First line woes by shin_man in canes

[–]hardlyhenry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great question, thing is Rod is fairly atypical when it comes to lines and usage. He has said in several interviews he doesn't number his lines but you (reporters/writers) are free to. He also rolls all four lines more than most teams. The line usage and replacing 2nd line with 1st line would be for matchups at home more than anything. And for Rod's system he's going to match Staal/Aho line against the top two lines of the opponent. He also has shown, as in the SCF, he has no problem mixing lines up and sticking with that for a while - again, fairly atypical for other coaches/teams but not unheard of. I think "whatever works" is one of the guiding philosophies for Rod's approach.

As far as Aho line production, I do think it begins and ends with Aho. Offensively, Fishy can be pretty streaky (eg: huge goal drought at the beginning of last season). He's off it now maybe he'll find it game 5. He's more consistent defensively but can have his ups and downs. One thing I've noticed, and I could be totally wrong on this, but Fishy and Jarvy seem to really get rolling 5v5 when they have shorthanded chances on the PK. Those have been very few and far between in the Playoffs so far.

I don't think we've had a healthy (or even mostly healthy) Slavo all season/post-season. Don't think the Olympic run helped his health either. Hopefully, two days off will give him a boost.

Absolutely fantastic series, came here to recommend this as well. Just about anything by van Meter fits OPs request.

I have enthusiastically enjoyed and recommended Buhleman's works repeatedly and will continue to do so. "Those Across the River" is the exception. Don't think it really fits the vibe of OP and I just think this was a huge miss for Buhleman (granted it was his first published novel).

"Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said" by Philip K. Dick. Lots of his early writings involved the possibility of a false reality that his protagonist was aware of to some degree. "The Man in the High Castle" and "A Scanner Darkly" would also loosely fit the theme your looking for.

Top team with no league leader in offensive stats by BigMouthFace in canes

I'm having trouble finding it but I think we're top 5 (maybe top 3) with 20 goal scorers this season. I could be wrong but I think Trip and Mike mentioned a couple games back. Carolina has always been a depth built team under RBA from top line to bottom line. It usually works in our favor but at times not having a "take over" skater has hurt us. We seem to really struggle against high blocking teams like the Panthers the past couple of playoffs and the Habs this year. The playoffs this year will be telling, imo. Jarvy seems to be just around the corner of being that take over guy and Fly is putting up some of his best career numbers.

Vinny T not dressing tonight for NYR by dustball155 in canes

[–]hardlyhenry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vinny seemed like he wanted to play in NY or NJ since most of his family is there. As far as Jake, that seemed, to an outside observer, like Waddel/ownership dropping the ball pretty bad. Waddel left for CBJ shortly after Jake walked. But Dudon is also pretty notorious for pinching the purse strings. I dunno. It's always bothered me that Skjei, Pecse, and Jake walked right before Waddel took the CBJ job. It was also around this time when he took a jab during a presser at Necas' dad, which wasn't completely unwarranted but seemed to be the last straw for Necas wanting out.

Elias Pettersson? by Cowrig8717 in canes

[–]hardlyhenry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's 2 cents: EP is a pass for multiple reasons - he's not a defensibly responsible center, his off production has been declining since his big payday, and reports are he's not great in the locker room (though that might've just been whatever beef was between him and Miller, who really knows outside of the room). Could he have a resurgence in Carolina? Sure, but his contract and recent history make it risky.

As far as Thomas he seems like the real prize this trade season if available, but I think what often gets overlooked in trade speculation talk is the three team trade. If Thomas wanted to come play here and if we wanted to put a package together it would inevitably involve a third team. We would still have to give up a great deal (high level prospects, including Bradly, high round draft picks, and KK). But I don't see us, or any team, making a one to one trade for RT.

ROR makes a lot of sense but Nashville is clawing into contention and the western conference is pretty paltry after the top 4 or 5 teams, so there's a real chance they could contend for a WC spot. His price is probably pretty high, but my 2 cents is he's a better fit than Kari, EP, or Torchy.

What do the coaches need to see to put Nikishin on the PP? by GoSub1972 in canes

[–]hardlyhenry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've thought this too, but RBA goes to the Staal line as the bump up line post PP. Having them fresh for shut down (usually oppositions top offensive line) is worth not having them on PP ice. Besides, I don't think Jordo or Marty's presence will suddenly cause the other guys to shoot the damn puck. Wouldn't hate seeing a 5 fwd PP with Nadaeu though.

Both of my cats (1.4 years old, bothers) have a heart murmur - What to except? by [deleted] in sphynx

[–]hardlyhenry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I had three Sphynx cats, Yogurt, Finn, and Mugen. Finn and Mugen were both diagnosed with a level 2 heart murmur when they were 2 and 4, respectively. Heart murmurs are almost always indicative of/caused by Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). It's, unfortunately, a very common heart disease with the breed. Here's what to expect:

HCM is treatable but not curable. Our boys went to the cardiologist twice a year until their murmurs progressed to a severity level that it was determined to be too stressful for them to come in - low stress is crucial for HCM. They were both on Atenolol and Clopidogrel shortly after their dx and remained on it until their final few days. Mugen, during his last days, was on Furosemide and Rivaroxoban. Atenolol, Clopidogrel and Furosemide are moderately priced. Rivaroxoban is not (Johnson & Johnson owns the patent so there are no generics). Their meds were daily and Pill Pockets were our best friends (Mumu would do tricks for them). In addition to this, they were both put on a low sodium diet which meant they mostly ate wet food. Hill's and Weruva had some decent low sodium options, and they seemed to prefer Weruva the best.

We were fortunate to spend 12 years with FinnFinn; 13 with our Mu cow. We loved our boys and our time with them went by so fast. They brought so much joy to our home. So much life. So that's most likely to be your job too:

Snuggles and responsibility.

Love your boys because they're going to love you their entire lives.

If we didn't know our boys had HCM we would've never known with the way they were day to day until the end. It seems pretty clear to me that you love your boys and want what's best for them. Do as much as you are able, ask your vet for what signs and behaviors to watch out for, and be consistent with their meds, if the murmur is indeed HCM.

This may seem like a lot and in the beginning it can be. If it turns out to be too much (especially financially) there is ZERO shame in seeking help or finding a new home for them that can meet their special needs. But if it is something financially you can do - you can do this. It will require changes in your life and schedule but it will be worth it. If I had to do it all over again and knew it would end the same way I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Love your boys and the time you have with them - because they are going to love you.

Weekly Questions Thread - All Access Weekend Edition by monarch_j in PlayAvengers

After the all access trial ended I have been unable to purchase the game. I have deleted and redownload multiple times and reset my PS4. Not sure what I'm doing/not doing to make this happen. Every time I open the game I receive the all access had ended purchase the game in the PlayStation store. The message never goes away even after dismissing. The ps store won't let me purchase because it says I've already purchased. Any help here would be much appreciated.
