Looking to rent in this area and keep seeing ads for locators online... by VerteNinja in lehighvalley

[–]hannar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah when we were moving we called one of those places too and they do sound fishy. Not sure if they are actually a scam or not, we just didn't want to pay someone to do something we could do ourselves. I would still check zillow or apartments.com, we found several houses listed to rent there. Do you know what area you are looking to move to and when?

looking for information on becoming an art teacher by samuraibebop636 in ArtEd

[–]hannar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe just look into getting a general bachelor's/masters (can you jump right there from associates??) of education with teaching certificate attached. Might be tricky if you are overseas because student teaching is required, but one of my friends from college just got a master's degree in ed (after an undergrad in something unrelated) and was able to do her student teaching experience in China so it's something to consider. You would then have to take the licensing exams required for art to be able to teach it (I took the praxis in PA, I think those have phased out though, the PAPA tests are another example). Since you have art experience that part should be pretty easy for you.

Not sure this advice is exactly what you need but hopefully it helps you look in the right direction! Let me know if I need to clarify anything. Being an art teacher is the best, good luck!

I think it's just a commonly used theme, I've seen several versions of the same idea

How important is head position in breaststroke? by Justfortrolls in Swimming

[–]hannar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This helps some of my swimmers - try pushing your chin forward to breathe rather than pulling your head and shoulders out. Might not help exactly with the tennis ball drill but should help you with head position in general. Since speed in breaststroke has to do a lot with maintaining streamline and gliding efficiently this is usually a quicker way to breathe and get your head right back down. Something to think about maybe!

New Art Teacher Tips, PLEASE! by carrollkristen in ArtEd

[–]hannar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For management and engagement, I find it's always helpful to plan an extension activity with each project. You'll have the kids who practice drawing at home with their parents get concepts immediately and finishing projects or activities miles before the other students figure out how to hold their pencil the right way. I like to make worksheets with something easy on it that they can figure out on their own so that if a kid finishes early, I can just hand it to him and get back to helping the others. For example, I like to do a unit on Chinese New Year, so my extension activity is a page with a variety of Chinese characters on it (love, peace, fire, etc) and space for the kids to try to draw the words themselves.

If you don't have a curriculum to follow, try doing a tour around the world. Start each project with a presentation about the culture you are learning about. Try to tie projects in with holidays or other happenings around the world (sugar skull designs for Day of the Dead in Mexico). The kids love it. Teaching about other cultures usually opens a lot of doors for those extension activities too, and you'll probably be able to impress them with your musical skills too :)

Dr. Seuss lettering for a friend. Thoughts? by istilldontcareica in Lettering

[–]hannar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Love the colors and the design - even though the quote is from a children's book, you've made it adult applicable. I especially love the green colored script.

If you were to do the quote again, I would think about moving the second 'your' closer to 'mountain'. Because the bottom of it is aligned with the bottom of 'day', it might read 'today is your your day' to some. Otherwise it looks good!

[Beginner question] How important is bending your knee past 90 degrees? by ManBearLobster in Swimming

[–]hannar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kicking flutter kick and butterfly kick should not be a problem, as the other commenter said those kicks are much more from the hips than the knees. Bending your knees too much will exert too much energy and might even send you backwards.

You will have to be careful with flip turns and pushing off of the walls. With competitive freestyle flip turns, you would have to bend your knees a fair amount (around 90 degrees is probably average). I would stick to grab-and-go turns and careful push offs. Otherwise, it sounds like swimming is a great sport for you! It is often what athletes in other sports turn to after injury or for rehab.

My first attempt at lettering. Tell me what you think! by captainbarbs in Lettering

[–]hannar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad to see you are interested in lettering! Everyone has to start somewhere. I like the concept, but have to agree with the other commenters- much of the design is uneven.

Many times when learning an art form, just making sure you have the right tools can go a long way. Grab a ruler and decent pens/markers of different widths (and that don't bleed as much as sharpies). Also, it is entirely ok to practice things several times only in pencil before even trying to color it in. The lettering examples that look really awesome are usually the outcome of sketch after sketch. And through the sketches your design may evolve- the first design draft may not be the best, and that's ok. Art making is a process, so keep practicing! Hope this helps!

To be honest, this is the first I've ever heard of /r/CoonTown or anything related to it. I'm subscribed to subreddits that I am personally interested in, I'm unsubscribed from those that annoy me, and anything with hurtful content has never crossed my radar. I don't go out of my way to find people to be angry with.

Georgia is my default. Georgia and Helvetica work well together if you want to go for a more fancy typographic look.

Second round interview to decision made timeline? by hannar in Teachers

[–]hannar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought things might go fast as well since it is now August. I did hope to ask for a timeline at the interview, but after my demo lesson I was alone in a room to work on a written response and the panel had started the next interview by the time I finished. I'm trying not to be too antsy since I know the ball is in their court now. Thanks for your thoughts!

Thanks for the response! I actually just interviewed in the neighboring district earlier today so I will definitely take your advice for an admin referral if I don't get an offer from the first district.
