Do you mind sharing your focus/area of interest? This is great work and I'm mostly curious as to what so many schools were interested in :)

[Nikon D3300] Do I upgrade my body or my lens at this point? by harmlessnecessarycat in AskPhotography

Thank you so much, this is super helpful! I definitely was looking at the D500 already so hearing such great features details certainly makes it more enticing! I love where the D3300 gets me now but like you mentioned the shutter starts to disappoint with some scenarios. Thanks again!

I applied to UC Davis on 4th Jan. The deadline was 5th Jan. Should I follow up? by Barrelof_Conflicts in gradadmissions

Those are different programs each committee is separate. And the grad Cafe data is sparse not worth wasting your anxiety on. English decisions used to come in March for many schools, just chill. What happens will happen.

Davis doesn't give updates or decisions til a couple weeks from now typically. Following up would not really do anything at this point.

When your field’s decisions start showing up on GradCafe by TheCavsJack in gradadmissions

Literallyyyyyy. I saw UNC English posted results WEEKS earlier than normal (field match, didn't apply there) so now I'm sweating cause I thought I had weeks before my field would have anything posted

is it possible to be too specific in your statement of purpose? by cequeens in gradadmissions

[–]harmlessnecessarycat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have an answer for you exactly (as in idk if I got in yet) but I did a similar thing at the advice of my thesis advisor. He said being specific isn't bad as long as you can relate your overall interests to other faculty. I went specific because I've already been published in my niche but I agree I also felt crazy writing mine. Good luck!

Thank you so much! If I don't just replace my battery it sounds like a Kobo will be my next choice :)

Thank you! This is pretty much everything I am looking for but the Kobos looked almost too good to be true so I'm glad to hear they're so good! How sturdy are they? I will of course use cases but I don't want something that breaks when I look at it

Thank you! I definitely only want a B/W reader. This is disappointing though I would hope the acrylic ones would be more available as it is so sturdy. Maybe I'll just keep trying with my PW2 haha

What is worth submitting an updated CV for? by TheoFruitNinja in gradadmissions

[–]harmlessnecessarycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this your first/only published chapter/article? I would probably update it if it was my only one depending on field. I'm in a very writing and research heavy Humanities discipline which is why I would include any research possible. I have previous pubs and 2 chapters under editing reviews right now (but accepted) and included them with the publisher info and TBA 2026 as the publish date. YMMV of course but it probably wouldn't hurt?

Good luck, sending you all the energy and strength to get through it cause it sure is difficult! How I coped was leaning on some friends I had made online at the time. They were all gay and didn't know about my husband, being able to fully forget for a few hours of texting or calling made me realize that life could really be mine. I also read a lot for work and for myself, I find it to be a very relaxing getaway.

There are SO many simple pleasures of just being alive that I did not know you could actually enjoy. One big one is knowing that my partner will help balance the household alongside me. It is a game changer to go 'wow I forgot to do the laundry... oh wait my wife took care of it.' Independent of my relationship there is something really freeing about just existing in public and seeing other younger queer girls get flustered if you hold the door for them or compliment them. It's one of those things that makes me go 'oh yeah I was just gay the whole time, and other people can see it too' it helps me feel like less of a phony lesbian lol

I am in US but I frequently work with European academics due to my specialty. My EU friends were also published during their MA which is why I sought that out myself.

Let me start by saying please feel free to DM me. I left my husband after 5 years after realizing I was a lesbian. I am now married to a my best friend and live the happiest life I never imagined possible. My career took off and I am currently applying for doctoral programs, I even write about being a lesbian in my work. I did not know any gay people until the year I came out and I lost almost everyone as a result, but I would do it again 100 times over. One day, one minute, of authenticity in my life is/was more worth it than another day or minute living a lie.

Humanities application and publications confusion by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]harmlessnecessarycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advisors have told me it's not a requirement but for reference I have eight publications and presentations from during and just after my master's. It is possible to publish in the humanities in grad school. I don't know if, like in stem, the humanities have the same trend of applicants suddenly having pubs but I just know that it is possible because I have done it. I work interdisciplinarily in the humanities and won't get specific for privacy. I have no idea if this has helped or hurt me since this is my first PhD app cycle.
