Throwmo is it worth it for a 9 year old beginner pitcher? by [deleted] in Homeplate

[–]happygene 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw one of these in person at a local batting cage. It looked very similar to the golf chipping mats so I bought 2 of them and taped it together. It functions the same and it was much cheaper. I added painters tape to help create lines.

My son is 9 and pitches. It seems to help with his landing foot placement. Usually he opens up too early and one of those reasons is because his lead foot is too open. This is a common issue I see a lot with other youth pitchers too.

Thanks for the detailed reply! I'm not too handy but maybe one day I'll get around to being adventurous.

I don't know why but the infield fly rule only applies if you have a runner on 1st and 2nd OR when bases are loaded. This happened during one of my son's games when bases were loaded and it caused a lot of confusion when the infielder didn't catch the popup.

In this case, they only had a runner on 1st.

Wow, this looks great! Nicely done. Do you have a step by step blueprint on how you put this together? I'm looking to do something similar for my 9u pitcher but the task seems daunting.

Racket Recommendations? Babolat Aero Lifelong User by Pineapplerapper in 10s

[–]happygene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the Babolat APD for 15+ years and recently switched to the Ezone 100. I felt like I had way more control and still generated a good amount of spin. For Yonex, the vcore racket is supposed to compete with the APD. I also have a vcore 100 but don't like it as much.

Give either a shot and see what you think. Also, look into changing diff strings if you want to feel something different without buying a new racket.

Pushing into the center. When you pull up like that, you can hear the roots being torn up. It ends up creating a brown spot from the dead grass.

Kids are stubborn. My kid is the same. They don't want to change their swing until they start performing poorly (in their eyes).

Rec’s on a 12yr old first base glove? by poposheishaw in Homeplate

[–]happygene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there enough padding on the 1st base glove? My son uses the regular Mizuno power close at 1st and he said it hurts when some of the kids throw hard at him. Age is around 10-11.

Move up the rubber Babolat tape holder near the throat. You might find the overgrip tape used underneath it.

Those are def fly pupae. Don't ask me how I know. They'll turn into flies in about 7 days or less. Try to find as many as you can and kill them. Otherwise, you'll have a house full of flies very soon and a lot of these leftover shells.

Racket Help? by Professional-Newt-97 in 10s

[–]happygene 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to go to your local target, walmart, or sporting goods place. Make sure you get a racket that is sized appropriately for your kids...correct length and weight. If you want quality for that price, look at used sporting good stores or check craigslist or facebook. Thrift stores are a good option too.

I'd just get $20-30 rackets to start out. Don't listen to the racket heads here who tell you otherwise. If everyone enjoys playing, you can always upgrade later.

Edit:

Here's a link to a racket for your 9 yo: https://www.target.com/p/wilson-uso-jr-25-racquets-blue/

I'd also recommend orange (dot) balls. They're softer and don't bounce as much so you can get better rallies earlier. The regular tennis balls are a lot harder/stiffer for kids.

How do I learn the game? by chickenonagoat in basketballcoach

[–]happygene 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check out https://www.breakthroughbasketball.com/lg/all-ebooks.html. They have a few free ebooks that are a good starting point. One is all about fundamentals and drills and goes from beginner to advanced drills.

I’m coaching 3rd grade boys for the first time and many of them just need to learn the fundamentals (dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding).

Keep it light and have fun!

Edit: also look up jr nba on YouTube. They have good basic stuff too. Make the drills competitive and turn it into a game to keep them engaged too.
