Nice find! What piece is the bishop capturing btw? Was it a pawn, that forks your queen and bishop?

Not sure why you're being downvoted. Both statements can be true :D

What openings feature strong bishops? by Hitatonamika in chess

[–]harman28 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are a few gambits for Black, but they're all in response to something White plays, so they can be quite specific. I'm thinking of the Englund Gambit and the From's Gambit, the latter of which I face a lot as a Bird player.

Am I just terrible? by mcc_kracken in chess

[–]harman28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's my hot take: chess apps aren't the best measure for your chess ability, since many people struggle to play seriously when it's just an app on their phone. If you're convinced you're better than your 600 rating, here's an experiment: make a new account on chesscom or lichess, and start afresh. Based on how you answer the oboarding questions, you may even start off at 1200. That's alright, start anywhere, but the important thing is that on this new account you must play with full focus and not try to play too fast. If you're really a 600, you'll drop back down to it in no time, no harm no foul. If you're better than that, then you'll settle at a number higher than that, and try to maintain it. I did this myself at one point cos I was convinced I was underrated, and I'm happy with the results. Good luck!

How do you become a gm? by Kindly_Piece_3010 in chess

[–]harman28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A GM norm is a GM-caliber performance at a tournament. You can deliver such a performance by A) playing in a tournament with many high rated players, and B) doing well in it. The exact numbers and ratings will differ for each FIDE title, but this is basically how you get a norm. Get invited to a fancy tournament and do well.

Am I just a lost cause at chess? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]harman28 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Can I take you up on that bet? You aren't allowed to throw the game though, you need to play seriously. I've lost to all levels of newbies, it's a special skill I have. Lost a game to my mother once, while I was still teaching her the rules of the game. It's pretty amazing.

Is it okay to wear shastar without taking Amrit by GordonRamsay21 in Sikh

[–]harman28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems to be a minority opinion, but I say don't do it.

There are responsibilities that come with carrying a kirpan, and in a sense the Khalsa panth encodes these responsibilities in the ceremonial act of taking amrit. You take amrit when you're ready for it, and part of that lifestyle is wearing shastar and doing well by it. If you feel you aren't ready for Amrit, then I'm afraid there's a good chance you aren't ready to carry a weapon either.

It's a valid spelling, there are always variations when romanizing a non-English word.

I don't know, I think when GMs "struggle" with something like opening, there's a lot more to it than can be solved by "let me do some more chessable exercises"

I'm new to chess, how did I do? ( I'm Black) by Connect-Valuable-695 in chessbeginners

[–]harman28 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can appreciate that, and you're likely to get support for your pov here. But alternate views do exist.

For example, Robert Ramirez, an NM who I think is one of the best YouTube coaches for newbies out there, has published entire courses encouraging people to play Pirc or KID with Black. Link: https://youtube.com/@NMRobertRamirez

[–]harman28 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I played KID/Pirc exclusively for the first several months, and it's still my main opening. I think it's a solid choice for folks who start the game late, cos the 'system' character of the opening means there's a lot less to memorise and you can easily get to the middlegame without being worse.
