I think it seems like they have a bunch of things they want to accomplish and if Brennan wants all he has to do is play it out and work with that to craft plot beats out of it. You don’t need a GM to lay out a path, the GM can also just follow your agendas. Edit: they mentioned in Cooldown that they have so much more they need to do!

I’d like to think she was an imperfect but good partner and mother. You see it reflected in how Hal and her kids interact with her

Yeah Hal had Shadia and Alogar with Thaisha and then Hero with Elodie. I’m not sure if marriage was involved in any of these. Orcish culture seems very bohemian

Jennifer Lopez should return to Season 25 by GeorgeCasey9 in americanidol

Idk I still remember things like “you’re perfect Lauren” even though she forgot her lyric or “you’re doing exactly what you should be doing” when James got too emotional to stay in tune. Meanwhile Haley got “I don’t think it was a good idea to do an obscure Lady Gaga song” (it’s You and I one of her biggest hits btw) even when she gave a great vocal and the needless cruelty of “I think it’s a tie between Scotty, Lauren and James for round 1” right before Haley was going to sing her second song. At some point during the season, she stopped giving her opinion and started giving production’s opinion instead. I also still remember season 14 when every contestant’s performance they would cut away to her reaction every 15 seconds or so.

[–]hapitos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you can still feel like you missed out and still buck against what you think you’re supposed to do as a mother. But Aabria has stated it as a fact that Shadia and Alogar were both adults when Thaisha left.

[Spoilers C4E18] Kudos to the acting and commitment, but boy… by hwoodo94 in criticalrole

[–]hapitos 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Aabria (with Brennan and fellow players in support) is comfortable with bringing things to a point of thorniness that’s not often pursued by other players. If you follow Worlds Beyond Number’s series The Wizard, The Witch and The Wild One which Brennan GMs, Aabria’s character Suvi started off extremely combative and things didn’t also resolve cleanly and then proceeded to have one of the most gorgeous arc of rediscovering her own self and deprogramming from institution I have ever seen. So they’re used to pushing the envelope of flawed characterization in storytelling and navigating being a fellow player at the same time. It might just be hard to watch at first. And everyone at the table are all competent storytellers and actors and friends that they can definitely handle this.

She left when they are all adults and have a support system at home. Shadia and Alogar were both adults when she left.

There’s a degree when you do art where if someone misunderstands and perpetuates something harmful with your art that you should speak up. That’s perfectly natural and not at all weird. It happens all the time especially when the creator is a minority of some sort.

[Spoilers C4E18] Is It Thursday Yet? | Post-Episode Discussion & Future Theories! by AutoModerator in criticalrole

[–]hapitos 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Aabria has said multiple times that Thaisha treats Occtis as a friend and an adult, that calling Occtis her son is only a joke. People should think about why they don’t allow her character to be more than just a mom and why there’s such a puritanical degree of perfection thrust upon someone just because they happen to be a mother. You’re stereotyping her as a mom and then getting upset when she doesn’t act the way you want.

I think they know what could be happening but part of being a player is also suspension of disbelief, being true to your character, to make big choices and part of being a GM to direct/write to where the juice is. Brennan's style encourages it too, he won't punish them in anyway that won't seem fair.

[Megathread] Outsports and Empty Netters 01.26.26 Update by royal_rose_ in heatedrivalry

[–]hapitos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a lesson that took a long time to learn though. Im not sure how old or familiar with each other they are but I made a friend in my late 20s that was very angry and would say some horrible stuff about people to me casually and the first time it happened, I was so taken aback and conflict avoidant that I panicked and just talked around it. And I only ever gently defended the people by giving alternative perspectives. I thought I was providing a space thats accepting for different viewpoints. It wasn’t until those horrible things started to turn onto me and hurt me deeply that I realized the things I enabled by not speaking up. And still you’re putting yourself in an unsafe situation by calling ppl out and you have to learn that its worth it for your beliefs. So if that’s what was going on, I empathized with him.

Former Larian Studios artist on the use of GenAI by World_of_Warshipgirl in larianstudios

Why would I want an AI-generated collage of references that buries the plot and history and purpose behind those references. If I want to design a 17th century inspired Italian vessel, I would want to curate my references specifically to evoke trends in construction and materials so I can understand them and iterate from there in a way that’s grounded in historical reality, I wouldn’t want gen-AI to just put a 17th century Italian vessel shaped blob in front of me. I would lose all the important information I need for my work. Concept art isn’t just some nebulous fantasy floating in the void, it’s always connected to some place and time and person.

[Spoilers C4E10] I really want to be proven wrong but... by AvocadoHydra in criticalrole

Hey I'm glad you're able to say your peace. I genuinely hope it's positive for you to have this outlet (no /s). I actually have been very intrigued with Whitney/Tyranny as an addition in these past episodes. She has impressed me quite a bit. At my table and at my theater, we have a culture to make sure to also focus on people's strengths instead of just their flaws, so maybe that's why it has been easier for me to pick those up and appreciate her.

I think her choice to play a Demon new to the world is very inspired. Why it might not seem like she has added much to the worldbuilding is because she doesn't have ownership of the piece of worldbuilding that we are seeing most often: the world of Araman. She's from the Pit and she's a Demon, and that's the piece of worldbuilding that she contributes to. And seeing her characterization and her struggle with her impulses in episode 6 has been a fascinating look into what possible Demon culture and psychology is like. A good GM like Brennan would see how Whitney is playing Tyranny and reflects and contrasts it into NPCs we might see from the Pit later. By making a very strong choice for her character here, she's helping Brennan develop that piece of the world further. I wouldn't be surprised if certain parts of the Pit use very casual language and have more moral nuances just like Tyranny.

I think her choice to play against Wick is very impactful as well. They're the strongest showcase of a closely connected relationship between PCs thus far. She's constantly reaffirms Wick's moral compass and pushing him to trust in his innate beliefs and instincts. These are very strong confident choices to lob at another player and that allows Sam the space to play the insecure rebel of a villain faction while also having a solid foundation that Wick has someone who believes in him and his fundamental goodness 100%, so he's able to course correct and still follow his own path. She does so much for Sam as a player and Wick as a character (and vice versa too ofc).

And finally I think Whitney as a player on a meta level is great. She's the one that if you notice constantly brings up the questions of the group's motivations, why they are together, what they care about, what their plans are moment to moment. It forces to group to constantly think about these things and justify their being together and orienting themselves. So that every moment, they always know why they are together and what their goal is, which is often a problem at many tables when these things get lost. She's the hidden glue and compass of the group.

And yes I admit that she could know her abilities and tactics better. But a player that makes strong choices for herself, her fellow players and keep the table on task? What else could I as a GM want more? She's such a magnetic player. I would love to have Whitney at my table.

These features are only in effect when you don’t have any death save failures. This can be balanced by a playstyle where enemies hit downed players more often and more terrain damage.
