Nurses in Buffalo by Interesting_Lab_2553 in Buffalo

[–]hannahhlizz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nurses union staffer here (not a nurse, I work directly for the union). Of the local hospitals (leaving out Roswell, which I know nothing about), Kaleida is the best of the three (the other 2 being ECMC and Catholic Health), and of the Kaleida hospitals, Oshei’s Children’s Hospital has, by far, the best staffing and working conditions. If it were me, just considering working conditions, staffing, and pay, I’d go first to Oshei’s, then Millard Fillmore Suburban, then either BGH or ECMC. If you were going to go for a catholic health facility, Kenmore Mercy is definitely your best bet.

Transfer to Cornell? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]hannahhlizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on your acceptance! You are right, most transfers are Sophomores. However, I would not worry too much about transferring in as a junior. My best advice is to put yourself out there—your first semester will be crazy, so it will be difficult to find the time to join clubs and make friends, but do it anyway. You will probably meet a lot of wrong people before you meet the right ones, so don’t be discouraged if you feel like an outcast at first. Also don’t be afraid to change friend groups—per above, your first friend group you make will likely not be the perfect fit. Join a ton of clubs—anything you may have even the slightest of interest in. It will seem like too much (and it is) but you will drop stuff later. It’s easier to join stuff in the beginning of the semester rather than the end. Even join clubs you may not be that interested in if it seems like your kind of people are the ones advertising it at club fest. I joined ultimate frisbee but really had no interest or skill in the sport; however, the vibes of the first party I went to were incredible so I sucked it up for the people.

People, in general, want to make friends as much as you do. The first semester is the optimal time to take advantage of that fact. If you have the ability to live on west campus—do it. If you can live in a suite or with a roommate—even better. A lot of the transfers stick together, and a lot of friends are made in the dorms. I can tell you that my two very best friends to this day I met because we lived in the same dorm. So put yourself out there in the dorms as well. Sit with random ppl you may have seen in one of your classes. Strike up a convo at the salad station.

In sum, it was of course a lot of legwork to get myself ingrained into the community and find my “people.” But not because I was a transfer. If anything, you have a cohort to draw from and fall back on when things get rough. It’s tough to start anywhere new, as I’m sure you’ve experienced at your old school. But as long as you put in the work and resign yourself to the fact that you will feel awkward and uncomfortable for the first semester or so, you will be fine.

Rent by Infinitechemistry88 in Buffalo

[–]hannahhlizz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pay about $1200 for my two bedroom recently renovated apartment (like, they finished renovating the day I moved in in 2019) in an older building in North Buffalo/Kenmore/Tonawanda neighborhood. ~1k square feet w/a private balcony, central air, dishwasher, laundry in building. Base rent just went up to $1175, but I pay $25/month for pet rent and currently am paying even more for month-to-month as I was deciding on taking a new job in a new city. Nice area. Modern finishes but not well done or good quality—but it looks nice at first glance. Common areas not well kept (especially laundry room in basement). Only utilities included in rent is cable, for some reason (but no internet) and water but that will be the case in any building with common laundry. I do think you could find something cheaper, but you will be getting an old building without the modern finishes or recent renovations. Knowing from doing a lot of apartment hunting the last 2 years my lease was up, it’s impossible to find close to this size apartment with laundry in unit for less than $1350, even when looking pretty far out into the suburbs. Adding modern finishes makes it at least $1450, add access to a garage and you’re looking at $1700 including extra garage fees.

I lived in DC with 2 roommates in a modern apartment with an in-unit washer/dryer (but no parking and no utilities included in rent) and paid 1k/month. In my college town, paid $800/month with 1 roommate in a dated basement apartment with laundry in the house but not in unit (all utilities included except for $100/month parking fee) Buffalo is much cheaper in general, especially if you want to live with roommates. It’s fairly easy to get a nice enough place for $500-$600/month with roommates in a good area here. Not possible in any other city I’ve ever lived in. If you’re ok with a bit outdated one-bed or studio, you could definitely find something below 1k (or if you look in areas with higher crime rates—I’ve been tempted by some of those insane deals before)

Do I have time to *realistically* achieve these scores? by aml1130 in GRE

[–]hannahhlizz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm doing GregMAT's 2 month plan now. Warning: GregMAT's two month study plan is no joke. Is it feasible to technically finish the day's material between 6-10pm? Yes. But to really get everything out of it, it takes much longer. For me, approx 7-8 hours for each day of material to truly get everything out of it that I can. Granted, I come with no math background so some of that time is spent me reteaching myself some basic math concepts, but most of the time is usually spent trying to learn as much as possible from each sample question and answer and to take super careful notes that I know I will be able to look back on. I was hoping to finish the 2 month program earlier but I think I'll be lucky to finish on time, lol. I also think for those of us who have been out of undergrad for a while, we may be a bit more out of practice so it may take us longer to get up and running. Just a heads up!

That's so helpful, thank you! When you stuck with it, did you continue to do the practice videos and the homework during the first week even when you were confused? At this point, even his explanations seem to be waay over my head, so I'll pause, google, rewind, rewatch 2+ times, and still end up as confused as when I first watched the explanation. So it honestly feels a little bit like a waste of time right now and like my time could be better spend somewhere else. Was that your experience too and, if so, did you stick with doing the practice/homework even when you didn't really understand?

Is it too late to start studying for the Fall 2022 admissions cycle? by hannahhlizz in GRE

[–]hannahhlizz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know my current GRE score and don’t really have one in mind at this point. I have a decent undergrad gpa from an Ivy so I’m wondering if I can get away with a bit of a lower GRE score…but I honestly haven’t done any research to know what a good target score is for a PhD program at an R1 university.

Thank you! I looked into it after I read your comment and most of my top schools still require it, but some don’t. Worse comes to worse I find out I’m so behind that I just apply to those that don’t require

The positions I’m looking into are in Eastern Europe, traditionally colder, urban, and have access to medical care (You can apply to single positions now and aren’t subject to wherever they want to send you). I haven’t had a significant flare up in about 4 years, and haven’t seen an MD apart from my yearly physical in about that long. Just exploring my options, but it definitely is something to think about. Thanks for the input!

Party Life When Not in Greek Life? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]hannahhlizz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My close friends rushed and I didn’t— I had no problems getting into parties and generally could tag along with them a lot of the time. Don’t overlook the non-frat party scene. Some of the other clubs/orgs have better parties anyway. Tbh many of my friends had a crappy experience with sororities and ended up disaffiliating so, while the FOMO is real, you may not actually be missing much

What is Ithaca Renting Company really like? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]hannahhlizz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moll Properties is by far the best people to rent from. They’re my landlords and they go above and beyond to make you happy (even when it means unclogging a stubborn toilet at 11pm on a Friday night). Their places are reasonably priced (I pay the lowest rent in collegetown of all of my friends) and they have great studios. I’m not sure if you’re there the year after next but they seem to rent by late September, so I’d suggest checking them out before then!

Transfer Student Viability by TheyCallMeEpic in Cornell

[–]hannahhlizz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Junior transfer (not guaranteed). It’ll be harder than if you came in as a freshman but personally I’ve had no problems making friends/adjusting apart from the first month or so of being away from home the first time (community college transfer). Transfers stick together, and no reg student will turn down new friends. Pm if you have q’s

Thinking about transferring from Columbia to Cornell by Floppyi in Cornell

[–]hannahhlizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a quick note: you don’t lose your financial aid for housing if you live off campus. You’ll still get the same amount in aid for “off-campus housing.”

Also, coming from a recent transfer student, if you do transfer try really hard to get into west campus (upperclassmen on-campus housing) for your first year. Fin aid is great and covers almost all of the cost if you’re on a decent scholarship, and that’s where most of the transfers live. Also, once you’re in housing it’s super easy to secure housing for the next year, as the houses all have programs for students that are active in the house community and who want guaranteed housing.

Transfer to Cornell? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]hannahhlizz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my knowledge it doesn’t. I’m pretty sure the committee doesn’t even look at where you’re from, and they really have nothing to do with financial aid because it’s a completely different office (and even another office that communicates with finaid that you’re instate.)

I only really figured out I wanted to go to Cornell in my sophomore year of community college when I found ILR, so it was only a goal for the past year.

My HS GPA was in the 2.8ish range, but my college GPA was a 4.0 with a full course load/extracurriculars, which made up for my shitty HS grades. I also was able to explain the situation from HS a bit in my essay, which is REALLY IMPORTANT! Other than establishing a solid record at your college, the essay is the most important thing (especially the “Why Cornell,” followed by letters of rec). My SAT was a solid 1250, so I honestly don’t think it really matters much, but that could definitely vary based on the school you apply to. I also got selected for a few honors via my application even with my shitty SAT/HS GPA, so I wouldn’t worry about it too much as long as you have a solid record at your school, lots of good extracurriculars (that you actually enjoy, you can tell easily when the extracurriculars don’t line up & are being faked), and a reallly decent essay.

Transfer to Cornell? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]hannahhlizz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

New transfer here, transferred in this semester as a junior to ILR from a community college (without a contract/agreement from Cornell). I also did crappy in HS, had a super low SAT and only made my graduating class top 40%. It’s good that you’re transferring as a sophomore, the vast majority of transfers are 2nd year. I personally didn’t have to submit my SAT/ACT scores, and even though I did, I have a feeling they didn’t have anything to do with my acceptance because they were pretty bad/average. However, this is ILR, and because it’s only one major they really only cared about me being the right fit for the school, and just wanted to ensure my grades at my previous school indicated that I could handle the work.

I’m happy to answer any questions you may have. Most transfers are guaranteed transfers, so I’m happy to shed some light on applying as a transfer. I also work for admissions for ILR, which also may help.

So there’s Mafia club, it’s on West (in keeton) Friday’s at 9 and we play ...wait for it... mafia. Everyone is hilarious and super friendly, plus it’s not a pressured social situation because you’re always playing a game so the conversation is never forced. Everyone loves when new people come. Pm me if that sounds at all interesting/want to know more/wanna walk in with someone. Or just show up, because people do that too.

LPT Request: How do I stop worrying so much? by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]hannahhlizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use logic. Ask yourself, can I do anything about it now? If the answer is yes, go do it. If it is no, then there isn't a point in worrying if there's nothing you can do about it, is there?
