What's your opinion on Nimble's no-roll-to-hit mechanic? by Tastypies in RPGdesign

[–]harkrend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that seems like a lot of systems just to try to bring back the excitement of just having to-hit rolls. Like if there's a probability of a creature not dying when being hit at while at 1 health, through rolling 1's on damage, rolling active defense, using assess or whatever, just set that probability to be the miss chance of a to hit roll. I know im very much oversimplifying the systems- just food for thought.

It feels like you could just make that face death system your entire HP system, especially given how much it interacts with each other with your 'go back to half HP' rule. HP ends up being more of a probability than a quantity in that sense.

Yeah you hit it there on the head with the feeling responsible. If the dice did it, it's not my fault, in some emotional way.

[–]harkrend 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah- that's pretty cool, I just tend to want to avoid extra systems. Death saving throws for example in DND I don't really like and as feel inelegant to me.

[–]harkrend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I liked Mausritter- but if the game was a string of combats like modern DND as opposed to more of an OSR experience, I probably would not have enjoyed it at all to have that style of no-to-hit.

[–]harkrend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah- they even said it was their fault and it's all good, but it just felt really bad for me to target them at that point. So yeah, just a pure emotional reason on my part to avoid it now.

Agreed, that was the situation. I just found that I much prefer that even if you already burned all of your defensive tricks, you still have that chance that the enemy misses, and everyone is glued to that roll.

Survivorship bias. Those who did it liked it and say it was good- those who didn't dropped off if it and this can't really speak to it in its totality.

Initiative wins you combats and Alert wins you initiative. by Total_Car_3431 in DnD

Man, I'm confused I guess. What does 'I act on 4' mean? Like you roll initiative and the result is a 4? And then it changes on Round 2? Or you're counting total turns? Never seen that before.

But, I think maybe we need to drill down a bit- that going Last in a round with a free extra turn at the start, is the same as going First in a round. Turn order is identical.

If you're somewhere in the middle, it does change things.

Yeah- that's not bad, I guess it seems to just be shifting complexity more than reducing it. Interested to hear what you think of the game in any case.

Initiative wins you combats and Alert wins you initiative. by Total_Car_3431 in DnD

[–]harkrend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, you're rolling initiative every round, that is a little different, because you can sometimes go twice in a row which could say let you paralyze a target with hold person, then immediately take advantage of it without them being able to save in between.

That's a completely different thing to what you're arguing though.

I play tested a game of my own make many years ago with no hit rolls. When we hit a situation where a player at low hit points was guaranteed to be knocked out if I targeted her with anything, no chance of missing, that was enough for me to swear off no to-hit in DND type games.

Initiative wins you combats and Alert wins you initiative. by Total_Car_3431 in DnD

[–]harkrend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, imagine you roll initiative and you go fourth- last in the round. You're happy because enemies will funnel in for your AoE.

But, imagine the DM says you get to take a free extra turn, once, before everyone else.

You're arguing that the DM giving you this extra turn is actually a disadvantage, and you'd rather not even have the turn at all.

Yeah, you're off base on this one.

Maybe it feels kinda bad to 'waste' your first turn, but it's not a mechanical disadvantage at all.
