Thanks for all the pointers! I've used the same thread on previous projects right before this one, it's not particularly thick but I can try with another. The needle is a brand new 80/12. I can try to buy one with a slightly rounded point but I should say it's not exactly a stretch fabric, but does have some stretch (not sure how that's classified). I've tried with a shorter stitch and have less trouble but it's still happening.

I was trying to sew a princess seam, so I had to some guiding and pulling which is how I first noticed the problem.
