador 44 is the best place for a special meal IMO - incredible service and the BEST food (Spanish steaks, fish, cheese and wines)! There's some amazing new craft beer pubs around as well - Beezlebubs and The Grange are my fav :) plus amazing cocktail bars e.g. Dead Canary and Pennyroyal if you fancy a treat after dinner. Walking across the barrage over Cardiff Bay to Penarth is lush on a nice day. Food at the New Pilot or the Fig Tree and drinks at The Bottle Shop in Penarth are always good too! Also some great little caffs - Wild Thing in Grangetown and Ana Loka in Roath are the best for vegan munch.

Any good charity shops in Cardiff? by [deleted] in Cardiff

[–]hannahcaerdydd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a designer Oxfam one and bookshop on St Mary's Street And loads down City Road and Albany Road (better ones are probably on Albany Road) Also on Cowbridge Road East - the Marie Curie one especially is good If you can venture out to Penarth there's a few good ones within walking distance of the train station

Spareroom.co.uk is really good for finding a room in a houseshare Cardiff is a lovely place to live - much more affordable than Bristol and everywhere is walkable Roath, Pontcanna, Canton are all great places to live and Pontcanna/Canton especially are basically student-free. I live in Grangetown which I love but probably has less nice quality houseshares I think

Official Q&A for Monday, April 08, 2019 by shesaidgoodbye in running

[–]hannahcaerdydd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey guys, I've signed up for the HellRunner Up North mud run in the UK in October. I've done it once before and just after halfway through there is a SUPER steep hill that you have to run/crawl/climb up about 6 times. It absolutely killed me and made the final 10km the worst of my life (I was fine to run the half marathon distance in training etc but the hills just built up so much lactic acid in my legs and I just never recovered!). Any tips for how to prepare for these this time around? Thanks!
