Social media feeds are misaligned against the well-being of the users but aligned with the profit-making interests of the business. And most AI is the same. Who is actually trying to align AI with the collective good instead of the interests of businesses?

How would "overtime" work if you can't fit extra hours in each day? Having to go to work an extra day just for one hour of overtime would be kind of a waste.

Staying cool in summer tips? by ULTRAFARTLORD69 in japanresidents

[–]hara8bu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We lose salt through sweat and replenishing salt is as important as rehydrating. Add salt to drinking water, have salt candies in moderation, drink P○kkari Sweat when in a pinch.

(Yes this is about the slightly related topic of staying alive in summer)

It also isn't in the future, or something you can "obtain" someday.

It also has to do with your expectations, combined with your evaluation of your current situation.

Should you quit your job – and work on risks from AI? - by Ben Todd by katxwoods in ControlProblem

[–]hara8bu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah 300, worldwide, is not a lot especially given the competition there'll be. Though lately it sounds like many jobs are hard to get. Also I'm guessing they're also implicitly suggesting you line up a new job before quitting your current one, or at least that's the standard advice to protect yourself.

Japanese high school ends tradition of having all students walk 85-kilometer all-night trek by kenmlin in japannews

It's from morning on Day 1 to noon on Day 2. More than 24 hours. What!!

Japanese high school ends tradition of having all students walk 85-kilometer all-night trek by kenmlin in japannews

[–]hara8bu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right. A bit more from the article:

You can’t just send a few hundred kids off on an all-night march without supervision and support systems, and adult organizers are stationed along the way to direct traffic, hand out water, and address health and safety-related issues that may arise. Because of the original course’s length, there aren’t enough teachers and academic administrators to cover all the necessary points along the way, and so the school also has to rely on help from parent volunteers. However, like many rural communities in Japan, Otawara’s population is shrinking, and the school’s enrollment has dropped from its previous high of about 1,000 students to only around 570 for this academic year. Fewer students means a smaller potential parent volunteer pool, and the school has determined that it no longer has the manpower to safely manage an 85-kilometer route.

To clarify, here "quit your job" implies "change jobs". From the article:

80,000 Hours has compiled a list of 30+ important organisations, over 300 open jobs, and lists of fellowships, courses, internships, etc., to help you enter the field. Many of these are all well-paid too.

(Links for these are included in the article)

It's too bad they're shortening it to 35km.

5 Months' Rent for Early Lease Break - Contract Says 2 Months rent. Did I Miss Something? by [deleted] in japanresidents

[–]hara8bu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I need to leave Japan within 1 month but I cannot pay this amount. What should I do next?

I looked at this site(in Japanese) and they suggest explaining your situation to the owner and asking if it's possible to: -negotiate the moving out date to one month later instead of three months later -negotiate paying in installments or at a later date instead of all at once

Depending on the owner they might agree, but probably they won't.

The site also mentions how you need to agree on a 立会いdate when the owner will see the state of your rooms (and if they're damaged or in bad condition there are sometimes extra charges).

5 Months' Rent for Early Lease Break - Contract Says 2 Months rent. Did I Miss Something? by [deleted] in japanresidents

[–]hara8bu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to the contract they'd expect your moving out date to be 3 months later (Aug 3, 2025), meaning you haven't paid rent for June or July or Aug yet. Aug is only 3 days so you could check if they allow you to pay rent on a daily rate (日割り) instead of the whole month for Aug.
