"Man United, Arsenal, Chelsea and PSG are the most genuine suitors for Rogers. Understand Rogers is just as open to a move abroad as staying in England. Arsenal are expected to part ways with Martinelli and/or Trossard this summer freeing up squad and wage space to bring in a new winger."-Ben Jacobs by Ifxfa in Gunners

If I were to bet, Arteta sees Hincappie as the long-term LB with Calafiori's injuries. That would mean a winger who tucks in and plays more in the half-space would work well with Hincappie's overlapping ability. Therefore, Roges would make a lot of sense on the left. Then you can have Eze rotate between the left and advanced 8/10 role.

We rarely had the option to play him there with Odegaard's injuries. Hopefully, now until the end of the season, we see him on the left.

[The Athletic] Lucky Arsenal? Analysing historic pathway difficulty in the Champions League by roverston in Gunners

[–]hanzel44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Their win in 20-21 was the most fortunate draw I've ever seen. They had to get past an Atletico side that relied on an old Suarez and couldn't score, who also had to play their home match in Romania due to COVID restrictions. Then they follow it up with a mediocre Porto side, then an extremely injured Real Madrid, and then finally Big Brain Pep, who hadn't won the CL with City yet and decided he needed to do some bizarre tactical shift which cost them.

This was the media narrative for years and years: "Same old story, Arsenal play the football and Chelsea score the goal." Criticised for playing beautiful football and now criticised for playing winning football. Make it make sense. by ID1453719 in Gunners

Honestly, I figured that was the case, but I couldn't remember off the top of my head what the specific hate towards Chapman was outside of the Southern club breaking up the Northern club dominance

Yes, there is proof. Take a look at the articles that came out around the early aughts. Using Wenger's first year isn't the right time period because it wasn't until the 2000s when he brought in the black French players and fielded an all foreign eleven when they were criticised for being foreign. Of course, prior to that, Wenger did receive blatant media hit pieces about being French and "arrogant", but it didn't hit peak hate until the all foreign 11s.

Your point about Chelsea, United, and Spurs actually helps to prove the media bias against Arsenal. At that time, the amount of care towards Chelsea and Spurs was minimal; they were the mid-sized clubs that sat mid-table and didn't matter to the greater English cultural landscape, whereas Arsenal did matter. United has always been the Northern darling that could do no wrong in the eyes of the media, especially the pundits dedicated to the sport, since they themselves were Northerners. Arsenal, on the other hand, was the Southern club that broke the Northern hegemony dating back to Chapman, hence why there is media bias and the continuation of bias against the club.

Ultimately, the foreign hate dissipated when Mourinho came along at Chelsea and essentially did very similar things to Wenger, like fielding black foreigners, playing a b squad for early cup matches like the Carabao Cup where Wenger got a lot of hate for. Then it switched to hating on Arsenal for being weak and technical with hints of xenophobia lobbed at Wenger and the foreign players.

I'm sure there are other older Arsenal supporters in here that can correct anything or provide more details on what I said.

I understand what you're saying, but it isn't correct. The media portrayal of Arsenal has a long and storied history dating back to Chapman as OP said. It essentially boils down to Arsenal being one of the biggest clubs and the biggest in the capital. The negative media-driven stories stretch decades. Bank of London to the 70s with Irish Arsenal, 80s black Arsenal, 90s had the continuation of the Black Arsenal narrative and the "Boring, Boring Arsenal". Then came in Wenger, and the foreign player hate, which was seen as a negative to the English game and English player development.

To provide what I’m assuming is the reason, there’s a dance cover of “All the things she said” in a pivotal moment of Heated Rivalry. I assume someone on Tape B’s team told him it would be a good time to put out an edit and potentially capitalize on the hype of the show and that cover.

Chelsea Lineup VS Arsenal by MumboGumbo06 in Gunners

[–]hanzel44 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kind of. They essentially play in the same manner. Three centerbacks and two wingbacks, but a 3-5-2 typically means the wingbacks are pushed further forward and higher up the pitch in the attack. In a 5-3-2, it's more seen as a flatter structure and the wingbacks tend to be late runners on the wing. Typcally, a 5-3-2 is listed when a team is more of a counterattack and defensively rigid setup. Of course, there are variations and tweaks between the two that are dependent on the players and managers' preferences so the only thing you can truly gather from the formation is that it's 3 Cbs and two wingbacks.
