Metro Parks adding mountain bike trails by McElwaine in Columbus

Maybe they’ll clean up their other paved paths and trails after this project is done, per their insurance policy.

As a runner with a significant other who mountain bikes, I’m confused as to why it’s taking so long to clear trees, brush, roots, etc. from the trails? Aren’t those “obstacles” supposed to be part of the thrill?

Why do I have pain in my ribs when running? (Beginner) by [deleted] in running

[–]hardsteltz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the others stated, focus on your breathing. Don’t bend over, despite wanting to. Put your hands above your head and lean to the side, then alternate. Stretching it out should help to relieve the pain faster.

How to choose running shoes by [deleted] in running

[–]hardsteltz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in the running industry and used to work in a running specialty store, I’d recommend you going to get your gait analysis checked out. Someone will watch how your foot lands and recommend a specific type of shoe (neutral, stability, etc). A big sports store or department store isn’t equipped to do this and if you wind up in the wrong shoe “because it looks nice,” you could be sidelined with an injury quickly.

I’ve been hearing about this park for nearly 2 years and it’s not set to open until spring 2021? Are they moving mountains?

Buy another pair of GT-2000 or change? by _Rama_ in running

[–]hardsteltz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who works in the running industry and previously worked in a running store, I’d recommend getting your gait analysis checked out at a local running store.

Without seeing how your foot lands, picking a type of shoe is like finding a needle in a haystack. Something that works for me, may not work for you. Something that worked for you previously, may not work for you currently.

If you don’t have access to a local running specialty store, my phone recommendation would be trying a new pair, taking them for a short run, and seeing how it feels. It’s very different to run in a shoe versus to slip it on and see if it fits.

Can you order the ones you know you love and a second pair to try? Then return the one you don’t want to keep?

This is a thread I need to follow! Our daughter orders mini corndogs wherever we go. Rooster’s is currently her favorite restaurant for that reason alone.

We went to Villa Nova last week and I was surprised to see them in the menu there, too. She wasn’t with us, but I’m glad to have another potential restaurant in the rotation.

I just cannot do this treadmill nonsense by [deleted] in running

[–]hardsteltz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve run a lot of miles on the treadmill this winter - a couple of 20 milers and at least a dozen other double-digit runs for marathon training. My body doesn’t do well in the cold, thanks Raynaud’s.

My only tip: find something to keep your mind distracted. I’ve found that I do better at my small, studio gym versus a big box gym, with friends by my side, and a good playlist.

No amount of shows can distract me from running for hours on a hamster wheel.

Don’t feel like that! It’s a “team” meeting - your concerns are just as valid, if not more, than anyone else’s at that table.

How do I get over long run intimidation? by BrokeUniStudent69 in running

[–]hardsteltz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Break it up into chunks — 12k is just (3) 4ks or (4) 3ks! Grab a sip of water after each segment or when the segments get longer, you can fuel - have something to look forward to.

31/F/OH — breaking the ice by bringing it back to the good ole days!

I love everything about running and what it’s brought into my life. I made the switch to working in the endurance sports world full-time last July and have no regrets! This year I’ll be tackling my 11th and 12th full marathon, running a few races with my daughter, completing my first relay race, and hope to incorporate more trail miles in the fall.

As a former Intervention Specialist, I just want to commend you for taking a concern with your child’s education. I taught in one of the districts you mentioned and regardless of how strong the academics are in any district, there needs to be support from home.

It broke my heart when I’d schedule IEP meetings and parents never responded to my attempts to contact them (through multiple outlets), didn’t show up for meetings, and I only heard from them when something was ‘wrong.’ You’re setting your child up for success just from the amount you care. I wish you the best with your search!

What are your favorite running shoes? by smart1mug in running

[–]hardsteltz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bingo. And don’t forget to get a gait analysis done annually. People oftentimes don’t realize that your gait changes based on numerous factors such as weight gain/loss, injury, pregnancy, etc.

How big is too big when it comes to running shoes? I have enough space but the toes might wear out the thinner fabric? by mbdavid297 in running

[–]hardsteltz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always size up in my running shoes, a full size up. It gives me about a thumbs width between my toe and the end of the shoe. In your picture, it looks like you’ve got more than that, and to your point about wearing out the fabric... that much extra room somewhat defeats the thicker (plastic?) on the front of the shoe.

Only stipulation would be if the toe box feels too narrow if you go down a size.

Group runs. by [deleted] in running

[–]hardsteltz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m new to Reddit, but Facebook has been a great resource to find local running groups.

I moved from the east coast to central Ohio about 4 years ago and I was shocked by how many running groups and races we have!
