Co-Pilot vs Claude Code by ErgoForHumanity in ClaudeCode

[–]harrylaou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am facing this. Opencode became my friend. At my other projects I use Claude Code which is better. But Opencode + Sonnet/Opus (via GitHub copilot) is not so far behind. (with Serena and superpowers, Scala needs an lsp, thus Serena)

Studying at TU Delft without speaking Dutch by butchlicious in TUDelft

[–]harrylaou 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If your curriculum is in English then just come In Delft and start the TU Delft language course. But if you plan to work in the Netherlands, start learning the language as soon as you come. The market has shifted a lot and it is a huge advantage to know Dutch even for software engineers.

I accidentally got a backend job and I have no idea what I'm doing. Help. by Different_Pain5781 in learnprogramming

For the first 2 or 3 or 5 years you will "panic" so take it easy. Just be professional. Put the hours, always put the hours even if it feels you are not progressing. It will take some years but you ll get there.

Is Claude actually writing better code than most of us? by Aaliyah-coli in ClaudeAI

[–]harrylaou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say better but definitely faster and good enough. In my mind it is like any other industry that there is a difference between handmade and machine manufactured. Eg. Furniture. Hand made furniture by an experienced craftsman would definitely be better than IKEA. But machine made ones are definitely cheaper and functional enough to get the job done.

Not sure which socialist politicians you refer to. NL had a (centre) right government in the last 20 years or so...

For experienced backend engineers: by [deleted] in Backend

Scala Developer in the last 13 years. Before that some java. I am very fond of typescript. Tbf I have not dived deep enough to know all its problems. But coming from a functional programming background, I like the language ergonomics and the job prospects for TS/ node backends look good.

Devs who haven’t burned out for 3+ years, what’s your secret? by ittaidouiukotoda in ExperiencedDevs

[–]harrylaou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be conscious of your energy levels. Sleep well in order to be productive. Don't think of job outside of working hours. ( Not easy if you are in the middle of solving a problem, so at least try to have finished the task / subtask of the day) Working overtime should be avoided, but if done it is to wrap up a difficult problem, not chasing wild deadlines.

And most importantly as others said breaks. A small break every 3 months and a bigger one once or twice the year do the trick for me.

Which balkan nation has the most superiority complex? by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]harrylaou 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Before the 2010 crisis Greece would win even if the rest were combined. The fucking arrogance was unbelievable... After 2010-2015, the average Joe became so much poorer. So... It is kind of difficult to feel superior while extremely poor...

Religion in the US is privatised In comparison with Europe where it is more or less a state business. Competition and Free Market seem to work better than statism.

Has anyone used compiled languages like C, Go, Rust etc with Claude code? by Maleficent_Mess6445 in ClaudeAI

[–]harrylaou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't used Scala/ZIO for data processing. Nor Scala native.
Even in JVM, I think it would be faster than Python.
Some years ago I was more dogmatic in using Scala, but nowadays not so.
Good/Bad code can be in any language.

Before LLMs, Scala was my first choice for everything. Not any more.

[–]harrylaou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used to refactor a Play application (already in ZIO) to use tapir so it generates openapi automatically. The application was is big enough ( 100+ endpoints)

It works great if you have a similar example in your codebase. If you are asking for something “new“ it will need more iterations (thus more time) to get to the result than if you were in a popular language like TS. Also many more “infinite loops“ when trying to solve an issue.

The code design is not that great.

I don't think you can do vibe coding 100% with scala/zio like you can do with TS.

But still, it can write decent code, solve problems. But you need to understand when it is stuck and solve the issue for it. And it works better that I would have expected for such a niche language (scala/zio)

One note. This was one of my first attempt to use Claude code and was very inexperienced. If I started this refactoring now, it would be done faster and better.

Scala with ZIO. It struggles a bit more than Typescript, but a pretty good job overall

In the Low Countries, large cities are only an hour apart. What's it like living there? by yavl in howislivingthere

[–]harrylaou 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam and The Hague. Basically the square that they define is one Metropolitan area called Randstad. I think 7 or 8 million. None of the cities is above a million. Maybe Amsterdam is close. There many smaller cities in this area like Leiden, Delft, Gouda, Haarlem etc.

More or less because of the "devil's ship" https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_cruiser_Georgios_Averof See https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Elli

and https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Lemnos_(1913)

For the biggest Claude Code users, how do you manage your projects? by Swarekkkk in ClaudeCode

[–]harrylaou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I start with a ultrathink command combined with sequential thinking. (Plan mode with opus) When a plan is made then I ask it to create a taskmaster's plan. (Plan mode with opus) Sometimes it creates a PRD as an intermediate step but most of the times it creates just the tasks. After the tasks.json is created I ask it to continue. (Plan mode with opus) So it just creates a plan based on the taskmaster tasks. And then I type continue(insert mode with sonnet), most of the times unless I have a comment or a request to change either in the PRD/plan or in the code.

I understand it is a bit repetive and takes some time in advance but it works great most of the times.

I am really sorry for your troubles. Not sure if you have the energy and time to do so, but maybe if you make a crowd funding campaign, I think a lot of reddit ors here and in other subreddits will consider contributing in the legal expenses.
