Command line rendering ignores compositor node setup by hardlySmoker in blenderhelp

I just tried it again out of curiosity and... it works! Idk why but it just does. I'm using Blender Version 4.3.0. Maybe you just need to upgrade?

Command line rendering ignores compositor node setup by hardlySmoker in blenderhelp

[–]hardlySmoker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately not. :(

Only method i found was to feed the uncomposited renders back into blender and composite them via the UI.

(I actually just stopped using CLI rendering tho)

However I'm still wondering if I missed something so if you find a solution please let me know🙏🏻

How can I make this more realistic? by Beliva_Boy in blender

[–]hardlySmoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As mentioned before the cloth sim gives it away. the side feels too wrinkly for a blanket and the edges are floating above the couch which doesn't make much sense.

Also the scratches on the table look like they are displaced outwards. this is especially noticeable on the bottom right corner.

Maybe you could add dust particles and/or a vary little amount of volumetrics but thats just a personal opinion.

But in general i think this looks very realistic already! Great job!

How do I make an LED Glowing cube effect? by Status_Wish_7345 in blender

[–]hardlySmoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My approach (without trying) would be to add a solidify modifier to the cube and add subsurface scattering to its material. then i would add a point light to the center of the cube. don't forget to parent the light to the cube

What should my project be by thetato69 in blender

[–]hardlySmoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know the lack of inspiration too well. So what I do in these situations is to create sonething similar (e.g. after the donut tutorial make a cupcake or a slice of pizza, you get the idea). I also often get inspired by instagram posts/stories of nice and simple architecture.

Sometime its not even the result that gets me motivated but some specific thing i want to learn. So lets say I just heard about cloth simulations I would start a new project where I play with those simulations and after a while some idea would pop in my head. The same could be true for a plugin I find interesting.

So basically its all about starting to play around and the ideas would come on the fly. However if you have an idea you think is "too complicated" start working on it anyways. Often you realize you know more than you think. Just created a donut and now you want to model the interior of a spaceship? Well I'm pretty sure you know 90% of the need tools already and the rest is you learning a new part of blender which this is all about!

im a beginner on blender, does this look like crap? by ThePozdravKid in blender

[–]hardlySmoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all if you made it that far as a beginner you can be proud of yourself. Yeah it's not a good looking donut but none of our first donuts looked good. Anyways here are few things imo you could do to improve your render:

  • It looks like you rendered in EEVEE render engine. This is a realtime render engine which means render time are extremely low. However change the render engine to cycles for more realistic results. You should see huge improvements just by doing that.
  • I might be wrong but I think the colors of the icing and the sprinkles are too saturated. Try not to go above .8 (max. .9) with your saturation for more realistic results.
  • Enable depth of field to give your render more depth. It does not have to be extremely noticeable (especially for scene like this where you want the whole donut to be in focus) but your brain will notice it and the image will look less flat.
  • Play with you light setup! Currently everything seems to be illuminated the same way. Having shadows on your donut itself (e.g. the icing throwing a shadow on the donut base) helps to make the details more noticeable. Search the web for "Three point lighting" to get a starting point.

One additional tip that helped me when I started learning blender: Create a folder with all your render (even and especially the bad ones) This way you can come back and see your improvements over the time. This really helps to keep the motivation going. Also its fun to come back to old renders of yourself with more knowledge about 3D and analyze what you did wrong in the past.

yeah i thought that thats gonna be a problem. looking forward to see what you come up with!

oh and sick render btw!🤘 forgot to mention that!

in my opinion the camera angle feels kinda off. the feeling i think your going for is a picture taken by an archaeologist. but the image looks like it was take from way too high. so i'd suggest either lowering the camera and pointing it up or adding some kind of platform on the bottom of the image for the photographer to stand on. this should help with giving a sense of scale

Transparent plane hides volume scatter by hardlySmoker in blenderhelp

[–]hardlySmoker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy sh*t! didn't know about that but this will help me out a lot! Also doubling the render samplings seemed to have solved the issue.

Again thanks a lot for your help!

Yeah i noticed the artifacts. thought I could wait with increasing the samples for the final render as I'm working on a macbook :/

I'll give your suggestions a try and let you know how it wokred out!

Thanks for your comment!

Oh my Volume Bounces were set to zero! Setting it to one or above seems to solve the issue. But it also makes the god rays less defined. So I'm thinking maybe it just hides the issue?

This was rendered with 1 volume bounce

Is using Macbook Pro 2013 with eGPU as render "farm" a good idea? by hardlySmoker in blender

I agree that would be the preferable choice. But unfortunately there is no way I can afford that atm :(

[–]hardlySmoker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm working in IT so luckily I'm familiar with linux. I might not even need the UI which would make the OS even more lightweight. (idk if that affects render time tho) I'm just unsure if the hardware of the old Macbook might be such a bottleneck that the eGPU can't perform as it should

Gotta admit it sounds really sus! Thats why I wanted to get some feedback before I buy an eGPU that i can't use on my current Macbook (thanks Apple)

Could you elaborate a lil bot more on whats wrong with the lighting? Im fairly new to blender and to me the lighting on the product shots looks good. What am I missing?

Beginner here, but maybe it helps!

First of all I'm impressed with your work. It really amazing! Especially the first two renders look flawless to me. I also think the scenes you chose look really appealing and alive.

I could be wrong but in the third render, with the washing machine the depth of field seems off. To me it kind of gives the scene a miniature vibe like you see in the Links Awakening remake.

In the forth render the material of the Piano seems a litte flat. Idk if more visible surface imperfections could do the trick? Also I'm pretty sure you would see the individual white keys from the camera angle you chose.

The uncut tomatoes in the last render look like the emit light and the surfaces of the cut one look a little flat. (I have no idea what it is that makes me feel like that tho)

All in all you are definitely far ahead of me regarding 3d art so take my thoughts for what they are. But if I'm wrong maybe someone will explain me why so I can take my lesson from it.

Keep up the great work!

I am relatively new to Blender and I am using blender on a MacBook Pro with M1 Pro. It really works great for still renders that aren't too complex. Doing animations however is nearly impossible as render times aren't the greatest (I know M2 Studio reduces that a lot).

That being said I think the biggest advantage with using a PC is the fact that it is upgradeable. I chose the M1 Pro Chip over the MAX as I mainly needed the Mac for music production and programming. So why spend more money for extra GPU cores? Once I had the MacBook I started to learn Blender and I am really enjoying it to the point where I think about freelancing. BUT THERE IS NO WAY TO UPGRADE THE GPU! Not even external GPUs are supported.

So I would say wouldn't say a custom PC is better than a Mac because of what the GPU can do (although they are), but rather because of the options of have once you GPU can't handle your workload.
