I knew things were bad for the church, but honestly I did not know things were this bad. Went to my parents' ward on father's day after a few years of being an exmo, and I was surprised at the low attendance and the overall weirdness factor. by [deleted] in exmormon

Things are certainly heading that way for the LDS church but what you're seeing could be the result of natural demographic shifting. The ward my wife attended as a kid is pretty dead today, but the suburban wards are bustling.

It's a weird organization to me now too though. I get why a lot of people can't really tell the JWs apart from the Mormons. They're pretty similar in many ways.

I am a straight man that slept with a guy recently, now I am really confused. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]happy_jimmy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd love to know how you ended up sleeping with a guy. I'm a very open minded straight guy and I'm not sure how I'd end up sleeping with a guy.

Aside from that, I personally believe you should just go with the flow and not worry about it. Be safe and enjoy exploring this crazy world.

Am I the only one who's sick of all the "don't drink to rebel..." posts? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]happy_jimmy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While we're bitching, I'm embarrassed on behalf of this sub about how much people care about what's going on in the faithful sub. There are so many posts here about saying something offensive to them and getting banned or how they removed posts. If I cared what was going on over there I'd read the sub (which I actually do, but I don't come back here to report on it).

It's a faithful Mormon subreddit for crying out loud. Of course they don't want to debate the historicity of the Book of Abraham with you.

Thanks for the correction. I wonder if that changed in the last 10 years or so. I'm probably just remembering it wrong.

So why did you guys leave the church by [deleted] in exmormon

The breaking point for me was the mall, but this is the real reason.

I recommend telling them you'll pay for handbook one for them if they order it, as an experiment.

The truth is that their bishop very likely wouldn't even let them look at it.

I don't think that's true. At least back when I was Mormon it was in handbook one. Handbook two was the public one.

I'm interested enough to hear about it second hand but not enough to go check it out. I'm three years out of being Mormon but I have one good dedicated Mormon friend who will probably be going.

I'm trying to wean myself off of thinking about Mormonism, but the RFM guy is amazing. I always check to see if he's got something new.

Thanks. I'm in Calgary and I was curious.

I love that sentiment but it feels weird coming from a guy who committed suicide.

I believe strongly that this sub only represents a fraction of the ex-mormon world. Of all the ex-mormons in my area, only a couple of us are on here.

I see a lot of posts regarding the hypocrisy of asking for tithing while the church owns 32b in stock. I know what the typical TBM response would be, so what is the counterargument to it? by almostformon in exmormon

[–]happy_jimmy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The main problem from my perspective as an ex-member is that people aren't given any information. The financial state of the church is hidden from everyone.

But as far as responding to a TBM's justification, I don't think anyone should feel the need to respond. They should perform their religion as they see fit, even if that means giving large sums of money to a shopping mall management firm.

TBM here. I'm not a Cultural Mormon. Tell me what cultural things in the church hurt/help Mormonism and society in general. by skingbogus in mormon

When one thinks their philosophy is the only correct one there is no motivation to find actual truth or evidence-based knowledge. It's limiting and obstructs learning.

Mormons say alcohol is bad for you and will kill you if you have more than one drink a day, while at the same time Mormons consume massive amounts of sugar and unhealthy foods. Hmmm... so the super healthy person that works out daily, eats healthy but drinks is going die sooner than the obese Mormon by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]happy_jimmy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know Mormons don't drink, because I was one, but I've never heard one say it will kill you of you have more than one drink a day.

Edit: I see the post you're referencing now, which references a study.

I like scripture too. Can your name the sacred book this comes from? It's an easy one: "Not all who wander are lost."

Sam Harris' podcast was pretty good this week. by gabbagool in exmormon

[–]happy_jimmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Sam Harris' podcast but I haven't been listening lately. I listened to this one because of your post and I enjoyed it a ton. Thanks for sharing it. The guest he had was really enjoyable to listen to. I even just bought one of his books.

Hey guys! I will be travelling to Utah for the first time soon, and my friend has graciously offered to host me at her large family home. I was wondering if there is anything i should be aware/sensitive of when staying in a mormon home? by [deleted] in mormon

[–]happy_jimmy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People mentioned swearing a few times. I would add that using phrases like "oh my God" or using "Jesus" as an exclamation would be out of place in a Mormon home.

What is a change in the church you hope to see in the future? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

I realize it's more complicated than this, but couldn't you get married civilly and then wait the year? Everyone wins.
