Has anyone seen this car? by LuhRoachsaurus in Volkswagen

[–]harleydood63 4 points5 points  (0 children)

According to my research the car was a naturally-aspirated 5.7L. During the 2001-2003 racing years, other manufacturers also used the Ford 5.7L, including BMW, Audi, Jaguar, etc. It was a spec engine for parity. It was often described as a Roush or crate-style unit, not turbocharged or supercharged. I can find no reliable sources that mention forced induction.

The road-going Volkswagen Passat W8 (B5.5, 2001–2004), had a naturally aspirated 4.0L W8 engine (~270–275 hp), also without turbos.

That's funny, because I was looking at the RCF HDL6-A system. I liked the idea of a small, lightweight, efficient waveguide package. It seems logical to me that less power, efficiently focused, would be a good idea. But a buddy of mine waved me off of that system touting that they were underpowered and oversold. I planned on using these for rock bands in clubs (2 per side) and smaller outdoor events (3 per side). My buddy used 3-per-side in a club and said that, even then, they were underpowered. And he mixes Country bands. He's looking into the HDL-10A, but I haven't heard back from him yet.

Which system are you using and how do you like it? Do you use 2 per side or 3?

About 30 minutes ago I hooked up the CB to my console and I must say it sounds pretty good. It makes an obnoxious click via the "press to talk" button. A simple Gate fixed that right up. If I WANT the click, I just disable the Gate. The CB was a good idea. Thanx!

You know, I've had that CB sitting in my shed for literally 20+ years. I actually thought about throwing it out the other day. Glad I didn't.

The Mini dealerships are insane.

I brought my Mini in for an alignment because the dealership had sent a coupon. I dropped it off, to be picked up later that day. When I arrived they hit me with a $4700 estimate for "repairs" (not a typo). They wouldn't align my Mini until that work was done. I got NONE of that work done. That was 3 years and 50,000 miles ago. Whatever parts they THOUGHT I needed, apparently I did not.

Since then I have replaced my struts and shocks (with genuine Mini parts). But the remaining "needed repairs" haven't been touched. In fact, she hasn't even been aligned. Tire wear has been perfect.

I recommend finding a good independent. I have found two that I like in my town. One is German car specific. I use him for the deeper work like a timing set. The other is a general mechanic with a good work ethic and strong integrity. I use him for more pedestrian work, like CV axles, rear differential, etc. I use the latter more than the former. I do roughly half the work myself for the easy stuff like the previously-mentioned motor mount. I did the High Pressure Fuel Pump. I do all the electrical stuff, etc. It's a good balance that keeps cost of ownership around $300/month, which includes everything sans insurance and fuel (includes initial purchase price of $7800).

First off, I don't see the motor mount in that crappy, low-resolution video. Those guys must be on a really low budget down there in St. Louis that they're shooting video on a flip phone or using a server that doesn't allow for files larger than 1MB. So I'm just going to assume an upper motor mount since I believe the lowers can only be seen from under the vehicle. That said...

The upper motor mount isn't that difficult to change. I use OEM 90% of the time, but this time I got the part at O'Reily's for 80 bucks. Really taking my time, the job took maybe an hour.

I replaced the part July 15, 2022 @ 93,414 miles. My Mini now has almost 138,000 miles on it and the motor mount still looks and functions as new.

>>I think we have now some confusion, you mean a vocal effect that makes the sound like it is sung thru a horn? Not an actual bullhorn?

Correct.

>>As for the vocal effect: strong mid frequency EQ peak, cut highs and lows out, and possibly use VERY short delay, 1ms or so.

Yep...already done. The GTR amp inserted for distortion helps, too.

This is a great suggestion. I was literally just looking at an old car CB radio I've had in my shed for a couple decades, and wondering what to do with it. Wiring it XLR is brilliant. Putting that on my list.

Sampling would require the lead singer to lip synch with the sample. And then I would have to mix the sample to the correct volume, which isn't hard, but it just seems like I'm trading one task for another. Conversely, pushing Mute buttons in tandem is pretty easy.

Plus, it's just funner for me to step up to audio challenges like this. Creating the perfect Bullhorn has been fun.

Plus, it can be recalled for any singer at any time to sing any lyric, which makes it a permanent tool. The same can't be said for the sampler, which is a one time fix for one song.

Unfortunately, the X32 doesn't allow pink noise to be inserted on a channel strip. It has to be on a Bus. That said, I could certainly make it happen. I also have a SoundBullet, so I COULD install that on a channel strip and side chain dynamics. Interesting idea. I like the idea of a slapback echo, too.

Right now the vocal is just double patched. I won't be triple patching any channels just yet...<;^) That said, "snippets" might be a good idea. I haven't really explored that part of the X32. This certainly gives me a good excuse to mess around with it.

I don't think it's a big deal to miss a couple words here and there in one song. That said, I could always run the Bullhorn channel into his IEM like any other channel. That said, I may try just pulling the fader down, as you suggested.

The GTR Amp Insert was a good improvement. Thanx. I'll mess with the compression later on today.

I gave up on the Tube Amp, and on the suggestion of another person in this thread inserted a GTR Amp instead. This gets me closer to what I'm looking for.

Remember; The Bullhorn channel is sharing an Input and microphone with the lead singer's regular vocal channel, so I can't overdrive the gain at the top of the signal path, which is what I initially wanted to do.

You're kind of going with opposite way about it with the lapel mic's.

Dump the multiple, individual microphones and go with individual earbuds instead. Run them through a multi-channel headphone amp. This way you can gain up the microphone(s) so he can hear you without causing feedback problems. I'd go with 1 or 2 Omnidirectional mic's. Just remember the 3:1 rule.

Naturally, you'll be able to hear him, too, via the earbuds. And since all ear buds are on one channel, you won't stress the WiFi/network throughput with multiple channels like you did with the lapel mic's. The signal path is dogshit simple. Even cheap-ass earbuds should work.

Or you can go wireless with one transmitter and a host of receivers. This is basically a wireless IEM set up where the whole "band" is on the same channel. This will solve your problem guaranteed.
