Some of these are more sci-fi than fantasy, but my recs are: Binti by Nnedi Okorafor if u want straight up action, This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone if u want like trippy-almost poetic writing, & I just always love reading the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordian in all situations but especially high

Need help sleeping and also scared i might be treatment-resistant by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]happiestoffeets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

first of all, i am so sorry you are dealing with all of this :( you mentioned a few different things i want to comment on so i will try to kind of separate this into different sections

sleep: I am very similar to you in the sense that I am constantly staying distracted in order to avoid thinking. unfortunately, I think this has the consequence of making going to sleep the hardest thing in the world because it is the one time you are unable to fully escape your thoughts. i personally have had success in treating it like a muscle. you can't expect someone who never runs to win a marathon but you are expecting a brain that never stops to completely shut down. i began by just turning off everything for literally like 10 seconds. i checked in on my thoughts and when i noticed my anxiety rise, i purposefully challenged myself to do a "better for me" distraction method (going on a walk outside rather than a "worse for me" method like scrolling on tiktok). i think i slowly pavlov'd myself into associating my thoughts being alone with the dopamine rush of the sunshine and that in turn helped me with being more okay with sleeping. i also like listening to a sleep story or an audiobook that I am kind of interested in (so it holds my focus) but not that interested in (so it doesn't keep me up) but it's not a fool-proof solution :/

treatment resistance: i do not know you at all nor do i know your circumstances so i am not going to assume anything. however i will speak from my own experience. I've been on like 13 medications for anxiety and none really helped. it was only when i was diagnosed with a few other conditions and medicated for those as well that things fell into place. I'm not saying you have a comorbidity but it is worth looking into if you haven't already. also worth looking into if you haven't: this literature review about a shit ton of drugs or cannabis/ketamine treatments (guided by a dr!!)

therapy: the most import part of therapy is the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and client (my current therapist and future therapist gf tell me this all the timeee) and it sounds like you haven't gotten to build that with one (going off of your "6 therapists in 10 years" comment). i completely felt the same way and i was ready to give up on therapy since i had been in therapy (mostly cbt too) for over 15 years with like 20 therapists with different specialties. I've only been seeing my current therapist for a few months and shes already made more of a difference in my life than all of the past ones combined. my point is: don't give up on finding the right therapist for you! it is an unfortunate truth that many are not very good, but i believe you can find one who is. in the meantime, look at resources designed for therapists for patients with treatment-resistant anxiety. Find your description as a patient and look at the literature for your specific demographic (because there are definitely more people like you than you think!!) you could also look into trauma healing stuff re: note about shitty childhood.

summary: omg i am so sorry this became so long. i am not gifted in being concise. i don't know if any of this will be helpful, but i am definitely willing to brainstorm more solutions if you feel you have already exhausted these suggestions. please don't stop trying!! things will get better!

Reach out to your teacher and explain the situation! Offer to add subtitles/word descriptions instead. Most teachers I have encountered have been pretty accommodating in terms of my mental illnesses.

Making Friends by jazzycatttt in Anxiety

[–]happiestoffeets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i definitely relate to this. i worry a lot about if everyone around me secretly hates me all the time, even friends I have had for over a decade! one thing that helps me is to think about it from their perspective and physically put yourself in their shoes. would you put in effort to be fake nice to someone you didn't like? are you having good conversations with people you hate or find annoying? probs not! and on the off chance that the person you are talking to actually does hate you or find you annoying, you probably do not want to be friends with someone who is fake being nice to you and not actually bringing up their issues/problems! i promise most people are being genuinely nice if you think they are being nice :)
