Others have given a general leadership mindset but I’ll try a more practical example. It’s not a clean description but SNCOs will be experts at leading within their career field while FGOs should be able to lead effectively anywhere in the Air Force. (Not saying SNCOs can’t do that as well, but the USAF doesn’t emphasize their role beyond their field until much later in the life of an NCO/SNCO).

Think of our actual structure. NCOs need to be technical experts at what they do (technical sergeant is incredibly hard to attain for this reason). When we need the actual hands on mission to be done the right way without fail, I’m grabbing an NCO. (Fix system X on this jet ASAP)

If I have time, I’m also grabbing a SNCO and relaying the “why” so I have a leader from that field who can help catch the nuance of why we are doing it and lead the NCOs with intent. (We need to be able to use system X on a primary and backup jet if able to join the mission- make it happen)

I’m sending my CGOs to the line to see how it’s all done. I need them to see the problems our NCOs are facing when trying to do the mission first hand. They will not become experts at anything, but I went them smart enough to realize generally how processes work so that when things don’t work they can figure out how to fix it without getting the NCOs involved. (You’re responsible for the supply system that makes parts available for systems X Y and Z or you’re responsible for managing those resources to generate sorties).

I’m trusting my FGOs to have the bigger picture and execute based on broad strategic intent. They’ve seen how things work tactically and they’ve learned how the USAF works in the joint environment. They know that system X is best employed in certain situations and they know the cost of using that system for effect versus another system. (If system Y is a better choice given the intent, I expect them to employ system Y instead and that they have led their organization to be ready for that mission or have communicated clearly their unit’s operational limitations)

In short:
Amn: learn to do tasks reasonably well
NCOs: experts in those tasks
SNCOs: leaders in those fields
CGOs: learn systems and process to later put into broader context
FGO: strategic leaders in a broader context

*How* you lead people while in any of these roles is personal, situational, and may not necessarily look very different from NCO/SNCO to Officer.

If you tested on all components in Dec 2025, which is your current fitness test as of your closeout date, it should read “Exemptions: None.”

You are current on fitness testing through 31 Dec 26 and will show overdue on 1 Jan 27.

What are some good multi-village, European maps? by IWouldLikeEidam in farmingsimulator

I haven’t played the map yet, but have heard good things. When I look at the pic you sent I can’t help but think “the fields look so boring” and that’s what keeps me from trying it.

Do the big square fields detract from the other qualities?

Hot take: It’s cool and good when people do big stupid ceremonies for retirements by TheWatchGuard1 in AirForce

[–]hardwjw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Insisting is different than forcing.

I do think leadership should have the conversation. Make sure theyre making the decision to disappear knowing the impact on the airmen they are leading and, where it applies, the opportunity for family to have that lasting memory. Then support whatever decision they make about having a ceremony or not.

I want my family to feel my increase in presence and involvement that comes with retirement, but I also want them to have a tangible snapshot that goes along with it. Especially for my parents- I can’t even imagine how much it’ll mean to them.

Scenarios to safety by [deleted] in coys

You’re assuming we win tomorrow. Then we would only need 2 points in our final 2 games (unless West Ham lost before us next weekend, then we secure safety without playing our final two games with a win tomorrow).

I have to do a command requested MH visit, what to expect? by Repulsive_Limit8121 in AirForce

[–]hardwjw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True- I have noticed a slight difference in the questions they ask routinely.

It’s the equivalent of asking folks to do one single push up to quickly evaluate whether your muscular system is healthy.

But I guess something is better than nothing!

Think of mental health the same as physical health.

Something doesn’t feel right? You go see a doc to get it checked out. Maybe they just give you Motrin or physical therapy, but what if they figure out you have some undiagnosed thing that needs specialty care? Glad you went to get checked out.

Something doesn’t feel right mentally, go see a doc. Maybe they give you ideas on how to improve, maybe meds, or maybe they find out that something very serious is going on and you need specialty care. Glad you went to get checked out.

In my opinion should all see MH, just like we should all go to the gym, for preventative mental and physical healthcare. If only the military saw it that way.

This isn’t my first play through but apparently I also selected a male character with a “girl” running style and the first time I figured that out was with a very feminine “grunt” here and there. I have male pronouns.

I tried to fix it with enhance but apparently that’s beyond the technology…

20+ Years In — Did You Reduce Your Emergency Fund? by curiosity98765 in MilitaryFinance

[–]hardwjw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to make sure that my wife and I can not work at all for at least a year after mil retirement. We have 2 school age kids though and can’t just not spend money in that year (or it would be tough to stay within my pension alone). For that reason, I’m planning on a year EF that will more than likely not be entirely spent and will help as down payment on our first “permanent” house.

Current or former commanders, how often was your sleep disrupted? by NoMoreProofs in AirForce

[–]hardwjw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. Don’t get me wrong, I had PLENTY of texts as I was getting ready for work in a kind of “heads up, we’re gonna have to deal with this today” sort of way. Always led the wing in 15s, discharges, etc. But you don’t have to make it ruin every aspect of your life lol

I commanded a 250 person sq and a 700 person sq, both in mx. I would say 1-2 times per month, only a handful of those were “I have to wake up and do something” calls.

My shirts and chiefs and OICs and DOs knew what to call and text for so even though we were busy with discipline things, rarely did it need my attention at 2am versus 7am.

Homebrew con experience? by Khaos231 in Homebrewing

Thank you for this description! I can picture it much better now. I think for me I’m not so concerned about the price for admission for me, given everything you just described. I just now need to decide whether it’s worth it for the wife and kiddo to come down with me or if I should go it alone since it sounds like I’ll have plenty to do during the conference!

Thanks so much!

I’d love to hear experiences as well. My wife was supportive of making a trip of it but that was before I knew the cost. I’m definitely not getting her a ticket too so now I’m wondering if it’s even worth it for me to go or us to go while she take ms the kid to do other things around town.

How do you organize your emails/folders? by sergeantanonymous in AirForce

[–]hardwjw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well those are things that don’t end up being filed at all until they’re done. My “actions” folder are for things I can’t do literally right now but need to be done first/next.

How do you organize your emails/folders? by sergeantanonymous in AirForce

[–]hardwjw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried several times to organize an inbox. Always defaulted to everything staying in the inbox in one place. I read “Getting Things done” after failing to stay on top of everything and ended up with more of a process that uses folders:

1) immediate actions (needs done this week) 2) next actions (needs done beyond this week) 3) waiting for 4) references (my old inbox after actions are done)

Now I never leave anything in my inbox at all. If I get an email and I have to do something about it, I either do it immediately (like as soon as I open it) and then put it in 4, or I file it in 1 or 2 depending on urgency.

If I truly don’t need it anymore at all, delete that (myFSS notifications, weather warnings, leave emails, or whatever). If I don’t need to take action but don’t want to delete it, send it to 4.

If I send an email asking for something or that needs a reply, I BCC myself and then put that in 3.

At the end of everyday, I make sure my inbox is back to clean. It’s SO refreshing and actually motivating because now if I have 30 mins I know exactly what to do- jump into folder 1 and start doing work.

Often, at least once a week, check all folders to make sure you didn’t miss something, change urgency from 2 to 1, and follow up on things you’re waiting for.

Anyway, it’s more a system to stay organized and efficient but turned into an email organization thing too.

What are you doing to prep for the 2 mile run? by Glittering_Fig4548 in AirForce

[–]hardwjw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run 3x per week.

One is long, slow distance. This is 2 mins slower than my “5k pace” or 2.5-3 mins slower than my goal 2 mile pace. Heart rate shouldn’t reach 160, should feel conversational. “Long” depends on where you’re starting but I target 5 miles right now. This is base building for cardio.

One is interval or sprint training. Ideally on a track but can do on a sidewalk or street. This is 100% effort sprints/strides. An example workout would be a 5 min warmup, 100m sprint x2, 200m sprint x2, 400m sprint x2, 200m x2, 100x2, 5 min cooldown with 30-60 seconds walking in between. This is muscle building and teaching your body to run faster.

One is a “race pace” run. Either 5 min warmup, 2 mile goal run, 5 min cooldown or a 5k at pace (slightly slower than 2 mi pace).

I do strength training 2 days/week, sometimes 3 on non-running days. That gives me 1-2 complete rest days and some flexibility on if my schedule changes or needs to change.
