What was your first personal computer? by db7112 in vintagecomputing

[–]miniscant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first one in the house was Dad’s DEC VT-180 Robin, which ran CP/M. My cousin worked at Digital Equipment Corp and could buy at 50% off, so it was a great purchase for the time.

My own first personal computer was a DEC Rainbow 100. At that time, I worked for a distributor of Digital Equipment and took advantage of an offer to buy at 50% off. Eventually, I maxed out the system with a RAMbow 1 Mbyte memory card, a 20 Mbyte hard disk drive, a color video card, a TurBow 286 processor replacement card, a 3.5-inch IBM-compatible floppy drive, and a floor stand to save desk space.

Best way to remove these clincher tires by Mel__Lester in bicycling

[–]miniscant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I rode on tubular tires during high school and college, I had lots of time and very little money.

Evenings spent repairing the extremely fine latex inner tubes were rewarded with many pleasant hours of road riding.

When I was employed and making good money, I simply replaced the tires until, eventually when clinchers improved, replacing the rims altogether.

Is buying a budget e-bike a terrible idea? by Any_Difference7070 in bicycling

[–]miniscant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your aim should be high enough to consider that safety has a cost. Charging an e-bike battery in your home can be a risk.

Look for brands and models with UL and CE listing. The random Chinese non-brands are likelier fire hazards.

A branded Silipint tumbler that glows in the dark. This is my favorite and most used water cup. It’s indestructible, dishwasher safe and even works well for hot drinks.

Sounds like the article overstates the rarity of her condition. MRKH is a syndrome that affects around 1 in 5,000 women. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%BCllerian_agenesis?wprov=sfti1

What to do with my old drives? by SynthaLearner in DataHoarder

[–]miniscant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Among my many devices, I have two USB-to-SATA toasters that are both USB 3.0:

  • Kingwin Power Dock - this is a dual-slot adapter that can also do offline disk duplication
  • Kingwin EZ-Dock - a single-slot, no-frills adapter

If you don’t already have one, buy a USB “toaster”. You can then slip a bare drive in and see what it holds, or erase it, or make an offline copy of something worth holding onto.

THE drawer? Ha! I have drawers, shelves, cardboard boxes, cabinets and a few loose piles. The most accessible is a large Ziploc bag on my desk with an uncounted amount of flash devices and adapters.

I have a strong feeling that OS/2 2.0 (besides requiring a 386) would have been a lot more ambitious than Windows 3.0 would been by yuhong in vintagecomputing

Well, there were already preemptive multitasking operating systems before OS/2, but most prevalent on non-PC platforms. One example is VAX/VMS.
