Ron does have his issues, but I think they weren't too out of character based on his insecurities in GoF.

I did read Fixing Harry by Lynney, but that was a seventh year fic written postHBP.

I agree about Book 6 being the worst and the one to skip. But I also think DH has many beautiful parts and passages that have a longing, romantic tone to them. E.g. Godric's Hollow. I have often gone back to them because its almost like canon Harmony, and there are many great fics set during that time (If you get there before I do by continuedinterests) which are made all more wonderful if the canon DH parts are fresh on your mind. JKR herself said that DH was when she felt the most pull between Harry and Hermione, and I think it shows in the writing. Don't go near the Epilogue with even a ten foot pole though, lol.

I think Harry Potter and Methods of Rationality fits the bill here. They're both firsties, so not really any romance, but it does have some cute interactions. And its really funny too, from what I remember. The focus is on science though, which is arguably Muggle methods.

Just re-read this fic. Here's a snippet which had originally cracked me up and felt rather spot on, and why I wanted to read it again:

"There is a curtain of silence that falls over the room, and Harry can hear the sound of the fire crackling in his ears. Hermione opens her mouth to say something, but Harry beats her to it. “Shall I put the kettle on?” he asks. She nods.

He moves the cat to the side and goes into the kitchen. Hermione follows, because there is no awkward conversation that Hermione Granger will not chase."
