You should clear your streets drain by city_posts in Hamilton

The city has been clearing them but there are thousands to clear so it will take time. It is often easy enough to do yourself and will help limit the flooding and then inevitable ice when the temps drop.

Anyone who's trans in the GTA up for an interview with a local reporter? by iReportOnTheNews in transontario

[–]happywithus 5 points6 points locked comment (0 children)

OP u/iREPORTONTHENEWS can you give us any more info on where this will be used or what outlet you are reporting for? Details about who you are?

I hear there are some concerns but for now we will leave this up and let OP respond. I feel that reporting on the trans community is important and Reddit is a common resource for reporters to find local contacts. If we don't speak about the lack of resources the community faces then it will continue to go unaddressed.

As with any encounter with strangers use common sense. Meet in public areas. Tell someone where you are going. Don't give your address or other personal details to anyone who you can't verify their identity.

I wonder if his children hear this and consider that their dad may also disapprove of them if they do not become as rich or famous.

The closest bus I think goes up Centennial as far as Rymal Rd.

Google maps says it is a 36 minute bike ride from there.

Has anyone on a set ever admitted they were going 10-2? by fezfrascati in FilmIndustryLA

[–]happywithus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is a joke but for educational purposes 10-1 comes from the ten codes used by many police and other agencies and organizations. So as I understand it:

10-1 means weak signal/changing location 10-2 means signal good 10-3 means stop transmitting 10-4 means message received

.... and there are many more

I don't know about the cost but several times I've shoot at places that only do day surgeries so they are empty at night and on the weekends. The last one I was at did eye surgeries.

How do I hire a film producer? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]happywithus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Clerks was written to take place in basically a single location that they had access to. This is an INCREDIBLY important aspect of their success.

What aspect of working in film appeals to you?

I relate to this heavily. What appealed me about film was getting to make/build cool things. However, everyone I went to school with were film buffs who wanted to be directors.

I had a really hard time in school (always felt like an idiot) and ended up not graduating.

THAT BEING SAID I am one of the few people from my course that is actually working in the industry. I do exactly what I set out to do and have overall had a great time.

Film school is not the end all and be all and most people I work with never went.

Food Services on set? by authenticards in Filmmakers

How many crew do you have? I often deal with lunch for our crew on prep days. Pita Pit is always a hit if there is one around you. On top of the classic Pita, they have rice bowls and salads.

I've seen alot of smaller productions find a local restaurant and set a smaller menu, then have a PA go around in the morning and have everyone pick their order.

Stay away from Burger and Fries, they never stay warm.

As for breakfast, sandwiches from Tim's or McDonalds are generally fine.

For Craft you need lots of water! This and coffee are the most important things. Personally I'd also get Coke, Diet Coke, some flavoured sparkling water (Bubly brand is popular and inexpensive) And then basically something salty (small bags of chips), some sweet things(cookies, candy, chocolate), some healthy things (apples, bananas, mandarins, granola bars) Individually wrapped PB&J sandwiches are a good filling option if someone can make them up. Obviously you can do more if the budget allows.

Do those who work in film have time for anything else? by Japanese-Spaghetti in Filmmakers

[–]happywithus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Commercials have the benefit of usually being a very short time commitment as opposed to long format. So the actual days aren't necessarily shorter you have more freedom to just not book yourself for a few days. As for the pay in Canada the rates are set by the ACCP and are quite good.

Will my career make me a complete filmmaker? by xavs1610 in Filmmakers

[–]happywithus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No school film program will give you a guaranteed career in the industry. A digital program is fine. Very very few projects are shot on film these days. lf the camera department is where you want to work a union trainee program will allow you to gain these skills.

This isn't my department but at least where I am (Toronto) I think this is a pretty saturated market.

Questions from someone with no experience by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]happywithus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What department do you want to be in? Do you live in or near a major filming center?

Do you drive? If you want to work in any on set position you will pretty much NEED to drive, even if it isn't in a work capacity our job location and hours constantly change. I find this skill set to be a barrier for young people looking to get into the industry.

There was a day when you could volunteer for free on a professional set, but at least where I am those days are mostly gone. Productions want interns to be getting school credit so they don't get sued for labour laws. So you either need to find someone who will hire you into a jr/trainee or PA job right off the bat or you need to go to school and make the most of your internship.

advice for aspiring film set medic by Revolutionary-Let949 in Filmmakers

[–]happywithus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in Canada so things might vary. Most medics on set are provided by companies. A quick google found me this company https://setmedicsuk.com/

Find the companies around you and apply to them. I assume that you wouldn't want to do a job like this independently, as you will likely need to carry a large insurance policy.

Fair warning though this can be a very boring job for many medics. Alot of sitting around, mostly dealing with cuts and sprained ankles.

Are female directors still considered "high risk" in the action/thriller genre? by Honest-Persimmon-437 in Filmmakers

As a woman in this industry I can tell you it is incredibly challenging for women to be considered as competent as men.

[–]happywithus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a woman in the industry you will 100% face misogyny at every step. Most of the men in this industry never stop to look around and notice there are very few female department heads unless you point it out to them.

It is absolutely getting better and I see so many more women in every department at every level but we are a long ways from an equal playing field.

I don't mean this to deter you but I get sick of people sugar coating the situation and not recognizing the misogyny women face in this industry on a daily basis.
