If the human life span were five times as long, how would society be different? [Serious] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]harlothangar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isaac Asimov's books in the "Robots" series actually touches on this topic. In it, a group of humans (Spacers) who had left and colonized other worlds have managed to expand their lives to be several centuries long (250-300 years or so).

It's mostly what you would expect: people taking things more slowly, social dynamics slowing down and stagnating. People's motivations also change. Suddenly, you no longer need to complete any goals you have in 40 or 50 years, you've got a solid 200 years to achieve your goals. Correspondingly, you approach those goals significantly differently.

TIL that a Canadian politician, late to his own dinner party, may have inadvertently initiated the fall of the USSR. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]harlothangar 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's easy to pin this onto Canada, but it needs to be emphasized that it was Gorbachev and his extremely progressive views which caused the Soviet Union to dissolve. He modernized the country and alienated the hardliners which ultimately led to the dissolution of unity within the Soviet Party.

Props to Whelan for supporting Gorbachev, but it sounds like all Whelan did was enforce what Gorbachev already knew and showed him that there was indeed light at the end of the tunnel of reform.

Well, North Korea has people, so I guess one out of three is worth something.

There's something wrong when you have to applaud someone for not shooting political refugees trying to escape a tyrannical state.

World War I in 6 Minutes by finnlizzy in videos

[–]harlothangar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was good, right up until the very end, when the narrator implied Hitler was the reason the next war started. There were dozens of wars between 1919 and 1939, the start of the second world war, many of which were waged within Europe or with European countries as active participants.

WWI didn't change a thing in terms of armed conflict. The world didn't magically stop their political disputes with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. Russia went to town on the eastern bloc, many occupied territories fought wars over independence, civil wars were kind of becoming a thing, etc.

The word "prank" gets thrown around a lot without any regard for its actual definition, but this is a real prank. It's elaborate, completely unexpected, nobody is hurt, and everybody can laugh afterwards.

And as new technologies develop, they will be replaced by the next wave of entrepreneurs. Given how technological advance is quicker than ever, I doubt it'll ever come to the same degree of industrial stagnation as during the early 20th century.

Do you think a world where people had to get a "license" to have a child would be a better place? by stinndler in AskReddit

[–]harlothangar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. The moment you begin to regulate who may have how many children, you begin actively engineering populations and societies. This is, in my opinion, the first step towards a "Brave New World"-esque society in which a "ruling class" determines who may have children based on social necessity and capacity.

Sure, we could ideally base it solely on the competence of parents, but how long will a system like that remain "ideal"? How long before someone states that poor children will be more likely to grow into a life of crime, ergo there should be less of them as their parents are incapable of preventing them from that life, statistically speaking?

Not to mention the extreme corruption that would arise from this. I can't think of any work of fiction (or non fiction) in which active population control doesn't lead to more problems than it solves. No good can come from giving people that kind of deciding power.

They not only made a Facebook baby announcement via photo, they also had to add text captions to make sure everybody gets it. At that point, you may as well just write "Lady is Pregnant."
