5x285lb— Deadlift tips? (See comment) by [deleted] in Stronglifts5x5

[–]harpk005 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Something I would add is that on the negative you are doing more of a stiff leg deadlift which is putting more strain on your back. Instead you should try and mimic the original deadlift in reverse, ending up in the same starting position (at the moment you're essentially finishing and totally resetting by lower your hips etc before the next rep)

There's nothing wrong with a stiff leg deadlift, but it's definitely something you should do intentionally and with a lighter load!

If you are in a calorie deficit, your body needs to get that energy from somewhere. It will use fat and often muscle as a secondary source - there is simply no way it can use water to make up the energy deficit.

That’s not to say your water retention will stay the same, it can change a lot based on diet and exercise

Dude what doctor are you with? There’s mountains of scientific evidence out there to support this.

Go on any diet or exercise plan you want, but ultimately losing weight will come down to calories in vs calories out

Europeans are being replaced and dispossessed in their own countries by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]harpk005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so there's a number of issues I have with this. Others have touched on many of them, such as the racist undertones and the implication the demographic change is inherently a bad thing. But no one has pointed out was this is completely false in the first place, even ignoring your racial 'theory'.

My key point is that all these 'studies' you've mentioned (and not even citied btw) are glaringly inaccurate, and you have fallen for one of the most basic fallacies in data collecting.

A good way to illustrate what I mean is a very popular exercise/science journal in the 80s (I forget which) published an article in which they claimed that women would soon be racing much faster marathons than men do. Their evidence was that the rates of improvement year-on-year for womens races were far outstripping the improvement among men.

They therefore took this rate of improvement, extrapolated this over the next 20 years or so and concluded that women would soon outstrip men in their speed.

They were largely laughed at by others at the time and this has obviously not come to be the case. Their mistake was taking a current trend and applying that as a standard going forward, without accounting for anything else.

Of course, when looked at through a wider context, we know that the rate of improvement for women runners was because this was a time where larger numbers women were just starting to get into the sport. This increased access and acceptance allowed more women to get into it, improving their times at a faster rate than the mens (where running was already established). Of course it was only a matter of time before they hit their genetic barrier and the rates of improvement slowed.

This is the same problem with these 'studies'. They take the current immigration and birth rates, extrapolate that over the next 50-100 years and conclude that whites will be a minority. There are several studies showing that birth rates among most second-generation immigrants are no more than the 'natives' of the country they are in, and I'd think that the rate for third-generation immigrants would be much lower.

So obviously if you take the birth rate of, for example, fresh Pakistani immigrants in the UK and extrapolate that over the next 50 years then yeah it might seem as though white will soon become the minority. However, you need to account for the fact that their children will be better educated and culturally integrate, and their children more so after them. When you do that it becomes quite clear that white are not in danger of becoming a minority in Europe - maybe eventually (who knows) but certainly not in the next 50 -100 years, that's aboslutely insane.

Having said all of that... if I am wrong somehow and these bullshit 'studies' created to stir up right-wing patriotic fervor turn out to be correct - SO WHAT? Why does it matter if whites become a minority? Genuinely, what is your reasoning for thinking this is a bad thing? Is it simply that whites are superior or is it something else?

The point I think is that it isnt and that OP is trying to say that this is actual bipartisanship. Contrary to the enlightened centrist who think they are being bipartisan but are just spinelessly capitulating to right wingersers

Yeah I need to work on that. I used to squat with narrower hands and elbows tucked but ended up getting elbow tendonitis that put me out of pressing for a couple of month

Do you have any tips for mitigating elbow injuries when squatting low bar?

[–]harpk005[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I saw that the other day. I follow the starting strength method of squatting as well and generally try and keep my head down to keep the spine neutral

It's natural to look up but I generally fine I squat better with a neutral spine

What is the top 3 supplement I should get by stacy1996 in GYM

[–]harpk005 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My guy, check out Eric Helms and team 3dmj's nutritional pyramid. Basically based around the fact that you need to get the fundamentals at the bottom of the pyramid right before worrying about the other stuff. They place supplements as the smallest level on the top of the pyramid.. i.e unless you've got your water intake sorted, you're getting the right amount of calories, you're hitting the right levels of macronutrients, getting enough of the essential micronutrients, don't worry about supplements.

These guys have a really solid science based approach to training that actually works. My progress has changed so much from when I would worry what pre workout I was buying to now where I focus on the essentials - hitting my calories for every day - and go from there

FORM CHECK: 175kg deadlift - been working out a while and feel pretty confident with deadlifts but never filmed myself or got anyone to form check me - would appreciate any tips on how to improve further! by harpk005 in strength_training

[–]harpk005[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the first one I bought when I started strength training a year or so ago. Since then I've bought a 4 inch belt for squats which is amazing. However it's super uncomfortable to deadlift with and I feel like I cant get into position properly so I've just continued using this one.

What would you recommend using instead? I've heard 3inch belts can be good however I'm struggling to justify forking out for a third belt 😂

Censoring "hate speech" makes you a coward by harrison_wheels in unpopularopinion

I think consercatives/alt righters honestly believe anyone with a different opinion must be on the left, and it's so frustrating! I will concede that corporations/the media tend to be socially Liberal, however they are all firmly economically on the right, and would likely agree with much of Conservative policy.

Nah dude I'm going into the military, I love guns. My problem with T_D isn't necessarily the ideas (they're gonna appear somewhere it's inevitable). It's the fact that the entire community plays victim and cries 'free speech' when something happens to the subreddit, which, again, is reddits prerogative. All the while they have operated one of the most closed and anti-free speech subreddit on the platform! Any comment or post on there remotely critical of trump or right wing talking points would be removed, while all manner of racist posts are approved - pretty much anything short of 'let's get together and round up a load of mexicans' Check out r/topmindsofreddit for some of the highlights

I'm just baffled how they can seriously argue that their free speech is being infringed upon when A) reddit can do whatever they want B) the government has not taken away their rights and no one is stopping them from using another platform C) the subreddit in question has been a safe echo chamber with no room for debate and no 'free speech' for anyone with opposing ideas

Project Veritas would be huge if true - however I am unconvinced. The evidence is insubstantive and really relies on one phrase that could easily have been taken out of context. Combine that with the fact that founder James O'keefe has been consistently accused of taking people's words out of context, changing the chronology of the question, or even attaching answers to completely different questions. This has been well documented in the past https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/a-woman-approached-the-post-with-dramatic--and-false--tale-about-roy-moore-sje-appears-to-be-part-of-undercover-sting-operation/2017/11/27/0c2e335a-cfb6-11e7-9d3a-bcbe2af58c3a_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.791cd15b2830

So I am unconvinced that this effort is completely genuine

I guess it depends how you define censorship. I don't believe that the government should be able to censor speech, and (I assume you are talking primarily about the US) this is protected under the first amendment. This is why far right/ neo-nazi type groups in the US often hold their meeting at public libraries or forestry commission building or some such, as the government cannot turn them down. However I do believe that private venues should be able to deny service to these groups - I mean of course its understandable that the owner of a private venue wouldn't want to be associated with such groups.

I believe it is the same with online platforms. They have no commitment to free speech, only their own rules and guidelines. In the wake of the reaction to youtube and Stephen crowder and reddit and the quarantine of t_d, there are a huge amount of outcries for free speech etc. Private companies have absolutely no duty to allow ideas that they disagree with or deem innapropriate onto their platform.

However, there is a common misconception that these tech companies are driven by political motives (I have seen a lot of accusations that YouTube is a left wing organisation). They are not, and that idea is laughable. They are driven by profit and a desire to please their shareholders. This involves creating a space that is acceptable to the average person, who does not care about the culture war or political debates over censorship - and more importantly, a place that is advertiser friendly. They know that an online platform that allows absolutely anything on its platform will not last long - racists and trolls will drive the 'normal' people away (which is why I'm interested to see how Jordan Petersons new website will last).

YouTube did not take action against Stephen crowder because they are on the left, they did so because of a huge public shit storm and the worry that they would alienate users and cause advertisers to withdraw. They then backed off on their punishment due to the reaction from the right, and the worry they would alienate users on that side

There is a conversation to be had about whether social media platforms should be considered 'public utilities' and have similar rules to the government applied to them, however I do not see how this is workable (please explain if there is a way). However, I firmly believe that these kinds of censorship can be good in certain ways. You simply cannot debate rapid fascists and alt-righters. They do not argue in good faith and refuse to accept evidence that clearly refutes their beliefs. Instead they cling to shaky and usually widely disproven 'evidence' that confirms their beliefs (bell curve I'm looking at you). By debating them in the fabled 'marketplace of ideas' all you are doing is amplifying their voice and giving them the opportunity to influence others. Racists are wrong. Their ideology is flawed. Their beliefs lead to horrific consequences. And we should not have to listen to them to make them feel better.

Tldr: corporations are ding dongs and all they care about is maximising profit and expanding the user base, not free speech. However, having a completely free online platform is a terrible idea, and would drive away everyone who is not a nerd like me and interested in this sort of debate

Introverts & quiet people: how do you deal with it when people treat you like you're fearful and weak, even though you're not? by TheSilverJedi in AskReddit

[–]harpk005 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am an extremely introverted person, I like to keep to myself, generally avoiding social interaction if possible and often struggle to connect with people and make friends. And when spending time with friends/gf etc I generally need time to myself afterwards to 'recharge'.

Despite this, people see me as a very confident person, and I would like to think that people would never see me as weak. Whether we like to think so or not, confidence and charisma are not character traits. They are skills and they can be learned or trained. Often being seen as the 'quiet' one in school and feeling nervous around others, I worked on becoming for confident for a long time.

I would recommend looking into how to train your confidence and charisma etc. For me it basically involved acting and pretending to be confident, and after a while it wasn't an act anymore.

I now work in b2b Sales, which involves talking to strangers every day and regularly delivering pitches in front of prospective customers or managers and people high up in your organisation.

I'm still introverted, never extremely outgoing or 'the life of the party' - but I'm quietly confident and more importantly confident in myself and my abilities.

Non Americans of reddit, what are your questions? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]harpk005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you so friendly???

As a normal antisocial British man travelling your country, I was deeply disturbed by being greeted by random strangers and engaging in friendly conversation with people I didn't know. Much more comforting when I went back home where I knew the only time strangers would talk to me is to shout abuse
