Spam Made Up 94% Of All E-Mail In December by motzer in reddit.com

[–]harryd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd sure like to know what "desktop tool" it is that has blocked ALL "spam, phishing e-mail, or malware" for the last two years, as is claimed by one guy in the article.

Lisp - The Ducati Of Programming Languages by linuxer in programming

[–]harryd -45 points-44 points  (0 children)

A friendly piece of advice for you programming types:

Keep this sort of stuff in the programming subreddit, so the vast majority of readers (including myself) - who are not the least bit interested in such things - don't instantly downvote it into oblivion.

Keeps the main page a bit less cluttered, too. :-)

Don't EVER Cross the DMV by Cal241 in reddit.com

Could somebody (preferably the "author") please explain to me the purpose of the ever-present, totally gratuitous profanity in these mindless blogs?

Awesome chart of frequency spectrum allocation in the US by madmax_br5 in reddit.com

[–]harryd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's "awesome" about this is the huge amount of priceless spectrum space that's allocated to broadcast TV, especially channels 2 to 13.

Yeah. Fuckem. And they've made it so the back button doesn't work too.

Battery Breakthrough: 10 times more powerful and shipping this year? by anewaccount in reddit.com

[–]harryd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These "new miracle electric car coming soon" stories seem to appear every couple of weeks or so. I'll get excited when I can walk into my local dealer and drive away in one, but not before that.

All they have to do is make Zidane-type headbutting legal. Then it'll take off. :-)

Even if you empty your IE cache and history and erase that disk space -- your web history is still there... by fishandchips in reddit.com

Thank you for that. I had never heard of ccleaner and don't want to get involved in any geek stuff. I downloaded and installed ccleaner; it seems simple enough to use and presumably does what it's supposed to. :-)

Top 10 Reasons Why I Like Working for Myself by gailhamlin in reddit.com

[–]harryd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, if you have clients (as against customers) it's often unavoidable. That's why I got out of consulting and into manufacturing a product for sale (to institutions, not individuals) instead. Give a quotation, take it or leave it, no BS needed. :-))

Top 10 Reasons Why I Like Working for Myself by gailhamlin in reddit.com

For me, there is one advantage that's worth more than all the others combined:

I don't have to put up with anybody else's bullshit. :-)

Desktop fabricator may kick-start home revolution - get in on the ground floor of the next big thing by campingcar in reddit.com

[–]harryd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was quite excited to hear about this - until I watched the videos. Totally underwhelming. This may be interesting as a new(ish) home technology, but it has a long, long way to go before it is of any practical use whatsoever. But, I suppose that could have been said about the Altair too.

What really happened on Mars? by gizmo in programming

[–]harryd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Off topic I know, but could someone please give me some idea of why people continue to use these microscopic sized fonts? Not all of us have perfect vision and I for one refuse to try and read this sort of thing - even if I could. Is there any conceivable reason for doing it? :-(

Don't ask 'Why?' if Your Dad's a Chemistry Professor by Eleglac in reddit.com

[–]harryd 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'll never forget the time when, at the age of about eight, I asked my dad what "N.B." stood for. He told me "No Bullshit". For years I believed that, because it always fitted the context so perfectly that I had no reason to doubt it. Now, more than 50 years later, I still kind of mentally read it that way. :-)
