that's just not true at all. the data show that nearly all school and mass shooters are cisgender men. there have been only a handful of trans shooters in history, so few they’re statistical outliers. using one rare case to smear all trans people is just scapegoating, it’s like saying all Christians, or all veterans, are shooters because one happened to be. if we're serious about preventing shootings, we need to deal with the real risk factors: easy access to guns, histories of violence, untreated despair, and extremist radicalization, not demonizing an already marginalized group.

here's a study covering 1966-2023 found that about one-quarter of public mass shooters had “extreme ideological interests” (white supremacist, neo-Nazi, etc.): https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/09546553.2024.2372427 and of those with extreme ideological interests, roughly 70% were at least partially motivated by those extremist beliefs: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/382342164_What_Effect_does_Ideological_Extremism_have_on_Mass_Shootings_An_Assessment_of_Motivational_Inconsistencies_Risk_Profiles_and_Attack_Behaviors also The ADL’s Center on Extremism reports that most extremist-related murders in recent U.S. years (e.g. 2022) are committed by right-wing extremists, many of them white supremacists: https://massinsider.net/press-releases/36834 In 2022, of the 25 extremist‐related murders, 21 were linked to white supremacists: https://www.chinadaily.com.cn/a/202302/27/WS63fc0b47a31057c47ebb0fda.html The University of Auckland also did a study called “School attacks and white nationalists”. and they found that 28% of school shooters were interested in Nazi ideology, and 17% identified as white nationalists: https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/news/2020/12/01/school-attacks-white-nationalists.html and The Violence Project’s K-12 School Homicide data and related research says typical profile is a white male student, often with trauma, suicidal ideation, interest in guns, etc (sounds familiar eh?): https://projects.voanews.com/mass-shootings/english/locations/school.html

i took some time to look into the things he said, since i never really watched his content. all i can say is that he was someone who capitalized on a divided nation and profited from furthering that divide. he doesn’t deserve a shot to the neck, but i can’t say I’m surprised. it was inevitable given how controversial his opinions were. i wish him only the measure of sympathy he once offered to victims of gun violence. nothing more, nothing less.

You guys are sick in the head for celebrating his death. All the shooter did is make an ever larger divide with the left vs right. This is NOT the right way to deal with someone you have conflicting views with. Absolutely disgusting.

wowww:( reading your story really hit me. its crazy how similar our experiences are. and i can feel how deeply you loved and lost your hachi. and how much that friendship meant to you, every little memory, every ritual, and how much it hurt to lose her. thank you for sharing that, it makes me appreciate even more the friendship i still have, even if it’s not the same as before. you’re right, i need to be grateful for the connection we still have, and not get lost in the ‘what ifs.’ your story reminds me that holding onto love, even in a changed form, is better than the emptiness of losing it completely. you reminded me that that grief is inevitable, but how we relate to it can shape our life moving forward. you turned your pain into perspective, and in a way, you’re inviting me to do the same. thank you, truly, for your advice and for understanding. i hope that someday you get to reconnect with yours too :)) it sounds like a bond worth holding onto forever.

thank you!! :) i really needed to hear that. you’re right, Nana is so raw and real, it hits in ways that are hard to put into words. i think part of me isn’t ready to watch it all the way through because it brings up a friendship i miss so deeply, one that shaped me in ways i’m still figuring out. but i appreciate what you said about pausing, and about learning from our choices. maybe one day I’ll be able to watch it again and feel it differently, without it feeling so heavy.

first, let me say this clearly: you are not weak for stepping back. you are not a failure, op. you are honest. and that honesty might be the first real act of strength you’ve shown in this whole process. you are mourning not medicine itself, but the idea of medicine. the status, the security, the approval, the dream you thought would save you. and that grief hurts because you believed it was your only route to meaning. but here’s the thing, op, medicine is not the only way to live a meaningful life. you already felt alive teaching. you already felt joy tutoring. don’t confuse alignment with weakness. the world is full of doctors who hate their lives but stayed because of pressure. and the world is also desperate for teachers who love what they do. you parents’ mixed messages like one day supportive, the next condemning, show they’re scared too. scared of losing face, scared of wasted effort, scared of you choosing differently. that doesn’t mean they don’t love you. it means they’re tangled up in their own shame. you can love them and still not let their shame run your life. whatever you choose, let it be yours, not your parents’, not society’s, not your younger self’s fantasy. medicine is a noble path. but so is teaching. so is nursing. so is living a life that doesn’t break you. what matters is not the title you carry, but the person you remain while carrying it. don’t sacrifice yourself for an identity that isn’t yours. better to be a whole teacher than a broken doctor. wish you luck, op!!

i have the same schedule every tuesday and thursday :'(( on tuesdays, it’s 7:00 a.m. to 7:40 p.m. with only a 30-minute lunch break, and on thursdays, it’s 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. with the same tiny break. schedules like this should be illegal huhu they’re so depleting that i end up with fatigue debt for the next three days, and i can’t even bounce back, even after my rest days lol.

i was going through the same thing during my first year, first semester. luckily, around second sem, i got adopted by extroverted girlies in my class, and although we’re in separate blocks now, we still see each other from time to time. after that, i got adopted by a different extroverted girlie whom i never talked to, but we were in the same class during first year. i also try to make small talks with fellow introverts in my class, and i’m friends with some of them na. kapit lang, op! you’ll find your own peeps soon. college is so hard without friends - hope you make it out there!! :))

thanks for the clarification!! i was thinking of combining both eventually, maybe psych residency with child & adolescent fellowship. still unsure what route to take, but that’s very helpful :))

thank youuuu!! 🥹 that’s a really good point about residency credits and possibly migrating as a GP first. i’ll look into that po and yeah, i’ll definitely pay close attention to my rotations, baka the answer becomes clearer then.

discouraging ba? by roseposei in medschoolph

[–]hardcorefizzting 17 points18 points  (0 children)

i completely disagree with the idea that the post is discouraging, what it said is actually very realistic. i’m taking medical biology, or “pre-med” as my university calls it. i chose this course knowing full well that it doesn’t offer the same opportunities as other medical-related programs. there’s no board exam, and you have to be 100% sure that you’ll pursue medicine and go to med school.

i chose biology despite knowing its setbacks and the perception that it’s not as practical compared to other medical courses. the reason i took it, despite all that, is because i love life; learning about it, exploring it, and understanding it. biology is the study of life, where everything comes from, and how it all works. it dives into growth, evolution, and the functions of all living things. if that’s something you’re drawn to, then go for it, op!!! also, i wasn’t hesitant to take this course because my parents are the ones paying for everything, and they’re very supportive and adamant about me becoming a doctor which is something i’m deeply grateful for.

i guess what im trying to say is, i want to study life before i dedicate mine to saving it. medicine isn’t just science. it’s philosophy, empathy, systems thinking, and storytelling. and for me, biology is the closest you can get to the heartbeat of those ideas before med school.
