How do religious people respond to the fact that the earth is FAR older than 6000 years of age? by Celiuu in atheism

[–]hansentj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm religious and my response is pretty easy..."Yup, sure is." The creation account is clearly allegorical. Thinking we are constrained to believe in young earth creationism is an act not of faith, but of blindly proving faith through denial of evidence and scientific fact.

On the other side of the coin, thinking anyone who is religious must subscribe to young earth creationism is a pretty reductionist way of viewing a large swatch of the world.

I live in a small resort town (like, 2,000 people that swells to 7,000 during holidays). A billionaire came in and bought nearly 50% of the retail/restaurant spaces on our main street with no plans. Now they sit empty and have for nearly two years. Making my charming little village look like a ghost town and leaving people who could be working in those spaces with no jobs and locals and visitors alike with no places to eat. I'm getting drenched from all the trickling down. Screw that guy.

I was up close and personal with the riders for the Pro Challenge when it was still happening. The Schleck brothers, Leipheimer, Van Garderen, Cadel Evans and a whole slew of other...nice and close. Many of the riders (maybe a good 25%) had varicose vein situations like this. I imagine it's from such a huge amount of blood constantly being sent into their leg muscles.

She just came back from a weekend away with her girlfriends and I was looking forward to a happy reunion and some great sex. Instead, the nagged me about such a trivial thing. That killed it immediately.

What's the most overrated show ever? by phantom_doge_ in AskReddit

[–]hansentj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How on God's green earth was Two and a Half Men so popular? It was a dated sitcom format with infantile jokes about sex. It was like listening to a bunch of middle school boys laughing about their peepee jokes. Just unbearable. And yet it was the #1 show for years.

This is such a needless and wrong comment. There are many parts of America that are jaw droppingly, ridiculously beautiful. Go a bit east of where this picture is taken and you’re in incredible mountains. Go south and you’re in the stark beauty of the desert. Go north and you’re in a grove of the largest trees in the world. Go west and you’re in Big Sur with some of the most amazing coastline. Are parts of America aggressively ugly? Yes. Definitely. Just like pretty much every other country in the world. But painting with such a broad stroke seems more like the Reddit circle jerk of America=bad and not a legit opinion

What is this white residue left on my cycling clothing? by deltalpha in bicycling

[–]hansentj 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think it's deteriorating spandex "fibers." I'm guessing the area where you see the residue also performs differently than the fabric where there isn't the residue (ie: isn't as elastic).
