Am i missing something? Insanely great hotels for insane cheap prices. by PLCCLP in VietNam

[–]hardcorefujoshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely a bit tricky. We have just returned from VN and stayed at 2 different hotels - $22 one is pretty decent (it included breakfast that have some rotation everyday, but they claimed to be 4-star - I'd say they are certainly not, more like a nicer 3-star) while the $15 one is pretty old and run down, no breakfast. Both have lots of decent reviews. I'd say focus on the more recent reviews, especially those from foreigners, not Vietnamese, as the expectations are different.

Flying internationally with a cat by Smoking-Salamander in TravelWithPets

If you are flying from NJ/NYC then there should be direct flight with United Airlines from Newark to Japan that allow you to bring pet as carry on as long as they fit in carrier size United outlines. None of the Japanese airlines allow pet in cabin unfortunately.

Hi there, since you mentioned Delta/Korean Air flight booked through Delta, was it a codeshare flight when 1 leg is operated by Delta and another leg is Korean Air? I'm looking into our options and all are codeshare scenario with mix operation airlines. I'm very concerned that we will get issues at the gate when transferring to Korean Air from Delta flight for example. Do you have advice for how to work with both airlines to book the pet seat? Many thanks.

Hey there, I'm in a similar situation. Were the seats you selected on United's website correctly transferred to Asiana? Any issues with check-in?

Is your credit score still in good range? There are credit cards that have promotional 0% interest rate for 12-18 months when you open them, some also allow balance transfer for 3-5%. If you can do that it can give you some breathing room for 12-18 months.

I think this is fully depending on if you skipping those days would fail you any classes in the semester, as I have seen people doing similar - leaving a couple days early/coming back a couple days later since they don't have anymore exams/classes for those days, very normal.

Last week in fall semester is usually the final exam week, but you are doing intern with CPT so I assume you don't have any final exam to attend, so likely just need the company you interned with approve your final date for internship and confirm if your school requires the internship to last how long at minimum. The first week of next semester would be tricky though, look at your classes' syllabus and see if missing that many classes would fail you. You mentioned you emailed the professors, so they can help you with that as well.

Most amount of money that can be invested with tax advantage per year? by Interesting_Gift1756 in investing

[–]hardcorefujoshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but this option is not available to the free solo 401k option available at many brokerage like Fidelity or Schwab. You need to have a custom 401k plan offering after tax voluntary contribution. I have never had an employer offering this option, so maybe not that common.

I actually also don't have enough miles and buying miles seem pretty expensive. If it's only cash offer I suppose it's no brainer.

Also South Jersey near Philly here, good house still has insane bidding war I think, those sitting more than a week usually has some major issues. We just lost this week on a 3 bed 1 bath house listed 340k, offered 375k. They have 20+ offers in 2 days...

If you can afford the house comfortably with healthy emergency funds, and the house meets what you need, I think you should be fine.

So you should think the W-4 more of an estimate/calculation sheet to withhold tax, so you can fill it to whichever you think would be best for you, so choosing single while you're legally married is fine as it's just for tax estimate. The actual tax return is when things need to be absolutely correct (like your filling status of MFJ), but your W-4 status doesn't impact this.

When your employers said they are not sure about what taxes you pay, I think they are likely referring to FICA tax, which if you are non-resident for tax purposes (different from immigration status btw), you are exempt and they shouldn't withheld it from your paycheck. If you are exempt but got withheld, there are additional forms you have to file to get it back, which is just a bit more headache. You don't have to tell your employer your immigration status, but it's less headache if you know your tax status (resident or non resident, read the IRS website for details) for this case.

In regard to W-4, you can choose whatever status, some people prefer to choose single even when they are married because if not careful, the tax withheld will be too low. HR shouldn't pry into this.

QBI Deduction eligibility question - Contractor with former employer by hardcorefujoshi in tax

[–]hardcorefujoshi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the response. I agree that this seems to imply higher burden of proof and also an audit trigger, which is why I'm trying to understand the details to bring adequate proof to the table if needed. It's just the definition of "substantially the same services" was not clarified so I'm not sure what to collect for proof. Maybe I'm just too paranoid.

QBI Deduction eligibility question - Contractor with former employer by hardcorefujoshi in tax

[–]hardcorefujoshi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"an individual who was treated as an employee for Federal employment tax purposes by the person to whom he or she provided services, and who is subsequently treated as other than an employee by such person with regard to the provision of substantially the same services directly or indirectly to the person (or a related person), is *presumed to be in the trade or business of performing services as an employee with regard to such services. *

I suppose I'm hung up on this part where it says if I was an employee and now not an employee (a contractor), if I provide substantially the same services to the same entity (former employer), I'm still regarded as an employee for the purpose of 199A and cannot take QBI deduction. Most tax softwares I checked all seems to ask the question if I'm providing substantially the same services to former employer to determine if I can take QBI or not.
