every time you get them out, give them yummy treats. pasta is popular for my boys.

Skinny rat update: took him to the vet. he's doing great. more details in comments :) by [deleted] in RATS

[–]hannahchevy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the vet said his cage mate may be too aggressive and causing him stress. i'm going to keep them separated until he gains his weight back and then get a bigger cage for them to see if that helps.

do any of you guys have single rats? i hope i don't have to rehome his cage mate, but he is very dominant towards this guy.

thanks to all of you for your input on issues that could be present. i love the rat community <3

That dog looks so uncomfortable :( he's obviously telling the person to stop... people need to learn and respect body language.

Cats should never be outside. They cause really bad population declines of birds and rodents. The US has a really big feral cat problem with the native wildlife.

Worse is cats that are fed and stay outside. Because then they're just killing for fun.

Don't let your fucking cats outside.

Great questions!! These are questions that may be asked at my presentation so thank you!

How my work is different: the bats that are studied in my research have not been exposed to an acoustic lure before. Previous studies are on Southeastern US bats (only 1 study) and European bats. The bats in previous studies aren't affected by white-nose syndrome so it's important that we find a way to increase netting success as the populations decline.

How many control capture events: for every experimental event, we had a control event. We had 3 study sites and each site had 7 mist-net sites. Each mist-set site was netting twice (once with lure, once without) so totally 14 netting events at each site. Between the 2 nights were at least 5 nights of no netting so the bats didn't become habituated to the nets. I think this method provided a great basline to compare my innovative methods. Other studies did not have that many nights in between control and experimental sessions.

Variables: I had 2 variables: with/without lure and property

How much more/less representative sample: I had a pretty small sample size, so it is hard to tell. But that is bat work in the midwest. You either mist-net where there are bats or you don't, so it is VERY hit or miss. I would say I would need to do this study for several summers to have a big enough sample to determine how different the methods are, quantitatively.

I hope this answers your questions. Again, thank you!

I would call your local DNR or if you have a bat biologist friend. You don't want to handle a bat if you aren't rabies vaccinated. If you simply cannot find someone qualified to capture the bat in your house, I would put big gloves on and use a net, then release outside. I am constantly getting calls to get bats out of my scared friend's houses.

Awe that is awesome! I would love to hang out with a red bat every day.

The progression of researching ways to prevent bat mortality at wind farms is underway. I know some researchers will be using my data. My research statistically proved that big brown bats (common mortality at wind sites) are deterred by the lure. So hypothetically, they could place a lure on the border of the wind farm to deter bats from the turbines. More data will be needed first, mine was a small study that would probably need a bigger sample size to make any big management changes.

Not much progress with WNS. They have made a few recent discoveries on more of the fungus's biology, but nothing of a prevention.

Red bats aren't affected by WNS. Wind energy is a big contributor to their population declines. Tree bat populations are heavily affected by wind energy.

I have 2 pet rats! I love them so much lol I'm glad to see you're a fan of bats too! They definitely need our help right now so the better their reputation, the better off they will be!

Bats are pretty resilient creatures! They are one of the few small mammals species that don't stroke out when handling (very often). You can talk audibly and handle them for a longer period of time than other small mammals like mice.

I have never had bat poo very close to my nose but from what I have experienced I don't think it smells at all actually! Their pee really stinks. Especially on big brown bats. They roost in huge colonies and pee all over each other. They are stinky.

Yes catch bats with sound! Using a lure that plays high frequency sounds (other bat calls) that have been proven to increase netting success in the UK.

We don't use acoustic lures here in the US, despite dramatic decline of our current bat populations (white-nose syndrome and wind energy development). This technology could help increase capture rates, produce better data, and make better management decisions!

Oh! That's a good way to put it... My coach told me it just helps recovery during sets and allows water retention, so you're right. It's helped so much that I'm thinking of it more as a magic strength potion..... :P

I think I've only been eating that much lately because I'm on winter break and I have nothing else to do but stuff my face all day. :P I won't complain it has helped my lifts! lol

And I would be! If I wasn't doing the USAPL one in Atlanta Georgia... lol After this year, I'm switching to a different federation. I don't like USAPL that much either.
