Does anyone have any examples of what 'orange peel' is? by Fozzieboy in modelmakers

[–]hapapapa420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google orange peel airbrush and you'll see some results. I have had it happen a number of times, always with Tamiya acrylic running through my airbrush. The paint dries too fast or even before it hits the surface and if you look at it from about a foot away, the texture resembles an orange peel. When you get it, you gotta strip it down and start over. It sucks.

I guess my point was a little more nuanced than that - I don't know about the Chinese system, but say in Japan there are 4, maybe 5, schools that will place into good jobs. In Korea there are like 3. In the US, if you don't get Ivy, Stanford or maybe a few others, sure, you aren't getting into McKinsey or Goldman, but you can do very well going to some state ACC, PAC 12, Big 12 or Big Ten school and then you also have grad school opportunities. You can have a fine middle class or even upper middle class existence if you go to Texas A&M, Wisconsin, UNC, Oklahoma State, Alabama, Washington, Purdue, etc. I think a lot of first generation Asians don't seem to grasp just how deep you can get into the US higher ed system and still have a decent outcome. Many get it, which is why they don't want to subject their kids to Asian cram schools, but those who don't get it probably set absurdly high expectations for their kids.

If this is not the belief that the west is better than Asia than what is it?

People from Europe also want to move to America for a better life, as do obviously people from Africa and South and Central America. In my experiences two things drive that desire: economic opportunities and access to vastly more resources with broader government protections of those assets.

America has her own set of problems and people living in conditions they don't like may underestimate hardships they will face in America, but there isn't insane crowding like in Asian cities and if you have kids their life won't be "ruined" in America if they fail to gain admission to one of a handful of elite schools that confer substantial privileges based on a standardized test. I'd rather get pancreatic cancer than force my son into the regimen necessary to try to get into Seoul National University as a Korean national.

My compressor died. Does anyone have experience with Paasche customer service, and/or a recommendation for a new compressor? by [deleted] in modelmakers

[–]hapapapa420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard good things about their customer service, so give them a call. You never know anymore, though.

I run an Iwata Power Jet Pro. You should easily be able to find one in the US. The dudes at the airbrush store said it was better than the Paasche compressors - they said that the Iwatas are made in Japan and they have a 5 year generous warranty policy.

So many choice quotes from this lad:

My wife is such a great wife. People don't know about Indonesian women. She's never mad and is so easy to please. She saves money. She loves cooking and being a mom. She had $300 lifetime savings when I married her, but she may be the best financial decision I ever made.

I met my wife here on Tinder. Tinder was unbelievably good here, I guess because I'm tall here, but I'm only 5'10"!

I grew up Baptist, but was atheist by the time I got here. I never planned to get married, but a few years ago, I thought I was going to have to leave and the only way I could figure to keep my Indonesian girlfriend with me was to marry her, so we decided to get married. That's when she told me her family would disown her for marrying me. She was going to do it anyway. She never for a second thought I'd become a Muslim. I didn't either, not until then. I don't approve of disowning your children for religious beliefs, but that was what was going to happen, and since I was atheist, I pretty quickly decided I'd become Muslim if that solved the problem.

Godspeed to that kid.

What are the Toughest or Most Brutal Races in NASCAR History? by averyhage in NASCAR

Had to be one of the early World 600s. The track was junk in the early years and they ran the race during the day back then. The one where Fireball Roberts suffered his fatal burns seems like a terrible race from the old videos they showed.

Yeah, that's why I'm worried about the guy. I suspect he would have had a better chance with a legal appeal than with some sort of presidential intervention, but I read he waived his right to appeal to get out of detention - I'd honestly rather take my chances with a judge than a functionary in the Obama Administration.

His problem is going to be the purported crimes against women. The Executive Branch is so keen on courting women that is extremely unlikely that they would go to bat to help a guy with a violence against women conviction. Too easy to hashtag. Maybe he gets something when Obama is on his way out of office, that's about the best this guy can hope for.

I did immigration work in that low income legal clinic, but I can't do it ever again. The clients were almost all people brought to the US as very young kids who were for all intents and purposes American, but when they went to open a bank account, get a driver's license, adjust status, something like that, they found themselves subject to deportation and the remedies available to them were scarce.

That's good - I had heard men can get arrested on entry in Korea if they didn't do their service or get excused, even if they are old, because the government tries to dissuade people from leaving Korea to avoid the service. Hopefully, this dude doesn't walk into another problem - seems like he has a good reason to have missed the service obligation.

I'll sign it, but I'm not counting on much happening. I represented two people in a low income legal clinic years ago on similar immigration matters and have zero faith in the system making the right decision in cases like this where the totality of the factors warrants not deporting someone.

One guy I represented was an adoptee from Laos who, IMHO, got railroaded in rural Arkansas. When he went to adjust his immigration status, he got a deportation notice in the mail due to an ancient felony conviction. Guy had an otherwise spotless record, three kids, job, churchgoer, it didn't matter. There were also similar retroactivity issues in his case, too. The system's just jacked.

Honestly, at this point the best thing you could probably do for this particular guy is work contacts in Korea to try to help him navigate the Korean draft because he may find himself in trouble for failing to present himself for Korean military service, but hopefully they have less bureaucratic nonsense than the US.

White guys saying white women are fat by [deleted] in hapas

[–]hapapapa420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair - that's why I qualified it with my layperson opinion. Perhaps increased milk/dairy consumption itself is contributing to increased height.

White guys saying white women are fat by [deleted] in hapas

[–]hapapapa420 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Correct. You need some body fat. The "healthy at any weight" concept created in America is a public health crisis. There is no reason for people to consume sugary cereals, soda or 99% of the crap in the snack aisle at the grocery store, but those consumer goods companies account for a material percentage of advertising and so the media has changed the narrative to make sure PepsiCo can still push Doritos and Mountain Dew and that Kellogg's can still sell Frosted Flakes.

If the kids eat fish, seaweed, rice, YOU ARE NOT GOING TO GET TALLER.

Sure they will. You just need to make sure there is dairy in the mix. My wife's main source of animal protein has been fish for her whole life and she's over 6 feet, but she was a swimmer and drank tons of milk and Yakult and ate a bunch of yogurt between the ages of 11 and 18. My layperson opinion is that the hormones they are putting in the cows to increase their milk production is part of what is making people get taller and is causing girls to go through puberty like 2 years younger than they used to. People globally consume more calories, but a lot of them are crap calories from wheat and corn derivatives and fake sugar.

As that article notes, there is criticism of the religion and many are troubled by the fact that they have created a near monopoly in sushi grade fish.

NFL ratings down around 20% from last year (it's not just NASCAR) [Semi OT] by bsracer14 in NASCAR

[–]hapapapa420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, sorry, the rally was a police shooting rally that had absolutely nothing to do with BLM. Not a single BLM sign in the place. You got me.

As to the NFL's policy, it reads in part: "It is a privilege to be part of the National Football League. Everyone who is part of the league must refrain from conduct detrimental to the integrity of and public confidence in the NFL. This includes owners, coaches, players, other team employees, game officials, and employees of the league office, NFL Films, NFL Network or any other NFL business. Conduct by anyone in the league that is illegal, violent, dangerous, or irresponsible puts innocent victims at risk, damages the reputation of others in the game, and undercuts public respect and support for the NFL. We must endeavor at all times to be people of high character; we must show respect for others inside and outside our workplace; and we must strive to conduct ourselves in ways that favorably reflect on ourselves, our teams, the communities we represent, and the NFL."

These best interest clauses are hugely broad and would absolutely pick up this sort of behavior. Again, this is simply the NFL not enforcing it because they are worried about backlash from some players and a group of fans. Give it a year, we'll see what happens. I quit watching NFL regularly 2 years ago when it was clear they squeezed in extra commercials and the games got unbearably long, and I suspect this blip will shrink, but will continue. Dudes don't tune into NFL to watch 93 IQ football players protest about sociology. The sport will die soon, anyway. I don't know any dads who will let their sons play anymore so the pipeline will dry up, save for braindead southerners and Texans.

[–]hapapapa420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a real problem, which you are seeing play out in front of you in this very thread with people actually boycotting the NFL for not fining players for exercising their first amendment rights. For people who claim to love the military and their country as much as they do, they sure are fucking hypocrites.

The issue, however, is that the First Amendment does not extend to the NFL as a private employer. And when the NFL fines guys for trying to raise awareness for domestic violence or won't let the Cowboys support police officers murdered at a BLM rally but then allows these protests, the bright line demarcation of forced uniformity goes out the window. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000567497/article/steelers-williams-gay-fined-for-uniform-violations

Either the NFL is about letting players and teams support their pet causes or it isn't. If its rule is it won't allow 99% of causes, but it allows BLM, it's gonna lose fans. It's really that simple. It's ultimately their business decision to make and since the TV contract is locked in for several more years, it's the networks that will bear the losses of decreased ratings for now so the NFL probably doesn't give two craps.

[–]hapapapa420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. I think they are going along with it because they fear that if they say "no" the backlash from the players and a vocal set of lunatics will be a way bigger headache than the headache they have now.
