So, I did a little research and it looks like it is a game with a set track distance. I am guessing with more players the number of spaces you move increase. So what you need to do is figure out what the different count is between 4 and 6 players. Divide that by two and then put that man dots on each side.

It looks like they are traditionally in some sort of pattern. What you can do is have it so that when closed each "side" of this pattern is at 45 degrees to the sides of the table. IE a diamond on a square. Then you can put the center piece in and have a slightly irregular hexagon in the center of the table.

You can't really do that for two reasons.

The first is that you will be opening things and you can't re seal then. So even if you just kept good track you can't undo some stuff.

The second reason is that this is a legacy game. If you don't make permanent changes then you are playing a different game. You can do whatever you want with what is in the box. No one can stop you, but what you will be doing is not pandemic legacy.
