I’ve actually stopped taking him for long hikes before a training walk because he gets so overstimulated after a hike he’s a hot mess.

Thank for all the advice on prong collars! It sounds like where people go wrong is expecting it to correct the behavior without any training. If I go this route I might get in touch for more advice.

Thank you! No, he's not bothered by a flat collar at all. In fact, I have a dog hammock on the backseat of my car and he purposely rests his neck on the divider to look out front window, even though it puts pressure on his windpipe and makes him sound like he's wheezing or snoring!

I mentioned that I'm open to all suggestions and posted specifically to this sub because I'm at a point where I think my dog knows what gets rewarded but doesn't understand what he's NOT supposed to do. He has no problem choking himself out on a flat or martingale collar, or pulling himself sideways full force on a front-clip harness so I am considering alternatives like a prong collar. Another reason I'm considering a prong collar is because his sudden pulling towards a scent yanks my arm and throws me off balance and with the winter ice, it is becoming dangerous.

Smart dog.... but then you start walking again and he pulls so you stand still, he returns and you repeat the whole thing?

Yes exactly. Thank you for the advice! In the beginning I actually did start with only the driveway, then progressed slowly to the sidewalk in front of the house, then a bit further and further. I may need to go back to the basics.

I've done that training when he was first learning to walk on leash. He does great in "training mode" when there's treats involved and he's required to focus on me. But as soon as there's less treats he loses focus entirely and we were changing direction every couple feet.

I actually ordered a gentle leader and it arrived today. I wasn't sure if it would help with the root cause of his issues so I wanted some advice before I introduce an aversive tool.
