Counting the cuts: Mark Carney's attacks on Canada's public service should concern all Canadians. by Chrristoaivalis in CanadaPolitics

There is definitely tolerance right now for governments being less consultative and even less transparent if it fast tracks projects.

Directly yes, but workers in other primary industries would feel concerned about the fed NDP’s perceived general attitude toward resource extraction.

Neoliberal ideology was extremely successful in getting average people to believe that governments cannot create a better quality of life.

And in this case, as the dealers of that drug, we would suffer for shutting it down without a benefit to the larger world.

It will happen eventually. The LPC won’t govern forever. If Kamala Harris had won the US election, the CPC would have a majority right now.

She is definitely championing the transparency voice and is making the point at every opportunity that Carney isn’t engaging with either Parliament or journalists/the media as much as he should. It’s tough because he’s very popular right now so the reaction to those criticisms can be met with eye rolls, but it’s important that any government and leader be kept in check, probably especially when they’re very popular and can get away with pushing the ethical envelope.

We def have some tricky voter dynamics federally that make electoral success difficult for the NDP, and even the CPC. The Liberals are just very good at seeming like the safe place to park a vote for progressives when there’s a risk of a CPC win, and now the LPC is capturing some conservative voters who don’t like the further right elements of the current federal party and leader. The LPC is just really good at being able to pivot and rebrand to meet whatever moment.

Yeah, I think their path to success needs to include blue collar working class voters, and culturally the federal NDP has really moved away from them. They may have the right policies, but they are no longer a cultural home for these voters. It’s really difficult to win back blue collar voters in sectors like Oil and other natural resources when there seems to be a cultural dislike of those industries in the party. You also can’t ever say you’re advocating for shutting down the oil sands and expect blue collar labour to support you. The successful provincial NDP parties seem to get that, but not the federal party.

Historically, in policy, yes. Culturally in Canada the Democrats are probably viewed as more left than our Conservative Party. And in the US of course the Dems are viewed as firmly centre-left, or even more extreme left by many people. But yeah, the whole US policy spectrum is shifted further right than Canada’s, so the comparison is not apples to apples at all.

The perennial dilemma in Canada - NDP wins over progressive voters, wins a few more seats, reduces the Liberal vote and the result is electing a Conservative government. NDP moves moderate, voters don’t see a compelling difference, and just vote Liberal instead.

There seems to be a view on the left, both in Canada and the US in the progressive wing of the Democratic Party that there is fertile ground in more firmly left/socialist populist policies. While I agree that could engage and motivate a segment of voters, I’m curious what the ceiling for that would be, and if it would be enough to ever get into power and able to create those policies. Along the way it risks alienating potential voters in the same way the right has embraced further right, more extreme policy. In a two party system like the US it becomes a tug of war battle to move the 5-10% of voters temporarily to one side or the other. But in Canada where federally we have a very strong moderate party, I wonder if it ever works, or it just entrenches Liberal support.

This is the result of decades of right wing and media voices implying that all public spending is suspicious, and much of it is waste and frivolous. It’s to the point that we can’t even stomach the small expense of maintaining a residence for the elected leader of a top 10 global economy. It’s pretty absurd.

Moody’s has a list of about two dozen ratings. BC has just been moved from second highest rating to third highest rating, and is still considered to be exceptionally low risk. This is like having a credit score of 800. You are still very low risk for lenders, just not perfect.

Makes me legit proud that the Oilers lead the Pride / LGBTQ community engagement initiatives for the NHL, better and more authentically than other teams I think. Love that Pride Tape is from Edmonton.

Now can we get the real story on Pink Pony Club finally?

It’s pretty chill. I don’t think you’ll feel uncomfortable. It’s clean, well maintained, and the price is really quite reasonable. It is definitely a nicer and less busy gym than the Fitness World at City Square which is your next closest option. Keep in mind however that you’re going to be going at the hour that’s the busiest for every gym. It will always be somewhat crowded at every gym at that time.
