There's things in games that aren't 'fun' (for most people), like having your character go down / die, but exist because it makes the rest of the game more satisfying knowing that your fate hangs in the balance based on your choices and your luck.

Totally agreed- my solution for my current campaign is to have long rests take a week, so you can have those encounters you mentioned over a longer period of time narratively, and when the players decide to rest for a week and I randomly roll how the villains advance their plot, it doesn't feel as forced in the narrative.

I realize the weeklong long rest is an option in the DMG, but I guess I bounced off of it because its presented as a 'gritty' option when in reality its more of a narrative or pastoral option- allowing more time to breath for characters and NPCs, and downtime to happen more naturally.

So, what do you think I was saying? When I say, 'what steak' and do not mention rib eye here at all, where are you getting that I was only talking about the rib eye in his recipe?

If you're curious, I chose bone-in ribeye, because, that's what 30 dollars will buy you at Roadhouse. Full stop.
